Marjorie Bruce is the only daughter and sole heir of King Robert de Brus of Scotland. Which means she is a highly sought target of King Edward I of England, also known as "Longshanks," or as he refers to himself, "Hammer of the Scots." In 1306 Marjorie is still a child, only eleven years old, when her father is crowned king of Scotland, and so begins her life on the run from Edward Longshanks. Only a mere eight months after the coronation, Marjorie is captured and taken to La...more

At first glance this book looked stupid, but I decided to give it a try. The first few chapters were confusing, because it kept going from present to past but a couple chapters in to it I got it. The story's about a girl named Majore who is the daughter of Bruce the Earl. He becomes Bruce the King of Scotland and is a challenge to the King of England who claims to be the King of Scotland. Well Majore, who is now a princess, ends up captured and is put on display in a cage. What unravels after th...more

As a general rules, I dislike historical fiction. Most of it just seems bland and self-important to me, but I have lost count as to how many times I have read this book. I bought it 5 years ago at a school book sale and I have refused to pass it down to my little sisters' bookshelves. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for some good historical fiction.

So good I sat up half the night reading it. If you love this era of history (it is my favorite), this book has a great plot that other fiction books of the time don't cover. I loved the tug of war between the princess and the man holding her in the cage. How inspriring that she wouldn't sell out for anything. Great show of character.

This is an historical fiction for young readers. I have a high interest in European history, so it's quite engaging. At the end of the book, the author provides a section of historical accounts that tell "the rest of the story" not included in the novel. It's a good read for young readers.

this is a very interesting Historical fiction novel that gives a great telling of the war between the King of England and the King of Scottland during the 1300's, and what happens to the 11 year old princess of Scottland who is taken captive by the King of England.

There was a lot of courage in this book, but it was not particularly happy. I still liked it though. It was pretty intriguing. What people will do in war......

An interesting, informative historical fiction book dealing with Scotland/England 1306...all based on historical records - at the book, there is a section that discusses the factual information that was included in the story.

I think this was my first Jane Yolen book. It was an interesting take on this bit of history from the daughter's perspective - and good incentive to go find out what really happened.
