the english version of this book hasn’t come out yet. It comes out in november. as such, I offer no spoilers. i’m here to make three points:
1) the blood and guts
2) the disaster
3) the women
1) y’know that bookbuzz you get when you’re walking around the world and it’s all colored with the life of the book you’re reading? 894 pages of bolano’s epic and I felt like the guy in those 50s sci-fi movies who gets shrunk down real small and is injected into someone’s body. ex...more

This is a book that leaves one speechless for its brilliance. At 900 pages long, and quite grim in parts, though darkly funny always, I would have read it continuously, but for regular life commitments; even so I managed to read it in 3 days and it is just sad to arrive at the end, though I am sure I will return quite a few times to it; it demands one re-reading at least to appreciate its edifice - it is composed by 5 interlinked parts and it is sprawling and open-ended so little details I am ...more

I'm afraid to write about this book, a fear that emanates from the knowledge that attempting to describe a monolith almost always lessens its sublimity. Here is a brief, top-of-my-head summation. I finished it in a breathless rush last night (finally), and am confident when I say it's even better than my favorite book of last year, Bolano's amazing The Savage Detectives. Perhaps Pynchonian in length, but where Pynchon revels in overwhelming information strewn with clever asides, Bolano choose...more

from bolaño's death bed: an outsized and carefully constructed epic/mystery. i so deeply want his world to be my world that somehow 1100+ pages just didnt seem like enough. there certainly are a number of excruciating moments (the majority of them having to do with with an almost endless series of violent deaths on the us-mexico border) but as it gets closer to the end every sentence seems a revelation, and the mystery deepens as it is revealed.

How close can one tread to the abyss--in an act of desperate, imperative confrontation--without losing their mind, without being swallowed-up?
It's all a matter of boredom, really.

Well, I'm read the English translation, pubs in November.

I'll have to process my thoughts on this one for a few months before coming up with any definitive review (if such a thing were possible).

One of the great novels of 20th century. I'm reading it in Spanish; an advantage to get the mixes of various slangs and dictions

Four stars for the scope and brilliance - but I couldn't get into it. Felt like homework.

Definitely worth it. Looking forward to Bolano's poetry being released in English.
