Book 1 of Kate Klimo’s Dragon Keepers series, The Dragon in the Sock Drawer, finds cousins Jesse and Daisy caring for and protecting their newly hatched dragon. Emmy, whose name is really Emerald, hatches out of an egg that Jesse thought was a geode, and she immediately begins to grow. In fact, she doubles her size every day. The kids tell Daisy’s dad, Joe, that Emmy is a green basilisk lizard from Costa Rica. Unfortunately, their lie lands them in trouble because Joe, thinking that someone has More...

This is the story of ten-year-old cousins Jesse and Daisy, who look every day for something magical to happen to them.

They find what they believe is a geode called a Thunder egg. The "Thunder egg," though, turns out to be a dragon egg - and thus begins the story of two young Dragon Keepers.

I thoroughly enjoyed THE DRAGON IN THE SOCK DRAWER from beginning to end. Jesse and Daisy lea More...

I just read this book out loud to my 7 year-old son, and I'm not sure which one of us enjoyed it more! The writing is enticing and the storyline one that hooks your attention. The elements of fantasy (the discovery and hatching of a dragon egg) are delightful, and the characters are real enough for kids to relate to. Although the book is fantasy, the story is well-crafted and believable. My son is a reluctant reader, and this book captured his imagination and we can't wait for the release of the More...

Quite a book, I must say! When I looked at the picture of Emmy on the cover I was rather interested, as I am a avid fantasy-book reader. Though the small dragon's appearance disappointed me a bit, (It is, in my mind, a rather stereo-typical looking dragon. I'd imagine a dragon much different, with it's mouth stretching not quite so far back into it's head, and body-to-head dimensions a little more correct. Emmy's ability to talk was not desirous for me, nor her speaking patterns.) but it is not More...

Jesse lives with his cousin Daisy. They are the best of friends and have a lot of fun exploring, reading books together, and trying to find magic everywhere they go. One day while on a hike, Jesse finds a "Thunder Egg" which is normally a geode. This is no ordinary geode though! Jesse and Daisy are amazed when a dragon hatches out of the Thunder Egg. Thus starts an amazing adventure as they try to take care of their dragon Emmy, while keeping her safe from harm. This is a great book fo More...

This is a delightful story that I think kids would really enjoy. I only have 2 minor criticisms. First, the first few pages were not very engaging. The sentences, though not short, had a "See Dick run" feel to them. The second criticism is probably just me being weird, but I didn't like the fact that the evil, dragon blood drinking villian was named St. George. I guess if the dragons are good guys, then having St. George be evil kind of makes sense, but it also made me uncomfortabl More...

Little Miss is obsessed with this story, repeatedly checking out the audio book, listening every night, calling herself by the main character's name (Jesse not Daisy), and carrying around- talking to and about- a small plastic dragon she calls Emmy.

It is a really cute story, at a young reader's level, with fun characters and a very cute dragon.

Content Note: It might bother some, although it doesn't me, that the villain in the story is St. George, the Dragon More...

This is a delightful adventure for young readers. It's perfect for the child who's done with "Magic Tree House" but isn't quite ready yet for older kids' fare like "Harry Potter" or "Percy Jackson." The dragon of the title is adorable and funny and kids will want one of their own after reading this. I think I might have to check out the next book in this series just to see what happens next. As an addendum, I do find it strange that a saint is the villain of the sto

Jesse gets more that he bargained for when he finds a thunder egg on the mountain. Usually, thunder eggs contain beautiful crystals. But Jesse’s thunder egg is different. For one thing, it talks. It also refuses (three saw blades sacrifice themselves) to be cut open. What Jesse’s really found is a dragon egg. When it hatches, he and his cousin Daisy do their best to care their new friend Emmy (short for Emerald) and protect her from the evil St. George.

What I thought: A fantastic sto More...

I read this with my 7-yr old. I picked it because it was an award winner for near his age group, it was relatively short, and it's about dragons! He loved it, of course. But it was pretty lack-luster for me. I thought the writing was only so-so, and one of the main characters, Emmy, was so incredibly annoying - you just don't care about her well-being at all. But good for the kids, I'd say.

I randomly picked up this book for my 3rd grade son to read this summer. He really enjoyed it so I (half-jokingly) said I would read it too. I just finished it today, and I'll have to say I thought it was a cute book! I really like that the author finds a way to explain the definition of big words to the reader, in a fun way. Cute story. I think we'll both read #2! :)

So, I actually have kinda read this book. If by read you mean listened to it over and over, out of order, and while I'm actually trying to read my own book.

My four year old daughter is obsessed with this story, repeatedly checking out the audio book, listening every night, calling herself by the main character's name (Jesse not Daisy), and carrying around- talking to and about- a small plastic dragon she calls Emmy.

He he he. I should give it five stars just for that.

Grade 3 - 5. Good plot, well written, good pacing, exciting and adventurous. My son will love it. (Girls will probably like it too.) Sort of a fantasy set in reality. Easy read but not a "baby book". Some interesting vocabulary is introduced. I was disappointed with the ending but I don't imagine many children will get hung up on that.

I don't usually write negative reviews, but this book was so awful that I had to force myself to finish it. The dragon sounds like a reject from a Land Before Time movie, and the children are just too pwecious. I don't understand how this got to be a Virginia Readers' Choice candidate. Thank goodness I only bought 1 copy for my library.

Very cute story for first time author. It has a fast pace for reading to children so much that the don't want you to stop reading as they are hanging on to each word and wanting to know what happens next. Next time the kids see a sheepdog it may be a dragon in disguise; have to read to find out the meaning.

We listened to this one as an audiobook in the car on a trip. LORD BLESS audiobooks! Anyway, on audio, this was easy to understand and lent itself to an audio telling. Maybe about 3 hours long? The kids are 5 and 10 and enjoyed it. That was what mattered. Adults are not the target audience.

I read this to my children, who are ages 11 and 6. They LOVED it, and so did I. It was a great read-aloud. I was delighted by how engaged my kids were with this story. I wasn't aware that it is book one of a series and am excited to find the second book the next time we go to the library.

A magical fantasy in a modern-day world. While hiking with his cousin, a young boy finds an egg that hatches a dragon. The children find themselves amidst danger, confusion and disbelief, as they scramble to protect the creature and fulfill its destiny. Great book for readers aged 7-9.

This was my latest bedtime read-aloud with the girls. They all loved it -- a cute story about two cousins who find a dragon egg and then they become "Dragon Keepers" and have to figure out how to take care of the dragon.

This book about Emmy and her keepers is sweet and enchanting. The children's misadventures as they learn how to care for their baby dragon "in real time" makes for great reading. Emmy the dragon is cute and funny.

The kids loved it, but they're not picky. Strange that they were introduced to St. George as a villain before they knew him as a hero. They were a bit confused when I read them the story of St. George and the Dragon.

This is, as you might guess, about two kids, who have so far filed to find a closet door that leads to Narnia, but do find a "thunder egg" which proves to be a dragon egg.

(Genre:young children's fiction/fantasy) My 10 year old son really wanted me to read this book that he received as a gift last year. It was a cute read for young children (probably age 7-9) and I think my 6 year old will love it. It is about a young boy named Jesse that finds a "thunder egg" or geode that actually hatches out a baby dragon. He names her Emerald or Emmy for short. While Jesse and his cousin Daisy try to take care of Emmy and keep her safe, the evil St. George is lurking More...
