I wanted to like this more than I did. It started so promisingly, and I'd had a break from this series of several months, which helped. But all too quickly the long-winded reflective introspective passages started up, the oh-so-stubborn lip-nibbling heroine got annoying, and the flowery love scenes got, well, flowery.

Darius is the younger brother of Gregori and was born with many of the same magical, healing talents. His sister, Desari, is a famous singer and the lifemate of Julian. Darius has been looking after his sister and the other Carpathian band members since they were all children and their parents were brutally murdered by human vampire-hunters. After centuries of this kind of responsibility Darius has grown up to become a very alpha kind of guy. He is also very close to turning.

This one I loved. It is by far my favorite in the Carpathians series, as of now. Tempest "Rusti" Trine is the most well-developed heroine we've seen so far this series. The heroines in the previous books have mainly been defined by their over-the-top compassion and gentleness. I found them kind of tedious and uninteresting. Tempest though is spunky and genuinely funny. The dialogue here was much better than in the previous books. Darius as well I found much less overdone than the other heroes. T...more

Ok, I know I say this everytime, but this is my favorite of the series so far!
I really enjoyed Darius and Tempest's storyline (especially all of the stuff with the leopards.) After reading the last book, I was so happy to see that both Darius and Barack found their lifemates. I'm slao glad she told this story right after the last one - it really cleared things up for me.
This book was great and I loved that Tempest could communicate telepathically with the animals!

Finally! I feel that this book gave me the uniqueness that I have been looking for! The heroine isn't sitting back and doing nothing. She is actually trying to fight it and in the end, it is her decision that decides the book and not something he did to her. While Darius is the typical, arrogant, commanding Carpathian, he is nicely balanced with Tempest's red-headed temper and love of life. I also felt like the reader gets a more realistic look at how it might be. Rusti's claustrophobia and Dari...more
When Darius, the leader of a small band of Carpathian musicians, first sees the new mechanic hired to work on the band's touring vehicles, he is astonished to see the red colour of her hair. It has been centuries since he last saw colours or even felt emotions. Although mechanic Tempest Trine needs the job, she quickly realizes she's bitten off more than she can chew. Tempest has always felt different, apart from others. But from the moment his arms close around her, enveloping her in a sorcerer...more
I admit that I'm a bit obsessive about finishing a series once I've started it. I have not been looking forward to finishing this series. While I enjoyed book 1, books 2-5 seemed to be a rehash of Danielle Steele meets vampires ... or rather Carpathians ... with one dimensional characters and the same storyline. Book 6 gave me hope that the series might be picking up speed. While not a thought-provoking classic, the characters were definitely better developed and I enjoyed the book. For fans of...more
I have a real weakness for the Daratraznoff family. I love all their books and the men in this family are to die for. First Gregori and now Darius. It is enough to make a girl swoon. Darius has been on his own for so long. He saved himself, his baby sister and four other young children when their parents were killed by the invading Turks. I love Darius courage and honor and his fear for his small family. Tempest "Rusti" is such a hoot throughout this books. She gives Darius no end of fits but s...more
Taking the job as mechanic seemed a good fit for Tempest ‘Rusti’ Trine, she never really fit in anywhere else, but this group of traveling troubadours sounded like a perfect match right down to their love of animals. As soon as Darius realized a human was in the camp he had to meet her, especially after he started to see all the colors around him shining for the first time in centuries. The way Tempest accepted them and most of the things they could do was one thing, but would she be strong enou...more
This series is still inordinately formulaic, but I remain hopeful that at some point in the coming books the shift that enables the books to be more UF and less PNR (as suggested in the much later offering of Dark Slayer in this series) will occur.
This book, Dark Fire, has nothing new to offer. In fact, unless you are only looking for a pure romance with very little of anything else occurring, this could be skipped in terms of the series or any long story arcs.

In Dark Fire, readers are taken back into Feehan's Carpathians world with the focus on Darius, a powerful Carpathian male who is about to give in the the darkness and become vampire. For if a Carpathian male can not find their lifemate, they either give in to the darkness of their nature, or choose to meet the dawn. Luckily, fate has a lifemate in mind for this dark, dangerous, and formidable male, and she def gives him a run for his money.

Tempest, who has gone through most of her life calling herself Rusty, never expected the job with the Dark Troubadours to lead her into a type of trouble that would change her life forever. But meeting Darius, brother to Desari and the 'security' of the group, did just that.
Tempest is human, but with the ability to speak to animals, through their minds, and in meeting Darius she unlocks in him the ability to feel emotions and see colors once more. The sign that she is this Carpathian's life mat...more

Once again, a good book, but one which had the potential to be fantastic yet didn't go there. I liked the book, mostly because I like the characters. The plot was ok, but not great. It was much the same as previous ones where the heroine doesn't want to give up her independence in exchange for a mega hunk macho man who totally floats her boat. I just don't get it. And in the end she ends up being exactly the type of woman she wants to be plus she gets the mega hunk too. Just as she would have fr...more
This was my introduction to Christine Feehan's Dark series and since then I have been hooked. I can't say enough good things about her fictitious Carpathian race. Darius and Rusti's chemistry oozed through the pages. Even years later I cannot forget this book or these two characters. My mom and I are avid Feehan readers. Ms. Feehan got it just right with this one; in my opinion. A perfect blend of the dark and the romantic. Her books always let you jump right into the major conflict of the novel...more
This book seems to aviate to an extent from the theme that Feehan has already established because rather than a vampire interferring, its the society that feature entirely in the trouble between Darius and Tempest.
However it does follow the hero complex of the woman saving the man, nearly giving her life etc. Despite all of this, I still enjoyed the book and I found this story much more refreshing than the last which ran a little too dry for me.

I have not picked up a Feehan book in over a year and a half and I gotta say...I missed those sexy Carpathians!
Dark Fire delivered sexy vamps, fantastic fight scenes, hot steamy love scenes (as only Mrs. Feehan can deliver), and bad guys that will pay for messing with what does not belong to them.
This book revolved around Darius and Tempest.

We have Darius one of our "lost" Carpathians, head of his family of troubadours. In walks Rusti, mechanic extraordinaire and we have lifemates at first sight. The book follows them through getting to know each other and surviving various attacks. I don't think this is a spoiler since as with all of the Dark Series aka Carpathians we have a fairly formula read. Although, Darius is a bit more likable character and Tempest is still the scared mortal who keeps running away.

I finished reading this book the other day. I have read most of the books in this series and have to say that this story was a little refreshing from the other Carpathian series. During this part of the series Feehan had a couple of plot structures that she adapted to whichever characters were in the book. I had read Desari’s story and Dayan’s story and this one falls between, so it was good to read. These sections of the series were about the evil being in the human vampire-hunters. It would ha...more

I found this book a little more than 'okay' because it was fun seeing Julian and Desari as awesome supporting characters and the Barack/Syndil pairing is really cute and adorable. There were also times that Tempest made me laugh because of her penchant for trouble, awful sense of direction, and her sarcastic remarks. I also appreciated her using her ingenuity to protect herself and Darius' troupe. I just wish that she had stood up to Darius more than she did. So much wasted femme...more

Dark Fire was definitely one of Feehan's best, and it is definitely one of my favorites in the series. Darius and Tempest were great leading characters, but I also liked the presence of the secondary characters like Desari, Julian, Syndil, Barack, and Dayan who made up Darius's family and became Tempest's family as well. I loved that there was a lot of action in the book as Tempest found herself thrust into a battle that had been waged against Darius and his family in a previous book. I haven't...more

My sister, the hopeless romantic
I was a pre-teen when I read this book and I thought it was the most romantic book ever. Then as a teenager I broke down that glass wall, threw away the tinted glasses, and gained something of value called self-respect. I re-read "Dark Fire" and hated it. Christine Feehan may be a legendary author but in my opinion she uses too many repetitive themes and her character developments are weak and sidetracked by sex and meaningless arguments.

By the time I started reading Dark Fire, the 6th book in Christine Feehan’s Dark Series, I was hooked…..the Carpathians are just beyond amazing…..Never mind that there is a huge amount of repetition and I know….some of the descriptions the author uses are a bit over the top…..check….velvet sheath….but nothing can change my mind….I am totally addicted to these books.
This is my favourite book so far…..of course it may change as I continue reading the next book in this series.

I know I've said this multiple times with this Dark series that they're all pretty similar but I really do like them. If you ever just want a good love story to get away and read, these are a nice little fix to hold you over. But this one is, so far, the best I've read there are more differences in this one than in the other one, it seems to have more meaning knowing that this guy wasn't like all the other Carpathians. He wasn't raised with knowing the traditions, what's expected to happen, and...more
There was nothing terribly significant in this book plot-wise. It's the classic story of Vampire Hunter meets girl, is hunted by fanatics, makes sweet love. Yes. Classic. Unlike the last book that seemed to progress the overall story arc quite a bit, this one didn't so much go there. The story of Darius (Desari's brother, Book #5) and Tempest and the trials and tribulations they have to face as she is forced to admit that supernatural creatures exist and he is one of them. I liked the book, don'...more
This book is where my enjoyment of the Dark series started to head south, and I don't mean that as a euphemism for enjoyment in my lady bits. I had really liked the Dark novella/short story in The Only One collection so much so that I found other titles in the series.
But I got to this one and made the mistake of listening to it as an audiobook, since most of my "reading" is actually listening. Doing that just killed any enjoyment I was going to have because I couldn't stand to actually listen to...more

Another great installment in the Carpathian series! Yes, they are very formulaic but the formula is a good one and Feehan finds ways to keep each book interesting and unique.
I really liked Darius in the last book so was looking forward to his story. His overbearing, dictatorship-type attitude and know-it-all personality was above and beyond even a Carpathian in this book, which initially made him hard to like. Wow... I'll admit that it's been about 5 years since I've last read this book but I don't remember it being quite so... uhmmm... dysfunctional. Darius is down right creepy in this possessiveness. I remember that I stopped reading this series because I felt it was really repetitious and all the male characters where the same with different names. I've given it 3 stars because at one point I really loved this book... clearly I was at a different point in my life and extreme, codependent bonding wa...more

“None of this…none of this…whatever you call this.” She waved her hand to encompass everything. Kissing. Taking her blood. Seducing her. Ordering her around. Setting perimeters. All of it.
His black gaze never left her face. His eyes as still as those of a leopard scenting prey. Avid. Burning. Intense. He took her breath away with his eyes. Hypnotized her. Cast a spell over her.
Tempest pulled her gaze from his, from the seductive, black velvet trap. “And stop that, too,” she said decisively, despite the fact that he made her hungry for him.
“Stop what?”
“Stop looking at me that way, it’s definitely out. You can’t look at me that way. It’s cheating.”
“How am I looking at you?” His deep voice dropped even lower, the cadence soft and husky. Mesmerizing. “Okay, that’s out, too. No talking in that tone of voice,” she declared staunchly. “And you know very well what you’re doing. Act normal.”
His white teeth gleamed at her, nearly stopping her heart. “I am acting normal, Tempest.”
