I've loved Bear's short fiction on Escape Pod, so was excited to get my hands on one of her full length novels. And I was not dissapointed! This is a sweeping, elegant story that meshes technology with ancient mythology. There's a bit of melodrama, but I think that just goes hand in hand with the whole "valkyrie" theme, and its really not overbearing. It's Norse-tastic! Which is to say, the world ends, everyone is doomed, and then the world ends some more. A two-headed flying thing is centrally involved, and main battle shoggoths are mentioned. Also, there's some love stuff, which is equally doomed.
The actual book jacket does not bear out the goodreads entry's indication that this is the first of a series, and I'm not sure what could be done for a sequel. There's probably room for prequels or side stories, though.

This is a gorgeous tale based off of the Edda - old Norse tales. This is kind of a "What happened after Ragnarok" sort of tale, and it's by turns unexpected and surprising. Characters did not always do what I expected of them, but ultimately they were true to themselves.
I am looking forward to rereading this when I'm not quite in the mode of just gobbling it down as fast as possible.
