This building on the family farm is where her grandmother did her lessons and hidden there she finds her grandmother Elizabeth's diary.

Not exactly a time travel (for some reason that had been the reason I hunted it down) and since the heroine is only 12, it isn't really a coming of age story either. Basically, the heroine's family moves to a remote home in the bush of Australia and the heroine is sulky and ill adjusted until she finds her grandmother's diary, which helps her a) realize that her problems are universal, b) learn to love her new home, and c) use her grandmother's secret hiding place as refuge from a dangerous situ ...more
