I thought it was a beautiful account of a difficult relationship between Annie Ernaux and her mother. It took her a year to write this book which she says is not really a biography of her mother, and certainly isn't a novel. Annie Ernaux grew up in a small town in Normandy, her parents were former factory workers who managed to get out of the factory world and to own a cafe and a small grocers. They wanted what was best their daughter, and could afford a good private school. She was a very good ...more

Camille Claudel is such a tragic character: a talented sculptor she was betrayed by her lover (Rodin) and by her brother (Paul Claudel). She was called crazy in a time when women where mere objects of afection and/or adoration. She went against the idea of a woman at the end of the nineteenth century, with her approach to art, love, sex and intimacy. She, with Artemisia Gentileschi, are two of my favorite artists ever: they dared to go against the tides and where beaten by them, but never conque ...more

I read a biography of Camille for a book club, and thought I'd enjoy this novel. I preferred the biography, since the novel wasn't exactly Marcel Proust, and talked a lot about Camille's brother Paul, who is not one of my favorite writers. But on the whole not bad.

inspirational with good insight to a female artist(sculpturer)'s life. engaging narration. i remember the book with sepia colours and darkness but also a feeling of tactility.
