Have you ever been sitting somewhere, life moving all around you, and in that moment you are completely aware? You can see the pieces of who you were yesterday falling to the ground as today begins to fill in the holes and all you can manage to do is sit there and watch it dissolve. Whoa.

I'm not sure where this author came from, but look out! Her characters are in your FACE--funny and scary--with an emotional swirl in the background that makes it hard to breathe.

The premise, which is almost beside the point, is that Matthew King's wife is in a coma. And he has to rise up to the occasion, and be a parent in a way he never was before. You realize, along with him, that these wild, angry girls never really had a parent of any kind.

This family melodrama set on Hawaii is an impressively brave, charming and intelligent novel. The themes that it sets out to tackle are tough, no doubt about it - dying, parenting, adolescence, infidelity - yet it handles them with irrepressible warmth, humour and dignity without ever seeming fake or cliched.

This book felt like i read a memoir of someone's life. The book is from Mr. King's point of view as I (the reader) took a journey with him in his life while his wife (in a coma) was in the hospital. Mr. King is a likeable character but his parenting, however, is questionable to say the least. What came out of his daughters' mouth were jaw-opening and not acceptable for their age. Naturally, I didn’t watch this movie at the theaters or on DVD. I came across this book while searching on overdrive.com for a book. I am reviewing another book, Tiger Baby Strikes Back by Kim Wong Keltner, and wanted to read the book Kim writes in reference to: Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua. When The Descendants popped up on my screen, I read the synopsis and was actually intrigued by the storyline.

I have to admit, the story quickly drew me in. Told through Matt’s point of view, I was able to experience his journey of stepping up in his role of father, coming to terms with the imminent death of his wife, and accepting choices his family makes. It was really challenging to like Matt’s character. As a lawyer and wealthy descendant of a Princess, he seemed quite weak, very passive, aloof (hmmmm…sounds like an actor I also associate that word with), who was just too difficult to like or feel sorry for.

Because of his lack of assertiveness and willingness to look the other way with his wife’s infidelity and the choices both his daughters made, I was surprised he was an attorney. I assume that as an attorney, he will want to know everything about his family, be more focused, and not so aloof. It seemed that before the accident, he really was an absentee father and husband. Faced with the impending decision to take his wife off of life support, he begins to visit all their friends to let them know Joanie is dying and if they want to, to go by and visit and pay their respects.

I did like the fact that the story is set on one of the islands of Hawaii. I’ve been there and it’s absolutely gorgeous and I could just live there and be so content. But, this book shows that even on the prettiest islands, some of the saddest and hardest things happen to everyday people. Also, there were a few moments I laughed, but for the most part, I really just didn’t care for the character of Matt. Because of his lack of involvement with his family, his daughter is sent to boarding school, his young daughter copies a friend-Reina, and his wife tries to get his lover a huge money making deal that indirectly involves Matt. In the end, Matt does find closure, steps up to the plate as a father, and the 3 of them become the family they all wanted to be.

So, I’m thinking this may be one of those exceptions where the movie is better than the book?? I haven’t seen the movie, but I’m curious to see how it is interpreted on screen!

The descendants have to sell it for two reasons: need of money and, after all, they weren't doing anything with the land. He has the biggest say, so it's a lot of pressure, worsened by the coma of his wife, caused by a boat accident. Despite all these problems, he also has to deal with his two problematic daughters. The youngest is Scottie, a ten-year-old girl that lies a lot and has a really nasty, unbearable friend. The other daughter is 18-year-old Alex; she used to be a drug addict, reason why in the beginning of the story she was in a boarding school. Now Matt is in charge and he's rather lost with this. Then, he discovers his wife was cheating on him, which confuses him: he is sad and mad at his wife, but he doesn't want to feel like this, he wants to make her happy in her final days. When the doctor says his wife (which by the way is called Joanie) will not wake up, he starts visiting their closest friends and family to let them know and invite them to give their goodbyes. Also, he finds himself in a dilemma: should he tell the man Joanie was seeing that his lover was going to die? Was that what Joanie would want, the lover instead of the husband? Well, these are the main points of the novel, from where the story is going to develop.

The book is now one of my favorites. You cheer for the characters, you laugh with them, you get confused with them. They come to life, there's a connexion. For example, when Matt asks a couple of friends if they knew about the cheating, if they knew who was the man, the woman blames him, saying that Joanie was right, that Matt wasn't good with her, and I got so mad at this. I mean, he never thought something was wrong, he thought she liked the way things were, he loved her. I took Matt's side, and if you take a character's side it's because the book is really good, right? Another example of how good the book is: once I almost lost the bus stop I was supposed to get down because I was paying so much attention to the reading.

The only two things that in some parts of the reading bugged me a little bit were: I couldn't believe that a 10-year-old could be like Scottie, so smart, cunning, and sometime even malicious, and I don't know what else that made me have to remind myself that she was ten, not thirteen; and second thing is, I couldn't believe that a father would concern so little about having a drug-addict daughter, would pay so little attention to this. Well, by the end of the book, these problems I had were solved, partly because I realised my point of view was wrong, partly because the story made me believe they could be real people. With Scottie, for example, how hard would it be to have your mother in a coma and a sister that gets drunk and does drugs? And about Matt, you see how he feels he failed his wife, his daughters...

There's one more character that I should mention: Sid, Alex's friend. Well, at least that's what they say they are, just friends. Alex claims that she would be more "civil" with him around, but it turns out that it's more than that, Sid has also a personal dilemma. A charming, fun character.

Something that really surprised me was seeing that this book is not very popular, at least here in Brazil, which is a shame, because it's a really good and worth-reading story. I didn't even know that that film was based on a novel.

The Descendants is a really good book. You are delighted to see the development of the characters and how the author treats such serious issues in a light and sometimes even fun way. You'll be surprised with the course of this homogeneous story.(less)

It's impossible for me to evaluate this book independent of the movie. The reason why I read this book is because I loved the movie. I'm always annoyed by people who feel that books are in some epic battle against movies to win the hearts and minds of pseudo-intellectuals everywhere. I like comparing movies based on a book because a movie is essentially an edit of a book. (But I digress again...)
What I love about the movie is that the George Clooney character, Matt King is a great character, as is his daughters, 10-year-old Scotty and older teenager Alex. Sid, Alex's sort-of boyfriend is a great character too. The movie didn't invent them - they're great characters in the book too. It's first person in the voice of Matt. The movie's decision to let Clooney do lots of voice over makes a lot of sense, because that's essentially what his first-person narrative does.
The movie is about 2 hours long. The book in audio form is 9. With the seven extra hours you get more time with Scotty in the beginning - a disturbing scene where she hurts herself so she can concoct a crazy story to tell her comatose mother.
You learn a lot of backstory about the mother. She's a strong character too, and she becomes a well-rounded person even though everything has to be told in terms of the past.
The book has a few false steps - the Esther housemaid character is a mistake, and the movie was wise to omit her. Sid has a bigger role in the book, and doesn't go away when the mother dies. We get his backstory, but it's not particularly interesting. He becomes the instigator of a major plot point (I won't give it away, but it's not that important, not really). I think Sid's action is a mistake by the author, and the movie corrects the mistake.
The screenwriters took a good book with great characters and a tight plot and made it better. Should you read the book? Sure, why not. The author creates some nice novel-y bits, such as when Matt confronts Brian, his wife's lover. But most importantly, you'll be able to show off to your friends about the differences between the book and the movie, and isn't that cool? You'll read a well-written book that keeps the actin tight and doesn't overreach. You'll also better appreciate the movie.(less)

I actually saw the movie before I read this book, and that's OK because the movie did a pretty darn good job of capturing the feeling and characters in this book.

What can I possibly say about this book except that it was phenomenal? I enjoyed it immensely. It was so well-written. It was witty and profound. Having the desire to read the source material for what was my favorite movie from 2011, I picked up The Descendants and began reading. One of my first impressions, and one that lasted with me throughout the book, was how amazingly close the Oscar-winning screenplay was to the book. Shockingly close. I wanted to like this book. It takes place in a beautiful setting, the story is interesting but I just couldn't get my arms around it.

There were a ton of Hawaiian words in it. I thought I would be okay with this because I have family from Hawaii and my knowledge of the language is probably better than most, but I struggled with this book.

This is a hard book to read, and ironically it's because the language is so easy. Matt King, the protagonist, isn't trying to impress you with his intelligence or make beautiful words. I'm not sure if I would have appreciated The Descendants as much if I wasn't able to place George Clooney in the lead role. Perhaps I would have conjured a different image of Matt King, and it would have completely changed my perception of the novel. I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I wasn't sure what to expect, and had only seen commercials for the movie, but I was immediately drawn into the story. I felt for all the characters, especially Scottie and Alex. Hemmings did a great job making you see things from the eyes of these kids - and the view points were so different and so sharp, she didn't try to do a generic 10-year-old voice or a generic 18-year-old voice and I liked that. Three-fourths of the way through this book, I would only have given it 2 stars. I have been an elementary teacher, and I find the 10-yr.-old's language beyond the pale and unbelievable. I think this book would have been better told from the older daughter, Alex's, point of view, which to me, was more intriguing. I didn't find Matt's voice to be entirely convincing as male; he sounded like a woman at times.
