Open the covers of this extraordinarily inventive, interactive book to find that the cats inside are ready to play — in very surprising ways.

There they are, purring under a blanket. But not for long! Three sprightly cats named Tiny, Moonpie, and Andre are eager to involve you in their games, whether it's tossing a ball of yarn (oof!), lifting flaps to find them in boxes (c...more

Ohhhhhh this might be my new favorite picture book! I love the colorful cats, the loose, happy illustrations, the lift-the-flaps, and the interactive nature of this book. This would be too much fun to read aloud. Good for fans of The Monster at the End of This Book and Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.

A book that made me feel like I was two! The thrill and squeal of two.

I love the play of the page cuts and flaps. (The parent in me was relieved that the lower right hand corner was often rounded off, which I'm imagining is baby-finger-friendlier. Then the parent cringed at the box that any baby would want to open isn't a box that can open.)

I made all the big babies in my life read it and everybody loved it.

Wonderful pop-up action in this charming book as the reader plays with three cats who tangle yarn, investigate boxes, have a pillow fight and are swept away by a tidal wave of fish. This is a book for sitting on laps - not so much for story hours - as little ones will want to turn the pages themselves.

Sometimes when a picture book works really well, it's a delight regardless of what age you are. The best ones work at a level accessible to everyone, bringing different levels of nuance and meaning to an apparently simplistic concept. They are very hard to do, and very hard to do well.

This, my friends, is brilliant. There Are Cats In This Book is a glorious lovely thing that had me giggling as I turned the pages. It is a very straightforward premise; the cats in the book are waiting for somebody...more

After wandering through this book, I immediately checked who had it. I ordered it as part of the Opening Day Collection for a new branch in our system. After congratulating myself for my brilliance, I immediately shot off an email to the person buying picture books suggesting she buy more copies if possible, if only for the New Main library opening next year. This book is just utterly charming! The person who recommended it to me said she had a child who was so entranced by the book, she came an...more

CUTE! Interact with three cats who want you to play with them. My favorite page is the yarn page where you "throw" a ball of yarn at one of the cats and he says "Oof!"

If you like this book, you may like "There Are No Cats In This Book" by the same author.

Well, here’s a case when I seem to disagree with most Goodreads members about this book. It was just ok for me. The interactive flaps were cute, but too flimsy (too easy to tear) for the very young child targeted audience. It was cute but I didn’t find it very entertaining and I think there are better interactive books out there for the picture book set. AND, I do like cats so that was not my issue with it.

This book is SO much fun!!! I know I would have loved it as a kid--I was totally into "pop up" books. This one is more lift-the-flap variety and is wonderfully interactive. It would be great encouragement for reluctant "readers" as it involves the kids in the story and they must be active in order for the tale to progress. The three adorable kitties greet the reader and say "You look very nice" and invite the reader to come along and play with them. Why, isn't that a ball of yarn on the next pag...more

Oh how adorable!

This book is about three cats who ask the reader to play with them, because, as they say, "You look nice."

I'm not sure I would have realized this book's reading benefits for new readers had Kathryn not already pointed it out, but they are definitely there! For any reader who isn't too keen on reading, this is a great way to get them interested, because the reader is asked by the kittens to turn the page so that the kittens can play with the string on the next page, see the fish...more

Ok, I have a new favorite cat book! Reminicent of The Monster at the end of this book , the cats in Viviane Schwarz's book talk to the reader encourging him/her to throw them yarn, open a box or turn the page so that they can get fish. The bold illustrations are fun and make you smile even before you read the text. Pair this with If you give a cat a cupcake for a purrfectly meowvelous storytime.

A fantastically interactive story for young children. You'll love almost as much as your child playing along with Moonpie, Tiny and Andre.

The sturdiness of the construction, like so many other books, leaves a little to be desired - the warning on the back of the book that it is not suitable for those under 3 if followed would significantly reduce the audience for this book.

Reminiscent of the classic The Monster at the End of this Book - but with the added element of plenty of flaps to play with.

Super fun giggly book that got my 4 yr old daughter completely involved in listening - reacting (w/ a tiny bit of tense delight) - answering - and turning the pages (forwards & backwards) almost as fast as I could read them. *You'll understand*

My Daughter and I also loved the illustrations (Mostly done in primary colors) - lift-the-flap pages - and layout as well. A couple of the pages would make us just giggle before even reading a word on the page.

This is currently one of her new favorite...more

This is a great book, conceptually, textually, and pictorially! I would have given it a 4.5 or even 5 rating, IF ONLY the paper engineering had been better -- the choice of not very sturdy paper, the excessive glue on some pages (two pages came glued together) and the careless placement of some of the edges of the flaps all contribute to reduce the "usefulness" of this book. A toddler book meant for little hands (with strength enough to tear each flap off of the page on the first encounter) shou...more

I know...this is an older book, but I used it in Toddler Storytime this morning (again) and wanted to post here how much I love this book.

I use it as a direct conversation with the toddlers and they have to "help" me turn the pages by counting to three. Sometimes it is a regular count, sometimes fast (when our friends need our help!), and sometimes quietly. When the furries need to be dried, we do a 1-2-3 and then blow as we turn the page.

Loads of interactive fun and a chance for me to do some p...more

Rated and reviewed by Dylan, age 7:

This book is about three cats that play jokes. They talk to you like funny words like "throw me some yarn" "oof. Ha ha." My favorite parts were the yarn where a little cat says throw me some and then you turn something and he says oof and where you open up the boxes and they say stuff to you and there was another favorite part where one of the cats says pillow fight and the yellow and the red cats hit him with their pillow. I really like this book.

A playful adventure of a book, in the company of three lovably cheeky cats whose continued cries of 'Turn the page! Turn the page!' propel the reader from one fun filled activity to another. Whether hiding under blankets or in boxes, throwing pillows or tangling balls of wool, these cats have huge fun - but when things go wrong, it is the reader who must save them - by turning the page!
A glorious, joyful romp of a read, gleefully inventive and utterly satisfying.

This creative book is so fun. The cats want to play with you - are you ready? Turn the pages back and forth to have a yarn ball fight! Save the kitties from the water when they go after fish! This one is a great example of print motivation and will get the most reluctant and squirmy child to sit and look at the pictures and interact with the cats. I'm not a cat lover and I still love this book!

This is a fun little story that features three adorable cats (in somewhat bizarre shades of red, yellow and blue.) It just so happens to be very convenient that I read with our two girls, so we each took a character (I got to be André) and read his dialogue. The lift-the flap features and oddly shaped pages make this a fun book to read aloud and look at the illustrations with children. We really enjoyed reading this story together, but then again I always am a sucker for a book about cats...

This is so fun! I grew up loving "The Monster at the End of This Book" where Grover keeps imploring you not to turn the page. In this one, the cats want you to turn the pages, so they can play with yarn or have a pillow fight or play in boxes. The art is funky and bold - good for little ones - and the pages have cool flaps or peek-a-boo edges. Great interactive read!

The cats aren't on this page, but they'd like to play with you.

Readers interact with Andre, Tiny, and Moonpie by turning pages/flaps that are balls of yarn, pillows, and water. The cats are very supportive, "Ooh, you're *are* good at turning pages!" and will invite you to come back and play another time. Schwartz's illustrations are simple in bright colors with collage-y bits thrown in to keep things from getting too dull. The constructions are clever, and support the text and illustrations rath...more

This book was great! I bought it for my nephew and didn't realise just how much he would like it until I read it to him. He was getting right in to it, turning the pages, lifting the flaps and blowing on the cats (to help them dry). That was so much fun!

This is definitely the sort of book that toddlers (and cat lovers) really love.

One of the better children books I have read recently. This book had me smiling and laughing. I recommend this book for those who love "The monster at the end of this book" or people who like cats or fun children's books or interactive/pop-up like books. I may try some of her other stories.

This is a really fun book for younger children. It directly involves the reader in an adorable story about three lively cats with lots to do. the illustrations and the story are simple, but the fun with lifting flaps, blowing on the page, and searching to find them is a good time for every one.
Vicki
There are flaps with cats hiding and doing different cat activities which is fun. I shared this book during PreSchool Story Time at the library and felt I lost this age group during this reading. Perhaps this book would come across better with a one on one reading.
Molly
This is the best read alike I have found for the monster at the end of this book. I think Maggie may have helped write this book. One of my favorite this year. I want the string. I want to turn the pages of this book and get the string. Ages 2+
Ubalstecha
This is just a cute book that has the reader opening flaps for the three cat protagonists of the book. Each flap reveals cat friendly items like fish and yarn. Wonderful to read to a young child in bed to help pass on the love of reading.
Barbara
A perfect interactive book for cat lovers. Clever use of cut-outs and page turns will entertain young readers. This is a great example of what Jean Gralley means when she talks about exploding the picture book out of its cover.
Angie
This book is great! The text is participatory, much like the Mo Willems pigeon books. It offers an army of playful cats who engage the reader in their antics!! And, there are cats in this book!!! What more could you want?
