I was pleasantly surprised by this collection of three short stories, all completely varied in their tone, telling, subject and era, but all based on the artwork by one artist (images included in book).

Peter S. Beagle is best known as the author of The Last Unicorn

The fact that poetry, good and mostly bad, atoning kings and jewish folklore make appearances in these tales made it a very satisfying read to me. More...

Another fantastic part of the "Strange-" series of chapbooks from Dreamhaven. I'd never read any Peter S. Beagle, either, and I enjoyed his writing quite a bit!

The first story felt very much like an old moral tale from the classic fairy tale authors from centuries ago. The second story was a hilarious modern ghost story that I would love to read aloud in a coffee shop sometime. Three short stories from Peter S. Beagle based upon the art of Lisa Snellings-Clark. (An artist friend of Neil Gaiman for those wondering how I found out about her.)

The first story, "King Pelles The Sure", was a little uneven, but the remaining two tales are very good with well-fleshed out characters that had me marveling at the efficiency of the short-story format. Very well done indeed.

I love short stories, and usually judge if I want to read more form an author based on a short story collection of that author. Strange Roads convinced me I need to read more of Peter S. Beagle. All three stories are imaginative and intriguing. All three seem to be about atonement in some way, but the sins and redemption vary wildly.

"Uncle Chaim..." is one of the best short stories I've read, it's sad, sweet, creepy and a little bit unholy. I loved it. If you can get your hands on this little short story chapbook, it's abundantly worth both the hunt and the price!

"Spook" made me giggle with glee.
