The Journey of Desire: Searching for the Life We Always Dreamed of
Sometimes it seems we just can't get what we want. Circumstances thwart our best-laid plans. We struggle to live a heartfelt life. Worst of all, says Eldredge, the modern church mistakenly teaches its people to kill desire (calling it sin) and replace it with duty or obligation (calling it sanctification). As a result, at best Christians tend to live safe, boring lives of...more

John Eldredge’s The Journey of Desire is a book that met me right where I needed to be. The basic premise of this work is that people need to recover their desires, their true desires, and go after them. For believers, that means we need to thirst for and long for life with God that we also need to follow those desires that are given to us - our vocations, our passions, our loves. . . Wow, did I need to be reminded of that. As Eldredge points out, so much of life tells us to deaden our desires,...more
I did not like this book. I did, however, love another one of his books; "Walking with God; Talk to Him, Hear from Him" . I believe timing of reading them in my life had everything to do with liking one book; not liking the other. I must be fair.
I read this book while single, while going through some challenges at work with the certainty of the position I was posted in as temporary (hoping for permanency). I was in a new city, trying something different. I thought this book would help me. I was...more

I tend to rate books on how much they'll be memorable and continue to change my life after I'm done reading them.
I read part of this book and then returned to it. I don't recall a whole lot about the first 3/4, but the last quarter of the book made it well worth it for me.
Eldredge talked a lot about desire and how God created us with a restless longing for him. I've spent a lot of my life shying away from desire, thinking it wrong, or wrong in an unmarried season of life, at least. Eldredge co...more

We are never living, but hoping to live. –Blaise Pascal
It seems to me we can never give up longing and wishing while we are alive. There are certain things we feel to be beautiful and good, and we must hunger for them. –George Eliot
And I still haven’t found what I’m looking for. –U2

This book was excellent. Addresses the unobtainable goal of trying to create the perfect existence on earth instead of acknowledging that our lives are a preparation for the heaven. Written in the wake of the death of Eldredge's closest friend he talks about coming to grips with not being "in control" but having a strong desire to do so. In the style that Eldredge is known for he employs numerous references from popular culture (song lyrics and movies) as well as anecdotes from his time counseli...more
Very insightful book. The author uses the tragic death of a friend to frame his thoughts around the question of "Desire" in our lives. What do we live for? What is our purpose; our calling? The author wonderfully expresses the problem statement of living a status-quo life in our day-to-day living, and then goes on to express what a true eternally minded, purpose filled, life might look like. Filled with Biblical truths, and quotes & references to other authors, the book presents many practic...more
This was a book that I read at just the right time of my life and hit me where I was. At one point I was in tears as I sat reading a section on an airplane ride. John helps his readers to see that we have natural desires that are God-given in the way He created us, and usually when we are succumbing to the traps of certain repetitive sins it's because we are looking to fulfill these desires (sometimes unbeknownst to ourselves) in the wrong way. Rather than suppress the desires, we are to seek th...more
This was my first Eldredge book. I was looking for some peace and maybe even hope. The book started out strong. It's like he was talking to me, you know, "do you yearn for more in this life" kind of stuff. I was excited, thinking I was going to discover something new... and then it settled back into the expected:
this life is supposed to suck... enjoy the small joys... the only true happiness is in the next life...
Well, I guess I already knew that... was just looking for, you know, a great "che...more

Borrowed this in the audio version from a super awesome person, so I knew it would be good. I've previously experienced Eldredge works through "Fathered by God", "Wild at Heart", and "The Sacred Romance", along with the audio version of "Captivating". With the expection of The Sacred Romance, I have found his writing as a call to my heart, and this was no exception. How do we view earthly desire and how does it live harmoniously with our spiritual being? I think that is the major question this b...more
Eldredge is now one of my favorite authors. I have devoured each of his books that I have read. Like water for a thirsty soul, they touch a deep inner part of me that craves something more. Desire is something we often try to avoid, for too often we are hurt by not getting what we desire. In this book, desire is seen not as the enemy but as what we must cultivate for our life that is to come. It cannot be found in this life. We were made for more.

I read this book in hopes it would illuminate my understanding concerning the way God has made me and how to abound in holy desire.
Poignant Quotes:
We cannot live without the yearning, and yet the yearning sets us up for disappointment - sometimes deep and devastating disappointment
Do we reach for nothing life because our reaching opens us up to tragedy?
How long can we sustain desire against continual disappointment?
eternal life is primarily quality not duration
Christianity has nothing to say to...more

i hoped this book was going to be better than the previous book "Sacred Romance". i guess this just isnt my thing. again, i wanted to like it. it started off better than the first book. the writing is better, generally. he uses less quotes and anecdotes (though it wouldnt be an Eldredge book without ANY quotes. there are a lot in there, just not as many as the first).
so why didnt i like it? well. it's the same book, more or less. i didnt think that The Sacred Romance needed a whole to talk abou...more

This book really met me where I was, when I read it during a vacation in Barbados. It speaks to two things: on the negative side, how the world, our disappointments and frustrations really tempt us to settle for a lesser life, rather than pursing a life lived in fellowship with God. The metaphor he gives us is a sea lion who has lost sight of the ocean, which he was meant for, and decides to make do with a tiny pool of water in the desert. However, the ocean still calls to us - like God and eter...more
Another book I recommend people who are having a hard time finding out what they're suppose to do with their life. This book will make you go back to childhood and really remember what you always wanted to do. This book will help you stop being ashamed of wanting to be what you've always wanted to be and not told anyone and will help you tackle life in a new way. it helped me. :]
A watershed moment in my life, when I realized that God's plans for us really are good...what we would ask him for if we knew everything that he knows. Some stuff could be misinterpreted as saying that we should pursue selfishness, so it needs to be read carefully...look up the Scripture references in context to make sure the point is coming across clearly.
Generally, I'm not into non-fiction, and especially not so-called self-help books, but this one came at a very difficult time in my life and truly helped me find peace, clarity, and healing. I would recomend to anyone who is struggling with questions such as "Why is this happening to me?" and "Where is God when life hurts?"
Again, a truly wonderful book that every Christian should read. Eldredge again makes the point of how important it is to understand the workings of our heart. Desires play such a crucial role in our lives, and unfortunately, we all overlook them at some point in our life. Eldredge discusses desires in a very real way that does not skim over the fact that we've all been disappointed and hurt by our desires, rather he puts those disappointments and the pain in perspective. If you feel that in orde...more

I am just enjoying and learning how to "desire" something, through this amazing book.Of course, to desire things that will bring the best that God has to me.

John Eldredge is an author (you probably figured that out), a counselor, and teacher. He is also president of Ransomed Heart, a ministry devoted to helping people discover the heart of God, recover their own heart in his love, and learn to live in his Kingdom.
