This is the cat version of what most parents of young children go through. Mother cat calls to Kitty Cat to ask if he is doing a specific task – waking up, getting dressed, cleaning himself, only to have Kitty Cat reply with an excuse why he isn’t doing it. This goes back and forth until the very last page when Kitty Cat apologizes for being so slow getting ready for school. The last picture you see is Mother Cat driving him to school.

Now that Harriet can read she is taking a more active role in choosing her library books. She is returning to old favorite authors, like Bill Martin Jr. A recent find of his is Kitty Cat, Kitty Cat, Are You Waking Up?

This book explores the morning routine of a young kitten as he gets ready for school. Parents and school aged children will recognize the speed bumps in the routine: it's hard to get up, it's hard to pick out the right outfit, food is more fun to play with than eat, and so forth.

Another winner from Bill Martin, Jr. Especially nice for girl toddlers. Kitty Cat is very expressive. Like "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?", it will be a favorite that you will memorize and read again and again. I am going to use it at my toddler storytime.

Bill Martin's simple repeating rhyming phrases work well in this cute story about a kitty cat getting ready for school. All parents know that their kiddys can be easily distracted and will relate to the amusements that catch this kitty's fancy.

My son, 3-year-old, thought that the Kitty Cat character was cute. He also liked the rhymes. But I felt that he was not totally engaged. Perhaps because we read this right before he was becoming drowsy enough to take a nap.

Fun story for readers who get to follow a kitty getting ready for his day. There is rhyming and opportunity for readers to participate in the story since there is some repitition.

Kitty Cat finds things to do to avoid getting ready for the day. Written in Bill Martin's typical Q&A style, kids will enjoy the repetition; adults will be quickly annoyed.

Actually, my cats say this to me every morning. "Mom, mom, are you waking up yet?" as they poke and prod at my face. But in this story mother cat keeps prompting her baby to get up, get dressed, and get ready for school. Baby cat, however, is a slowpoke and a bit of a procrastinator. Does Mom get impatient with him? No way! In fact, the picture of Mom hugging her baby toward the end is SO cute. The soft pastel pictures are the perfect accompaniment to this rhyming, repetitive story, a great read...more

The rhyme and repetition makes this a great book for the very young
Kitty Cat is distracted by many things as she gets ready for school in the morning.

Really sweet illustrations with a kitten whose mother keeps asking if he's waking up and getting ready for school. Fun read aloud book for very young toddlers.

Kitty's supposed to be getting ready for school. This book would be more fun if made interactive. Puppets? voices? an action the kids can do?
Kim
For all the kids out there that would rather play than get ready in the morning. Simply text and cute pictures, great for storytime.
Joy
A bit cloyingly sweet for my personal tastes, but the rhyming text and silly pictures were a big hit with my preschool storytime.
Kim
I like this one, but what do you do with "waking up" books? First of the morning isn't a great time to read to kids.
Kelley
What a cute story about getting ready in the morning. Preschool age fun for kids who take too long in the mornings.

Very good for storyhour.

This is a simple, delightful story about a mama cat trying her best to get kitty cat out of bed and to school on time. Kitty drags his paws all morning long, he's much too easily distracted to possibly do as he is told without procrastination. The repetitive text is good for use with toddlers on up to older preschool children. I'd use this with storytime.
Kate McCartney
Kitty cat is reluctant to get our of bed and start her day. Sweet rhymes made up with Mama cat prodding her progress and Kitty cat's delaying response makes for a very fun read with children. This would be very cute as a storytime book and a one-on-one. Many repeated phrases will make it fun for children to participate.
Lisa
I was expecting a repeat of Brown Bear, Panda Bear, Polar Bear, and Baby Bear. I was very impressed with this new addition. While the title suggests it is the same, it is a totally new book. Very good for story time.

Very cute book about a little cat waking up and getting ready for school. It has a nice, rhyming narrative and adorable illustrations. This would be a great book to read to a child who is about to start school.
