<default_description>Good news! Fannie’s back in town--and the town is among the leading characters in her new novel.

Along with Neighbor Dorothy, the lady with the smile in her voice, whose daily radio broadcasts keep us delightfully informed on all the local news, we also meet Bobby, her ten-year-old son, destined to live a thousand lives, most of them in his imagination; Norma and Macky Warren and their ninety-eight-year-old Aunt Elner; the oddly sexy and charismatic Hamm Sparks, who starts off in life as a tractor salesman and ends up selling himself to the whole state and almost the entire country; and the two women who love him as differently as night and day. Then there is Tot Whooten, the beautician whose luck is as bad as her hairdressing skills; Beatrice Woods, the Little Blind Songbird; Cecil Figgs, the Funeral King; and the fabulous Minnie Oatman, lead vocalist of the Oatman Family Gospel Singers.

The time is 1946 until the present. The town is Elmwood Springs, Missouri, right in the middle of the country, in the midst of the mostly joyous transition from war to peace, aiming toward a dizzyingly bright future.

Once again, Fannie Flagg gives us a story of richly human characters, the saving graces of the once-maligned middle classes and small-town life, and the daily contest between laughter and tears. Fannie truly writes from the heartland, and her storytelling is, to quote Time, "utterly irresistible."

From the Hardcover edition.</default_description>

Loved this book! I would consider it light reading. Part of what I liked about this book was that it took me back to good memories. My mother used to listen to the Kitchen Klatter show on the radio, get their newsletters and buy their flavorings. I felt like this book was a connection to those day...more...

I liked this book even better than "Can't Wait to Get to Heaven". It's the pre-quel to it, so you get more insight into the characters. The story line is funny, but so real that you find yourself saying, "Hey! Did David Brinkley really say that?"
I think the 5 star system ...more...

This is a book that, through the stories of one or two families, is almost entirely made up of reminiscing and recounting trends in America from the 1940s until the 1990s. For me, it was most interesting because it came from my mom, who was born in 1941, and thus it seemed to magnify some of her lif...more...

I enjoyed this light read. It was engaging and very funny. It seemed to have about 20 different main characters whose lives were woven together in a small midwestern town. The story, however, revolved around 'Neighbor Dorthy' who had a talk radio show in the 1940's. I would recommend this for an...more...

I didn't feel that this book was up to Fannie Flagg's usual standards. It covers 50 years of life in a small town and parts of that were interesting, but the characters didn't seem to pull in the reader and they definitely weren't as strange as in some of her other books. An OK read, in my opinion...more...

This is just a sweet, meandering tale about characters from a small Missouri town. It follows them from the 1940s to the 1990s. A lot of the characters are interesting, but there was a little too much nostalgia/things-were-so-much-better-back-in-the-olden-days stuff for me. Still, a nice, relaxing r...more...
