This is a difficult book to write a review about. I've been an avid fan of Anne Rice's books since I was in junior high, since I love her style of writing and of course her gothic themes (vampires, demons, witches).
Lasher is the second novel of the Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy. The first is "The Witching Hour" and the third is "Taltos". I guess I have to find Taltos a.s.a.p. in order to complete this whole er...journey.

I read this in highschool also. It is book 2 in the Mayfair witches series.
The Talamasca, documenters of paranormal activity, is on the hunt for the newly born Lasher. Mayfair women are dying from hemorrhages and a strange genetic anomaly has been found in Rowan and Michael. Lasher, born from Rowan, is another species altogether and now in the corporeal body, represents an incalcuable threat to the Mayfairs. Rowan and Lasher travel together to Houston and she becomes pregnant with another...more

This is not a bad book. But being the sequel of The Witching Hour, which was a masterpiece, it definitely doesn't stand up to expectations. The first 2/3 of the book are actually good, the story continues and you are eager to see how it will develop. But the final part, where Lasher talks about his previous life, is incredibly boring. It might have been interesting if it wasn't so long, because it does give you insights on who he really is and sort of gives a different perspective to a character...more

Those who liked 'The Witching Hour'
This book was weaker than its predecessor (The Witching Hour), and was a bit of a dissapointment. It continues the story line and explains what happens to Lasher and to the Mayfair family, and also explaind what Lasher actually IS. So I DO recommend it for whomever read and fell in the spell of the first book, because it answers a lot of questions.
I liked this book much more when I first read it, but now, on a second reading, it doesn't live up to my expectations. Somehow, it does not have t...more

I hated this book. I gave it 3 stars in reverence of it being the sequel to "The Witching Hour" which I loved. I'm not generally a squeamish reader, but this one took it too far. The overwhelming and almost venerated abundance of incest and borderline pedophilia, the incredibly disturbing attitude toward rape, the lack of interest in coherence in plot... these all added up to a huge mess that I couldn't wait to put down. Rowan and Lasher explore their complicated relationship through a...more

I love this book. The witching hour for me was a lot more enjoyable than a lot of the later Vampire chronicles. The witching hour has a touch of realism to it. It deals with old fashion backward southern stereotypes of incest, and a little of the old young girls, older men thing. I love the gore factor of this book. Its necessary to the story, you can't have all this sex, and other thing explained without the horrifying consequences.

people who really love Rice- and no one else.
Not Rice's strongest, that's for sure! Throughout this novel Rice uses words and descriptions which made me awkward and grossed out. I don't mean your good, old-fashioned vampire gore and blood-lust, but rather the word miscarriage repeated 50,000 times and a detailed account of what a mattress looks like when someone's been tied to it for a really long time without any potty breaks. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't the simple existence of such topics in the story that disappointed me- just that he...more

Anyone interested in lavish lifestyles, or fans of the first novel.
Although I skipped The Witching Hour, I did get the chance to read this one. I have to say that I didn't like it nearly as much as I enjoyed the Vampire Chronicles. Readers looking for the same allure the vampires offer will be disappointed. However, not left out is the lush narrative and bold dialogue we've come to expect from Rice's works. I found the characters a bit bland, and it was difficult to feel any sort of emotion for them--which can probably be called the reason for my not lik...more

This book was lent to me by a dear comrade David. If you read "The Witching Hour" then this is a definite must-read because it goes much deeper into the life of Rowan and introduces new and necessary characters. It makes a lot of historical references and attempts to explain so of life's mysteries, which was entertaining. I don't want to give anything away so I'll be annoyingly vague: A LOT happens.

Great book, lots of incest and weird stuff so if that sort of thing might bother you then don't pick it up. Very sexually explicit. I love how Anne Rice can build a whole new world based on the one we know and make her stories seem so real. She took this family and built up a whole history, even though that's more in The Witching Hour. I thought this book was well worth the time.

The sequel to The Witching Hour - another spellbinding read. This book was another dark tale that follows this particular family. Definately entertaining. The first book is more about the women in this large family, the second is about the spirit that plagued them throughout the years and his agenda.

I loved Witching Hour, but after that book this series just fell apart. Lasher was s struggle to finish, Taltos was even worse. I could care about the human characters, like Michael, in Witching Hour, the characters in the other tw titles are just shadow figures enmeshed in their own unrealistic world.

Couldn't put it down; maybe because I spent a lot of time traveling that year or it was as I said about book one, completely ensconcing. From big cities to the back swamps of New Orleans, and what else? Rich characters fighting their own demons while contending with a very real and powerful one.

I bought this book after reading The Witching Hour, but I couldn't get through it. I really really would like to finish it. Its been so long since I read The Witching Hour though, that I think I will have to re-read it in order to read this one. I want it to make sense the first time around.

le sigh - it has been so long since I read this book, but just seeing the title again gives me chills. I remember when I picked this book up literally not being able to put it down again until I had read the entire thing. Now I am about to go buy a new copy so I can reread it again =)

In the second book to The Mayfair Witched trilogy Lasher was a great read. It kept me in suspense and every page turned was another exciting experience. I loved this book as it brought together the entity that kept the first book going. It was both exciting and riveting. I loved it.

This is the first Anne Rice book I have read. It was hard to get into at first and there are many characters over several generations. About halfway through, I really started to get into it. It felt long but was satisfying in the end. Weird though.

Not as good as the Witching Hour but still an excellent read. Old characters from the Witching Hour are examined in further detail and new and exciting characters are introduced. Again, I would be careful who you recommend this one to.

Anne Rice is amazing! She has a way with details... I have to admit I was a little horrified at the way this book ended, but I assume that's the feeling she was going for. I've already got the next book in the trilogy ready to read.
