One of my all time favorites! I can't say Kasza's prose is remarkable or the illustrations are Caledcott material, but the plots are so memorable and engaging that each of her books has found an eternal spot on my favorites list.
Now don't get me wrong. The illustrations are great. Kasza's training in graphic arts comes shining through with the bold colors, clean layouts, and wonderful expressions on each animal's face.

The Wolf's Chicken Stew, written by Keiko Kasza, is on the NY Public Library 100 Picturebooks List. This is a story about a wolf who loves to eat more than anything else in the world. The wolf has a craving for chicken stew, and the reader follows along the wolf's journey of "fattening" up the chicken so that he can have more soup to eat. This was a funny and suspenseful story. There was a theme about "100", where the wolf would make 100 pancakes, and then 100 donuts, and...more

This is a cute story I saw read to a class today. The teacher used it to help students understand and remember the beginning, middle and end of a story. It is about a wolf who decides to delay eating a chicken in order to fatten her up and eat later. To do this, he makes pancakes and cakes and all sorts of goodies and sends them to the chicken. After a while he goes to the chicken's house who is glad to see him and tells all of the 100 baby chicks in the house that 'Uncle Wolf' is here. The chic...more

Wolf is always hungry. One day he finds himself craving chicken stew. He finds a chicken that will fill his pot very nicely but she's a little to thin for his tastes. He goes home and bakes a hundred pancakes and takes them to her door. The next day he takes 100 doughnuts. The following evening it's a towering cake. Then he decides to go check on her. She must be fattened up by now. However, when she opens the door, she is exactly the same size. Her many, many chicks, however, are quite well-fed...more
The medium of this book is water color with a wide color palette which the illustrator affectively used to demonstrate night and day and the progression of the story. When I first picked up this book I noticed the well executed use of medium and style by the illustrator. The books layout is portrait to capture the wolfs entire figure and actions, but some illustrations are full bleed across both pages to capture the landscape of the picture.
This is a book about a wolf that wants to was wanted to make chicken stew. The wolf looks at the chicken and thinks that the chicken is too skinny. He wants to fatten her up, so he starts leaving her all kinds of goodies so that the chicken will get fatter. This book has many events, so it could be used to teach children how to summarize the events of the story. It also teaches that if you are nice to others, you will make many friends.

There was a wolf who loved to eat. There was a chicken that he loked for his stew. He thouught that if he could get the chicken fat then there would be more meat for his stew. The wolf made his stew and got ready to kill the chicken, he realized she had chicks. He changed his mind and she in turn made him a nice meal.
This book is about a wolf that wants to eat a chicken. Before he wants to eat her, he wants to fatten her up. He sent her food at night to fatten her up. When the wolf comes to get the chicken, he realizes that he has been feeding her chicks too. They eventually become friends.
Cute story. A wolf decides he wants to make chicken stew, but the chicken he wants to eat needs to fatten up. So the wolf leaves lots of food on the chicken's doorstep, but finds out that the chicken's chicks ate all the food and love him for sharing.
This is a great book for the 100th day of school. Wolf really wants to make chicken stew, so he finds a chicken to fatten up. He bakes her 100 pancakes, 100 donuts, and a cake that weighs 100 pounds. Does he get his stew? Read and find out!!
This book is one of my childhood favorites. The wolf preys on a chicken but gets a big surprise in the end. This book can make a great math lesson and can also be used to teach children how important it is to get along with others.
Wolf liked to eat! Wolf wanted to eat chicken stew. He decided to fatten the chicken by feeding her. One day Wolf went to check on chicken and saw that he couldn't eat her because she had a family!! He became part of the family! Adorable!
Mr Wolf is hungry, and goes to ridiculous lengths to try and fatten up one particular chicken. Sadly, all his hard work is ruined by unforeseen circumstances, and he never gets his Chicken Stew. But he does get lots of chicks.
Kasza takes the evil wolf story and turns it on its head when a wolf discovers he likes cute chicks more than he wants to eat them. Useful story for showing kids that things don't always turn out as we expect.
Great story to use to challenge ideas about "the wolf" in children's stories. The wolf wants to fatten a chicken up for his chicken soup so he begins to feed her. Little does he know he is fattened up her babies.
My daughter decided this was a scary book so we had to take it out of her room. The story is not scary because it is about a wolf who likes to bake and ends up baking lots of treats for a chicken and her chicks.
I wasn't thrilled with this book initially. Thought it was cute, but the ending seemed a little hokey. I did it as a read aloud with a couple of preschool classes and they were spellbound. Who knew.
Funny story about a wolf who decides he wants chicken stew. He comes up with a plan to fatten up a chicken, but when he goes to get her he discovers a change and has a change of heart.
One of my very favorite books. Wolf is trying to fatten up the chicken for his dinner and instead becomes Uncle Wolf, a baker for the chicks. fun, fun
I simply loved this book!!! It is funny and cute at the same time. This author always has a twist that will get you laughing at the end.
The wolf tried to trick the chicken but ended up finding compassion. A great book with a twist for an ending. great read aloud.
Cute story that redeems the wolf, as opposed to most versions of "The Three Little Pigs." Fun story to read aloud.
An old favorite new to me! A twist on the hungry wolf-type stories... very cute and good for storytimes.
This was a very cute story and it was a lot of fun to read. It has a happy ending and it shows lots of love.
