I so LOVE this book. I picked it up from the library where it was on display. I normally haven't spent much time with poetry in my life, and haven't shared a lot with my kids. This book really changed that for us and now we're eager for more.
We've gone through the poems several times and spent a lot of time looking at the illustrations. I've assigned my kids to memorize a poem a week and they're REALLY enjoying it. I've found my 8-year-old immersed in this big book many times More...

This anthology give children a variety of poetry to pick from both older poems and current ones. This Big Book of Poetry is broken up into many themes such as Animals, World of Nature, Around the Year, People and Places, School Time, Me and My Feelings, Family and Home, Food for Me, Nonsense, and Mother Goose. I think children would love to read this book because it is easy to read and has a variety of things that are talked about in the book. This was one of my students favorite books to read d

Poetry
Anything by Bill Martin Jr. and illustrated by Eric Carle are a hit to me. The poems are grouped in themes which is great for teachers for when they're teaching a class a unit they can use this book to start each lesson with a poem to grab their attention. I'm not big on poetry but this book has helped sway me a little bit. Of course Eric Carle illustrating it is amazing too, really helps grab kids attention and bring the poems to life. Highly recommend!!

This big book of poems is a great book for young readers. There are many different poems categorized by seasons, animals, feelings, and many more. I read this book for an English assignment, and found my favorite poem was titled "Poor Substitute". The poem really made me laugh thinking about how true it is to school students whose teachers are away for the day. I thought this book had a lot of fun poems that were easy to read and enjoyable.

Compliation includes Around the Year, People and Places, School TIme, Animals, World of Nature, Me and My Feelings, Family and Home, Food for Me, Nonsense, Mother Goose. The artwork for some of the poems is very good, but some of the poetry, in my viewpoint, is not arresting or as eloquent as other selections might have been.

I used this book to find a poem for our themed set about family. It would be a really good resource for any teacher to have because it literally has poems on just about every subject. You could use the poems in this book for just about any lesson on any subject, so it would be very beneficial in a classroom.

A fun book of poetry, including classic poems as well as contemporary ones. The illustrations are bright and colorful. In some of the poems the rhyme feels forced, but I know this is by design to appeal to an audience of young children. Still, the collection is a bit inconsistent in terms of quality.

This book is a great compilation of poetry for young children with amazingly fun illustrations. Children would love having the poems read aloud to them and at the same time the poems are on a level where beginning readers can read them on their own. It is a great introduction to poetry for young children.

This is a cute book of poems with bright illustrations. It is divided into sections and each section is about different subjects like animals, city life and seasons of the year. Good book to have when you are doing a certain theme in your classroom. I read a few of these poems with my students and they loved them.

This was a nice combination of poetry of different styles, by different authors. I particularly liked learning more about Bill Martin Jr., though. He has an inspirational story about the power of poetry in helping a student learn to read.

A large variety of poems by differnt authors. Some authors are new and some are old, but the poems are fun especially for young children. I like the section on animals! Teacher could read this bookas an introduction to a poetry lesson.

Nearly 200 poems are gathered in this large anthology, created by Bill Martin, Jr. and Michael Sampson. Each poem is paired with an illustration from many of the best picture-book illustrators, creating a feast for the eyes, ears and heart. The poems include works by well-known poets, including Robert Frost, Christina Rossetti, Langston Hughes, Nikki Grimes, Aliki, and Jack Prelutsky. This is a wonderful treasure to explore as a family, to share old favorites and discover new ones.

I don't read much poetry, but when this one came through I thought the illustrations were beautiful. The kids are enjoying the poetry while we're in between chapter books.

rec. by Ann Voskamp. A very well chosen and illustrated volume with a good variety of poems. Illustrations are by many favorite children's illustrators and it is fun to look though at the different styles and identify which well-loved books they resemble.

What a fun new anthology-- reminds me of the old Random House collections. Large 8 1/2 by 11 format with big illustrations by well-known illustrators (not just Bill Martin Jr!)
