This Is Halloween '12 Challenge #3
Victoria Holt is to Mary Stewart as saccharine is to sugar; fairly similar to the original, but not quite as good as the real thing- a little too sweet, a little too artificial. This is my first foray into Holt's gothic romances (interestingly, she apparently writes historical fiction as well under the name Jean Plaidy), and I was fairly impressed. On the Night of the Seventh Moon had the highest ratings on GR and I figured it would be a good place to start. I w...more

Gothic romance for the win XD!
Dunno, when I read this book, way back when (six years to be precise anyway) I was thrilled by the time period most of Victoria Holt's books took place in. Beautiful dresses and parties, eerie castle settings, English landscapes, etc, etc, etc.
I don't remember this book a whole lot. I just remember a story, a legend, a mystery, a love, and poor character development (especially on the hero, Maximillian, side). I also remember I was terrified for Helena's fate becaus...more

Bottom line: this is a fun hairdryer book. Don't expect too much of it, and you'll be pleased.
On the Night of the Seventh Moon tells the tale of Helena Trant, the daughter of an English man and a German woman, who grows up in Oxford in the late 1800s, listening to her mother’s tales of the dark German forest where she was educated. When Helena is fourteen, she, too, is sent to be educated at the same seminary on the edge of the forest.

I picked up an old copy of this book for $0.25 the other day when I dropped off some items at my local donation centre. The pages were yellowed and the writing small but the topic intrigued me. It's been many years since I last read Victoria Holt, an author known as "the supreme writer of the 'gothic' romance".
Mystery, suspense, mystical forests, dark foreboding castles, trickery and folklore legends together with interesting characters made this book a very good read.

It was charming and very interesting to read. Although the action and most interesting things happen toward the end of the book, I like it. I like especially at the beginning Victoria Holt's writing. It was detail-rich, but not boring. The only thing I didn't like and sometimes make me think twice if I wanted to continue reading was the recurrence of some phrases and passages in the text, like "I want to know what happened to me in those six days of my life" or "the Night of the Seventh Moon" or...more
This novel is old-school gothic romance at its best! I started reading Victoria Holt books in my teens. I got away from them for many years and was thrilled to find this in my tbr. The writing is as good as I remember and the book passes the test of time.
The setting is beautiful--the Black Forest area of Germany and the time period is 1860s. The characters are intriguing as is the mystery of what really happened to Helena Trant and her Maximilian during the three days they were together and imm...more

I had never read a Victoria Holt book, and since there are so many, I chose the one that seemed to receive the best reviews. It was a quick summer read, but certainly not the page turner others described. I found several editing errors too which also served to distract. The characters were weak and ill defined. Those who were key were subject to the same foreshadowing inferences several times over. Her chosen settings were ripe for rich description, but again, Holt failed to hit the mark, only a...more
I read this book when I was in high school .I enjoyed it so much .It was one of favourites.
about 6 months ago I thought of it but I couldn't remember anything other than there was a moon and 7 in the title and it happens somewhere in a forest in Germany.(it took me a while to find the book title , and author on goole) but i still could remember that I'd loved the story so I was after a copy and finally found it today .

I read nearly all of Victoria Holt's books, but this was by far my favorite. I still remember the excitement of the mystery and love story. I just recently ordered my own copy to read it again. Her books have clean romance they are a simplified version of the types of stories Jane Austin writes. They often have a lower class girl/governess who falls in love with someone out of her league. There is often a mystery of murder or kidnapping to go along with it. They are set in castles or on the moor...more

Recommends it for:
anyone who enjoys Gothic intrigue
I first read this book probably fifteen years ago. It has been my favorite Victoria Holt book ever since--and yes, I have read all 32 books she penned under that name. To tell anything about this would be to give too much away so I'll just say this: The romance was breathtaking; the action was, in a way, believable; and the intrigue was shocking. For those of you who need a basic description, here's what the back of the book says:

It's been ages since I devoured a Victoria Holt book - Probably late teens, early 20s. This book was just as I remembered her stories. A great easy read for those times when you don't want anything too challenging but has a bit of substance (I'm a sucker for a bit of historical fiction -- romantic or otherwise). I enjoyed this read. The characters were engaging (although I didn't like Frau Grauben very much) and the setting was interesting. Great for a rainy day, or those nights when you're real...more
This book can be looked at two ways, as a hundred pages too long and annoying because every scene, feeling, and situation gets repeated at least three times, or, as for a reader who likes to savor the experience and step fully into the world of the novel.
I was in between those two ideas - the last fourth lost me in too much repetition and waiting around for the heroine to realize what the reader already knew. It's not a happy novel, centering largely around adultery and women who kill themselve...more

I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read and had an interesting story line. Set in England and pre unification Germany, On the Night of the Seventh Moon tells the tale of a young woman and her mysterious encounter in the woods. The plot is faintly reminiscent of twilight, despite the fact that this book predates the series. It did have a few weaknesses, however. The plot feels exceptionally slow in some places and quite rushed in others.
It was better than I thought. It took me awhile to get used to the author's writing style. I was a little unsure about the book at first but it kept me guessing and trying to figure out what happened and what was really going on. I enjoyed and would read it again. There weren't any "bad" scenes in it, but it came to certain parts in the book that I thought something might happen, but nothing did. It was really clean.
This plot was a little hard for me. I just couldn't get over the idea that royalty in Germany had the right to "take" a woman if they thought she was beautiful and it was their right. I didn't like the fact that the heroine falls in love with a man who has previously slept with many woman and yet he's still the man of her dreams. I enjoyed the mystery, some parts were predictable but other parts took me by surprise. In the end I felt resolved about their relationship.
Aww yeah, 1970s Victoria Holt. This was the sort of thing I read with abandon in my impressionable late middle/early high school years, and is probably to blame for my deep lingering affection for anything gothic-tinged. This book has some issues--repetition of certain phrases and themes, and characters who are too stupid to live, mainly--but if you cut it some slack, it's thoroughly enjoyable.
I read these as a teenager and own a lot of them. They are mostly gothic mystery romances. The mystery still catches me up, but the romance is a little dramatic. That is the difference between being a young girl and a 30-something mom! Nothing explicit, but definitely some dramatic love at first sight romance. It's kind of funny to re-read things you read as a teen.
It has been a VERY long time since I've read any Victoria Holt books, but I remember that I loved getting them from the library and this one was no exception. She has a formula that works for a quick light read and I have yet to be disappointed by it. Don't expect to have your mind blown or challenged, but great read for by the pool or on the beach.
This is my favorite book of all time. I first read this book in high school for a class and have read it several times since. It is an old fashioned gothic romance that has a wonderful ending. I love Victoria Holt as an author and believe this book is by far her best. It includes some romance, some mystery, some sadness, some happiness . . .
This book may start off slow but it is truely worth it in the end. It's not till the end till you finally figure out about the truth about everything that has happened to Helena. I would even read this book twice, but of course I never will. No books twice!
If you are looking for a fun read, this is it.

I am a self-declared Victoria Holt addict. I have been since my early teens and read MISTRESS OF MELLON. I am generally not a fan of 'romance novels' but give me a gothic suspense any time. this was not one of my favorite by Ms Holt, but the setting in pre unified Germany the black forest was interesting along with her usual strong heroine.
