I love this book. The bear is based on Henry David Thoreau and his refusal to pay his taxes to a state that allows slavery.

A nice way to introduce Thoreau to children.

Like the play The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail: A Playl, Johnson distills out the clever thoughts of Thoreau from his prolix writing. And the art is distinctive. The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail: A Play

Another interesting children's book about Thoreau. I didn't like this one as much as the first one.

This was a surprise! I expected some cutesy story with jumbled looking pictures. I actually came to like the pictures and certainly did not expect slavery to be introduced at the very beginning! I spent most of the book trying to pick up on the symbolism that I'm sure was in there. Some I got, I think some I missed. But it all was completed for me when at the end I learned who the bear and his experiences were based off of.

Another book in D.B. Johnson's series about Henry David Thoreau (conveniently depicted as a bear in this series.) This story is about the jail time he served for not paying taxes, his protest against the laws that allowed slavery. Great story, very imaginative, fun illustrations.

I love reading this to my daughter because of lines like "I won't pay taxes to a state that lets farmers own slaves." I feel like I'm sowing the seeds for a future revolutionary. But, then again, she loves Fancy Nancy too, so maybe a revolutionary in a tiara.

This is a great book to use to teach students how they can use research in all types of writing. It would work well for teaching a research-based short story or picture book as part of a multi-genre research paper.
