I've been sharing this book with many people who have reported breakthroughs in their willingness to develop "intimacy with fear," and practice giving and receiving compassion. Chodron calls us to cultivate maitri(lovingkindness) beginning with unconditional friendship toward ourselves. Though Pema Chodron stand sin the Tibetan stream, much of her direct simplicity resembles Zen. Though somewhat Stoic, manyof my student readers experienced great comfort and courage from reading it.

This was my second time reading When Things Fall Apart.....the book should be titled Perfect Advice for Everyday Living. There will always be times of suffering and Pema certainly guides us to truth. Love too. I will keep this one near me as I do Tolle's books.

Pema has a way with words and Buddhist concepts that gets straight to the matter. Both this and the other recent read of Pema's were pretty good, although I prefer her older material and listening to her cds (Practicing Peace in Times of War, Don't Bite the Hook).

Interesting so far. If you aren't familiar with Buddhist philosophy/cosmology, it might be dense.
