(Subgenre alert: This is not the sort of vampire book in which dishy goths sink delicate fangs into the protagonist's neck during hot sex. This is the sort of vampire book in which shark-toothed monsters rip apart fragile human bodies to get at the tasty tasty blood inside.)
(Sequel alert: Although the plot makes sense on its own, the characterization probably works best if you've read the two preceding books in the series, 13 bullets and 99 coffins.)

This tale introduces us to Jameson Arkeley, a U.S. Marshal and well-known vampire hunter, and Laura Caxton, a Pennsylvania state trooper and apparently a person of interest to vampires. The two meet when Caxton stops a car during a routine road check and find 3 corpses in the trunk. The driver escapes but Laura quickly realizes something is wrong. Arkeley is determined to wipe out any vampires still in existence. Caxton quickly becomes his protege, although their relationship is not very friendl...more
This is a cat-and-mouse duel between the best vampire hunter around, Jameson Arkeley, who, unfortunately, is now a vampire (a very smart and powerful one) and his protege, Laura Caxton. The challenge posed by the book is how can the student beat the teacher when the teacher taught her everything she knows?

The third book in Wellington's vampire trilogy was, like the second, not nearly as gory as the first. I'm OK w/ that. Every other chapter, I thought, "Wow, this is a bad situation, how could things possibly get worse?" Then I guessed, and my guesses were usually right on the money. I'm don't mean the book was overly predictable, but there's only so many ways to make the main character more and more isolated from any sort of sanity.

Laura Caxton has to put to use all that she learned from her mentor Jameson Arkeley, because her mentor has now turned into a vampire. In order to save Laura, Arkeley accepted the curse and now hse is hunting him as he strives to create his own little family of vampires. This time, the hunt may very well be the end of everything Laura holds dear.

Vampire Zero is another entertaining chapter in the life of state trooper Laura Caxton. She and Jameson Arkeley continue their relationship, which began and has been sustained by vampire activity. However, those who have read 99 Coffins know that relationship has changed drastically. Wellington's vampires are ruthless creatures, but they are also clever, conniving and able to work together with their “half deads” to carryout their nefarious plans. This book has plenty of bloodthirsty violence, b...more
I so badly wanted to give this 5 stars, but I just liked Jamison too much as a character. I know that the story is not 1st person POV, but I felt more connected to his character than any other. As dumb as it sounds, I felt that his character would have handle several situations much differently in his new mindset.

Wellington, as usual, thrusts the reader right into the thick of it, starting off with an exciting, tense action sequence and following through with his trademark relentlessness. This third installment puts heroine Laura Caxton through the wringer, both emotional and physical, and her ingenuity and mettle are tested throughout. The prose is taut and engrossing and as ever, Wellington keeps it fresh with tight plotting and excellent pacing. It's a satisfying conclusion to the initial trilogy, (a...more
Finally got my hands on the third installment of the series and boy was it a kicker. Not as 'suck you in and not let you go' as the first two were, but still a good read.
Caxton has to hunt down and kill her mentor, Jameson Arkley, using only the skills and tricks that the man himself taught her. At the same time Arkley seems to be setting himself up as the next Vampire Zero; offering members of his family a choice... take the vampire curse or die.

I'm a fan of the Vampire series by David Wellington and this was another solid entry. I will say that I wasn't a huge fan of the very end, but it sets things up very well for the next book in the series, so I'm willing to forgive.
That said, I really want to see more of an emotional development for Laura. I know that her personality is that of avoidance of emotion and throwing herself into her work, but after so long, and everything she's seen, it feels like she should have made a bit more progr...more

These books are entertaining but the writing style is overly simplistic. The stories are extremely repetitive and character developement isn't very strong. If you want an easy brainless but entertaining read these books are right for you--but if you want a thinking book then don't waste your time. I read them mid semester to give my brain a relief from thinking.
I did like how the vampires are absolute monsters though- none of that fluffy vampire love story crap

This is horror at it's best and it was a nonstop rollercoaster ride. Not as gruesome as the 1st book but there was plenty of action and suspense. Poor Laura Caxton has been promoted to Vampire Hunter. I think it drove her mad but she was very thorough. The ending was somewhat predictable but very much enjoyable. I can't wait to read the final book of the series
This series must be read in order as each book picks up just where the previous one ended.

My final "zero" book, this one is actually the 3rd book in a series about vampire hunter(s). It was a rather interesting tale about a girl who is hunting down her former mentor, who became a vampire to save her life (that story probably makes sense if you've read the first 2 books, but isn't actually explained in this one so I have no idea how becoming a vampire saved her life). I enjoyed reading this book, but not enough to go and find the first 2.

Wellington is great at keeping his characters consistent in each book. He is also great at creating and introducing new characters. these vampire books of his always give me the creeps. like i dont want to go out at night. that doesnt last too long but i do look around to make sure no one is around. This isnt as good as the first book but its not far behind it.. so far i will recommend this entire series.

Great book that adds more to the mythology that Wellington created in the first two vampire books. I love that Laura never becomes a super-bad-ass vampire killer, she's always a regular person struggling to keep people alive. She's like John McClane in Die Hard, fighting terrorists because he's the only one available. Laura would love for someone else to do this, but she's the only one with the experience.

Vampire Zero is the third book in Wellington's vampire/Laura Caxton series. For those familiar with epidemiology, you will recognize that the title is borrowed from the study of disease outbreaks. To stop the spread of an epidemic or pandemic you must find the first person to contract it, so you can figure out how it spread and the speed with which it spread.

Vampire zero is the third in David Wellingtons Vampire series (sorry, not sure if it has a name). A fun quick read and based on the subject matter (which I won't post as to not spoil the reading of the first two) makes it my favorite of the four. If modern day Van Helsings fighting super fast nosferatuish vamps is your thing you'll enjoy these.
Always excellent, damn fine vampire books, just excellent, caxton once again on the trail of the demonically strong and incredibly smart vampires. With Arkedly now feeling the effects of eternal life and the blood lust, he begins to build another vampire nest. Caxton is on his trail, and the confrontations are just great.
No more spoilers but this series needs to be a bloody, yeah very bloody film, five movies and counting..a real gore-fest.

Annoying little errors like repeatedly calling a beretta pistol a "baretta" pistol. Dude, that was a tv show back in the 70s with Robert Blake playing the main character indeed named "Baretta". Well maybe I just got a bad print, but still, quite annoying.
Apart from that it was ok, but not good enough that I would consider reading the fourth book.

Definitely a fun summer read, especially if you're from Pennsylvania, where the story takes place. It's fast, it's gruesome and it reminds you that vampires do NOT shimmer in the sunlight. I will have to go back and read the two books prior to this one, because there were some points that would have been better explained with more back story.
I thought this installment of the series upped the pace on the previous two... However I still find the Laura Caxton character hard to like for some reason... Her former boss and Vampire hunter has turned vampire himself and is proving to be a formidable adversary not least because he taught Laura all she knows about killing vampires...
Although you should be rooting for her to get the better of Arkerley you end up rooting more for him to win out and defeat her... Not sold on this series but not...more
