--The Herald

If you aren't a Jostein Gaarder's fan , you might probably not like this one very much.

This is a very well written book . Jostein always takes us to a very unique place where we dream under a kinda vanilla sky!

There are many stories in this novel narrated in his astonishing way .

Loved the chess story .

Gaarder is one of my very fav. authors , but this one can't be compared with Sophie's World or The Solitaire Mystery.

Still, am gonna read each and every book he wrote that i can find.
I just love th...more

Disini letaknya semua rahasia kebahagiaan! [hal 225:]

Imajinasi. Itulah mainan terdahsyat yang dimiliki oleh manusia. Manusia bebas melakukan apapun lewat imajinasinya. Bahkan segala kehidupan tak lepas dengan imajinasi. Dari imajinasi, kreativitas muncul, tak ayal lewat imajinasi karya-karya besar lahir...more

Satu lagi novel karya penulis Norwegia, Jostein Gaarder, Putri Sirkus dan Lelaki Penjual Dongeng (seterusnya disebut Putri Sirkus saja), diterjemahkan dan diterbitkan dalam bahasa Indonesia menyusul tiga novel sebelumnya : Dunia Sophie, Misteri Soliter, dan Gadis Jeruk. Jika pada dua novel pertama Jostein memasukkan kandungan filsafat yang cukup kental, maka untuk Gadis Jeruk dan Putri Sirkus nyaris tanpa bumbu filsafat, sehingga, buat pembaca awam filsafat seperti saya, lebih mudah mengunyahnya...more

buku bagus... jostein memang salah satu favoritku...

Peter tahu betul kekuatan m...more

"My brain is seething. I'm bubbling with hundreds of new ideas. They just keep welling up. Before I manage to dwell on one of my inspirations, it generally melts into an even better idea, but this, too, is so fickle of character that I struggle to save it from the constant volcanic stream of new ideas..."

In an old fairy story Panina Manina, a trapeze artist, falls and breaks her neck. As the ringmaster bends over her he notices an amulet of amber around her neck, the same trinket he had given hi...more

Jostening Gaarder's most fleshed-out character in one of his silliest plots. The book is written in autobiographical form as the fictional Petter flops about through life and women with no general direction and a few contrived plot twists.

Also, there is a highly bland excess of emotional acrobatics as Petter, whenever frightened or confused, launches into never-ending passages of how he feels and what if things aren't going as planned and what did that mysterious person imply? It's all very sill...more

In the past I have enjoyed reading Gaarder's work and I was looking forward to reading The Ringmasters Daughter. However, I got up to p95 and have to say I put it away. I hate not finishing a book, hate it! I will often fight to get to the end but on this occasion I just thought 'either life is too short or I am just not feeling Gaarder anymore'.

I shouldn't review a book I never finished and I suppose I won't review this fully. It is each to her/his own and other reviews give glowing accounts of...more

Gaarder recreates the magic of Sophie's World with a great story line combined with deep, deep thoughts. My favorite paragraph: "Watching Limelight with my mother really brought home to me the brevity of life. I realized in a little while that I would die and leave everything behind. Unlike vain people, I had the ability to think this right through. I had no difficulty in picturing full theatres and cinemas long after myself was gone. Not everybody can do that. Many are so intoxicated with sensu...more

I have long been an admirer of Jostein Gaarder's style of writing since my high school days. As a native Chinese I have read most of his works in Chinese translated editions, however under unusual circumstances I have happened to read this in its English edition and I'm glad I have done so.

As similar to Gaarder's favourite magical realism style of writing in most of his works besides philosophy, he writes a story of a story seller in this book, which is as engaging as ever. As usual I've loved...more

“The Ringmaster’s Daughter” by Jostein Gaarder; 4/5

A whimsical novel about a man so overbrimming with ideas, conceits if you like, for novels that he has to unburden himself to other, lesser, authors to flesh them out. A number of these synopses appear in the text, including a couple of variations on the theme of the titular 'lost' circus ringmaster's daughter, and one on game of chess played with living pieces. Playful and entertaining as Gaarder usually is, however the ending seems to be more of a surprise to the protagonist than it should, gi...more

Hai Petter,
Aku membaca tentang dirimu dalam buku The Ringmaster's Daughter: Jostein Gaarder.

Prirodne nauke, likvona, književna, p...more

First off, a disclaimer: I'm a big fan of Jostein Gaarder. I've been enamored with his work ever since I've read the masterpiece that is Sophie's world, and I have been his constant reader ever since.

This novel stands out from Gaarder's opus. Usually his books have philosophical undertones, or philosophy is somehow strongly linked to the plot. They also include some delightful surprises, and are, in a way, didactic. If anything, they try to make the readers think about themselves and the world a...more

3.5 stars.

This book tells the story of a guy named Petter who has such an incredible imagination that writers would kill for. He can spout out three complete and elaborate plots in the span of an hour. However, Petter has no desire to be an author, but he is more than happy to sell his plots to those who are willing to pay a good price.

It was interesting to see the huge number of authors who succumbed in the face of an expertly woven plot that could be all their own for a certain price. As the...more

Awal na seperti membaca buku harian (yg ternyata mmg demikian), terasa membosankan.

Entah mengapa dongeng...more

Kisah Lelaki Penjual Imajinasi
(sumber: Sinar Harapan, Sabtu 12 Agustus 07)

Ia bisa mem...more

I read so many books by Jostein gaarder (or that is how it feels) which all gave me the same feeling that I expected all of his books to be like each other. Exactly the book I decided to read with others, is different.

The story about Petter, a storyteller, is les phylosophical than the other books. It tells about his life, the beginning of the stoy being where it also ends. He makes up amazing stories which I wish would be taken to write a complete book but as I was ready for another phylosophic...more

Unlike vain people, I had the ability to think this right through. I had no difficulty in picturing full theatres and cinemas long after myself was gone. Not everybody can do that. Many are so intoxicated with sensual impressions that they're not able to grasp that there is a world out there. And therefore they're not able to comprehend the opposite either - they don't understand that one day the world will end. We, however, are only a few missing heartbeats away from being divorced from humanity forever.” 3 people liked it
