In a fantasy world as rich and real as our own, Richard Rahl and Kahlan Amnell stand against the ancient forces which besiege the New World - forces so terrible that when last they threatened, they could only be withstood by sealing off the Old World from whence they came. Now the barrier has been breached, and the New World is again beset by their evil power. War, monster...more

Terry Goodkind, Blood of the Fold (Tor, 1996)

Back when I was a kid, I was crazy about the various exploits of Donald Sobol's pint-sized sleuth Encyclopedia Brown. There was rarely a week where I didn't have at least one Encyclopedia Brown book out of at least one library somewhere near wherever I was living at the time. A fine set of books, those. Each was a collection of various mini-mysteries solved by Brown (and, later, his gorgeous sidekick Sally Kimball; after all, every sleuth ne...more

Since overcoming the nausea I had succumbed to over the romance between
Richard and Kahlan (it took a few years, no antibiotics were required),
I decided to take another step in the series. Like I've said in other
reviews for these books, this isn't such a huge commitment as these haven't been the types of books that hold you hostage to the series by ending with cliffhangers.

Blood of the Fold was OK. I really like the way Goodkind uses magic in
these stories, and ...more

I really liked this installment in the Sword of Truth series. Usually the third book is not the best but this one was better than the second I thought; more action, and plot and seemed to move more quickly. Even though Richard and Kahlan are separated through most of the book, there is enough action to keep it going and finally you feel like the Sisters of the Dark and even some of the Light get their commupance! The climax is very riveting and keeps you griping the edge of your seat----or pa...more

This installment is by far better than its predecessors. As with most things, Goodkind's writing is getting better and his ability to create an atmosphere and story that sucks you right in stays unblemished.

Regretfully the start of the novel is again slow. This has a lot to do with the needed repetition when you have a series containing of several novels. The reader doesn't always have the luxury of reading them one after the other, like I am doing. So, in my case, it's a burden I'l...more

This book is as good as the first in the series. There are a ton of really cool concepts and magical things that Goodkind throws at you in this book, and he does a really good job with them. This book basically consists of Richard and Kahlan's attempts to force the Midlands into a massive alliance against the Imperial Order.

One of Goodkind's better villains, General Tobias Brogan of the titular Blood of the Fold also makes his appearance in this book. This character is amazingly w...more

Book 3:

better plotting - actually foreshadowed to next book. The ending was pretty climactic and not totally obvious fairly exciting and page turning. Still kind of annoying at times. Cloying and overboard on emotions. Characters are either invincible or stupid depending on author whims. Wizard rules are retarded!!!!!!

Series: 5/10

The Sword of Truth series usually gets mentioned in the same breath as George R. R. Martin and Robert Jordan. Since I like those two authors, I decided to try th...more

This review refers to the SOT series through book 9.

Terry Goodkind’s first book Wizard’s First Rule was great! Except for the actual First Rule ("People are Stupid"), which was...stupid. The story had so many unique and fascinating characters (especially the secondary ones). I was in love with Richard; I wanted to be a Mord-Sith. The next couple of books of The Sword of Truth were pretty good, too.

Then...I don’t know what happened...it just TOTALLY lost it. The ...more

This was definitely a much better read than the second book in the series! The plot was much more compelling, and the various elements of foreshadowing much more cleverly placed, making this a fantastic read.

I guess this is one of those love-it-or-hate-it type of books. Admittedly, amongst all the flawed writing and unbelievable coincidences, I am a sucker for Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. If you didn't like the first two books in the series, I have no idea why you would want to co...more

So far, this has been my favorite of the Sword of Truth books. There are three major reasons why I loved this so much.

1. Even though this story rooted in fantasy, there is deep, DEEP, commentary on today's society. In this particular book, commentary was often set upon today's parenting and children. On page 72, "The young are lazy nowadays. So they sit and wait, to be given, to be taken care of, instead of seeing to their own needs." Then again on page 225, "Morality ...more

After escaping from the Palace of the Prophets and sending his father's spirit back to the realm of the Keeper, Richard Cypher is in semi hiding. Seeking shelter in the Aydindril he is set upon immediately by Mriswith, scaly caped creatures that have the ability to become invisible. Only Richard and his friend Gratch can find them. They make easy work of them. That is not the only threat. The Blood of the Fold has entered and they wish to kill anyone who has the gift of magick. Tobias their gene...more

And again I say:
I liked the idea of the story. The idea behind the plot is good, but it is lost in the telling and it just dragged on and on and on and on and on and on... you get the picture.

After five chapters of this I finally gave up and found the novel in MP3 so I could listen to it and just get it over with. I listened to the book while at work, and while listening to it I only had to devote half a brain to it. I got the important parts and anything I didn't find importa...more

Ok-you got me. I said Terry Goodkind is a pervert and I would not read any more of his books. Something compelled me, tugged in the back of my mind for months, to read one more book and am so GLAD that I did!
First of all, Terry is still a pervert. He is obsessed with extreme violence against women, taking pleasure in torture, and horrific rape. I suppose if he wants to unveil how ugly people can be, and is trying for shock and awe-he is a master. Though he didn't magically drop those t...more

Terry Goodkind is a superb author, and in my opinion, his "Sword of Truth" series is the best I have ever read. So good, in fact, that I have read the entire series three times in a row, back to back, non-stop. This series is *not* for children. The series covers many aspects of the dark side of humanity, in great detail, as the heroes try to overcome the evils in the world. Goodkind is not afraid to show his readers just what evil *really* is, that is, most often, people who perform...more

Though there are times in Wizard's First Rule and especially in Stone of Tears where Terry Goodkind really does truly terrify me, this book was actually really well written without the aspect of extreme violence prominent in its predecessors.

One of my favorite aspects is that Richard is wising up. He is learning not to be as stubborn and foolhardy as he was. Kahlan isn't crying or being depressed in every scene and Zedd has even more witty lines.

The Blood of the Fold are s...more

I've been trying to figure out why I keep reading these books even though I end up giving them bad-to-mediocre reviews.

I think I've got it: I like the story, but I just wish the writing itself were better.

So kudos to Terry Goodkind for thinking up the story, but please please tighten up the characters, tone down the everything-is-epic tone, and work a little more variety into your descriptors and scenes. After three books, I feel like I've seen all the characters' reactio...more

This was Book 3 of Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series, continuing with Richard and Kahlan's 'adventures' in a quest to save the world from being taken over by the Keeper.

What I found unique about all 3 books till now is the variety of characters one comes across in each book! I mean, there are whole new species you get to meet. In a way, it's good - it keeps the whole thing interesting. But sometimes it gets a bit overwhelming to adapt to yet another new villain or friend.

This book either needs to be either twice as long or half as long. Goodkind builds with this whole long seeming intro that sets everything up for about 95% of the book then the action the actual battle takes about 5% of the book. Either make the book a short fun page turner and speed up the set up (cutting the book nearly in half) or continue the length and make the follow through epic (doubling the length of the book). It kinda feels like the author planned this epic tale then near the end his ...more

I read the first book because I enjoyed Legend of the Seeker and was sad to see it off-air just when I was discovering it. I had hoped that by reading the books I could keep Richard and Kahlan's adventure alive.
I noticed the many, many differences right away, and tried to ignore all the violence. I almost gave up when DRl was preparing to go to Underworld because what good person would think of such a method to get anywhere? I shudder. But I chose to ignore it and finished the book.

3.0 stars. Another solid installment of this epic fantasy series and the last of the truly good entries (apart from Faith of the Fallen). Richard and Kahlan are great characters and there are moments a real fun someone muted by the less then stellar prose.

Frustrating and fascinating. That's how Richard presents himself to me. Frustrating in his complete inability to accept things first, and at face value. Fascinating in his connection with people, animals, the magic around him and the past.

For me, that's the mark of a good book. I'm becoming so attached to these characters that I quite literally got chills at one point, towards the climax at the end. I was also sorely disappointed to realize that, once again, the characters are all of...more

This is the third book in the expansive series entitled "The Sword of Truth". We find Richard is coming to accept the magic that runs in his veins. He is finally more comfortable with the Sword of Truth at his side and with his instinctive magic. It's nice not hearing him complain every 100 pages about how much he doesn't like magic. In fact, he is beginning to accept it as a diversifying element across the continent. With the Imperial Order looming at large it is difficult to take thi...more

This is where the series really starts to lose it's steam. Probably one of the most forgettable books in the entire series, there is nothing that happens in this book that isn't amply covered by simply reading the interminable flash backs in later books. It is obvious here that once Goodkind wasn't sure what to do with the series at this point, and this book is mostly filler. The mystery that pervaded the other novels, which kept pushing you forward to find out just what the heck was going on, i...more
