Her poetic language was consistent throughout; present in the vignettes as well as the longer stories. I think the vignettes benefited from being in the collection. As stand alone pieces many of them didn't work well for me. They were strong on voice and with evocative language, but I wanted something more—the surprise of a poem or the conflict of a story—something more than a page or two of voice (a character speaking). Including them in the collection, however, creates a chorus of voices. ...more

you know, at the time she was (like) my favorite writer and this was (like) my favorite book. i don't know that i would still agree, but i'm going to leave that untouched in the past because her writing has had such an indelible (and simple) effect on me as a writer and story teller, it deserves that much. the strength and courage and yet disillusionment of the narrator resonated with me. of course, my own life was bit more situationally dramatic then, so that may (just may) have had somethi...more

This book is absolutely magical. There are perhaps only two or three short stories that did not grip me, but otherwise I have read all the others it at least four times. I think Cisneros truly found her voice here - poetic, hypnotic, erotic storytelling with multi-cultural and feminist undertones. I truly envy her gift for writing in this collection.

Sandra Cisneros is from the San Antonio area. I thought a few of the stories were really stirring and sad. Woman Hollering Creek was good and made me think about how easily someone can become cut off from society and how difficult that is when you really need help. Some of the other ones were funny and crazy.

Whoops, had the wrong edition before.

I read this in my American Ethnic Literature class. I'm not sure if we read it all, or just selections. I didn't really get into these stories. The one that stands out to me was the one that was letters that were prayers. I thought the format of that one was unique.

I actualy lived in the town where Sandra Cisneros was living when she wrote some of these short stories.

In fact I've driven over Woman Hollering Creek, it's on the way to San Antonio along I-10.

Great stories. My favorite would have to be Woman Hollering Creek.

Love her work!

Cisneros has an amazing way with words. Some of her turns of phrase are gorgeous and you just want to read them over and over again. Sometimes the story gets lost because you're so immersed in the language but there are worse flaws

i've read only the first 2 (?) chapters of this, and it's not due for another month or so, but it's pretty good so far. i missed the seventh-grade cisneros quota, so this is my first exposure to her writing, and i'm liking it.

A very good collection of short stories about the border culture between the United States and Mexico. Woman Hollering Creek is my favorite story. Full of rich symbolism. I think this would be a great read for young adults.

Cisneros is a brilliant writer. This collection of short pieces is one of my favorites by her. This is amazingly emotive prose combined with beautiful story telling. This is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Cisneros was one of my first introductions to language used in this lyrical way. I fell in love with Cisneros, particarly "BBQ" and "Ten," from her House on Mango Street.

I would love to have S. Cisneros as a writing professor. Her stories are fierce, heart-breaking, funny, and sad, AND sometimes all at the same time. Quite a feat.

I love Sandra Cisneros' characters. The Mexican women/families in her books vary from the tragic to humorous and every where else in between. Always a great read

I read this collection of short stories during my women in literature class in college. Each story offers an amazing tale. Every woman (and man) should read this.

Many short stories, all about women. Some were at best entertaining, others moving. Great book if you love short stories, and chican@ or women literature.

Another beautiful collection of short stories, this time about a number of different women of all different ages. "One Holy Night" was really striking.
