She was the mysterious woman in the long black cloak. He was the sexy guy next door. They shared a common wall between their Capitol Hill townhouses and not much else ... until disaster scored a direct hit on the mystery woman's bedroom and the sexy guy's heart. He baked her a cake, she learned to throw a football, there were some misunderstandings in the living room, some

This was another one-day read, when I had too many other things I should have been doing instead. I am very fond of Janet Evanovich’s books, which is one of the few things that JoanEllen & I disagree on. It is light reading, but always fun. This one is not part of the Stephanie Plum series; instead, it is a standalone novel about a too-tight lady cello player, Katherine Finn, who meets the lazy bum living in the next house when an object falls out of the sky and crashes through her roof, and ...more

Because it was there and I needed a laugh. :)

The sugary sweet story of a woman with the “soul of a birthday cake living in a bran muffin house” who falls for a man with the “soul of a bran muffin living in a birthday cake house” has about as much substance as a Krispy Krème doughnut. The story is simple: Girl meets boy, girl and boy fall in love and ridiculous neuroticisms and eccentricities keep boy and girl apart. Female protagonist Katherine Finn is supposed to be endearing with her wild mane of red hair and chronic fear of commitment; ...more

This was a cute story. The narrator is terrific (She also does the Stephanie Plum books)

You can definitely see foreshadowing of the Stephanie Plum series in Back to the Bedroom, which was published in 1989. This is more of a romance-y story with the focus being on the budding relationship between Kate Finn and her neighbor, David Dodd. However it's the slapstick comedic mishaps that keep happening that move the story along and remind the reader of situations that Stephanie Plum regular...more

I listened to this on audio. I really love Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. I love her humor and her character development. You could see glimpses of her fun characters in Elsie, but it isn't developed. I think this is just the beginning when she is just stretching her wings to see what she is capable of. She has a clever storyline here with a woman who is type A personality who falls in love with a man who doesn't work and has money and she has to come to terms with the fact that he isn'...more

Part of a helicopter fell through her roof, making her week complete. Hearing the crash, David Dodd made his way to his neighbors house only to find that Katherine Finn knew less about it than he did. Busy person was an understatement, Kate was constantly running from lessons, to rehearsal to performances, so Dave took control of covering and repairing the roof, but he also took her to his house when things seemed to get dangerous. Men in the yard, men on the roof, even Kate’s new roommates (...more

Pretty sure I heard about this book - part of a series of short screwball comedy romances recently re-released as ebooks - from the Smart Bitches. And I was thrilled to see that my library has at least this one as an ebook. Because library ebooks are made of win.

Anyway. I enjoyed this little book, which is more novella length than novel-length. David Dodd, the lottery winning slightly slobby next door neighbour is utterly charming. Kate Finn, tightly wound perfectionist cellist, is al...more

This book should have been titled, "Back to the Drawing Board". This should have been remastered with the addition of a real plot! I happened to pick this up because someone had kindly (or not) left it in our rental unit and I was bored and decided to see what all of the Janet Evonovich fuss was about (I see lots of ladies in the airport reading these books and laughing hysterically). Clearly, those ladies were not reading THIS book. Within the first page the book could have been f...more

This book probably deserves more than two stars. It is a really good and clean mystery/romance. Not violent or sexy but what happened with this book is predictable. I read one of her books and loved it! Read another style of hers and loved it. This book was a mixture of the two. If this is the only book by her that you read, you will love it. If you have read others, you will see what happens with most authors. You love their humor and style and so does everyone else. They know what sel...more

Back to the Bedroom was loaned to me by a friend. It was my first Janet Evanovich experience. I have been wanting to read a novel by Ms. Evanovich for some time now. I have heard so many good things about the Plum Series and I really do look forward to reading one of those soon. Back to the Bedroom is a romance novel, I am not a huge fan of romance novels and a part of me wanted to put the book down within the first few pages. However, Janet Evanovich is definitely a good author because althou...more

If this were any longer I would've only given it 2 stars for the heroines flip-flopping, I love you and want to marry you ... oh wait, maybe not ... oh no, definitely want ... hmmm, but we can't .... Arrrggh!!! Make up your freaking mind!!! Thankfully, since it was short it stayed relatively sweet but I'm still not sure how so much indecision was crammed into such a short book!?! Definitely not a reread, but since I wasted less than 2 hours of my life on this borderline rubbish, I'm not crying t...more

Fast & far-fetched. This is a sugary romance novel, a guilty pleasure, brain candy! Like candy, a little is fine but you can't overdo it or it just makes you sick.

That said, while I don't hold huge literary expectations for these kinds of books, this one had a couple of inconsistencies that drove me to distraction:

1) the Bingo game... there is no B 16. There is no G 9. Has JE ever played bingo?
2) late in the book, there is continued reference to something happening in on...more

Before she wrote the Stephanie Plum series, Evanovich wrote a few short romances. This is one of them. Full of fun dialogue and crazy antics much seen now in the Stephanie books. Overall, it is a very quick read but fun. Main character Katherine is a too busy, overbooked, stressed musician who in the course of the book finds her life turned completely upside down starting with something crash landing through her roof and ending with a broken leg and four kittens. Along the way she falls har...more

I absolutely love Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum books so I was hoping to find more of the same from her.

I have mixed feelings on this one. Back in the Bedroom is more irreverent kooky funny characters, dialogue, plot and scenes but it struck a strong Stephanie Plum vibe. I’ll need to look which came first but Elsie reminded me so much of Grandma Mazur that it was like reading the exact same character. Don’t get me wrong she still cracked me up more than any other character in the bo...more

In a life before Plum, Janet Evanovich wrote a series of stand alone, short, quirky romance novels. Reading these you can see her progression towards the characters fans know and love in her bestselling Plum series.

Perhaps one of her better early books, Back to the Bedroom definitely keeps the reader entertained viewing a whirlwind relationship of two DC residents.

Fiery redheaded cellist, Kate, meets immature cartoonist Dave when something crashes through her room after ...more

This was a quick, fun read. There’s no deeper meaning, no seriousness, just a couple of seemingly incompatible people with great physical chemistry who are thrown into an unbelievable situation. This is very typical Evanovich, full of wild, over-the-top scenarios. After all, there’s nothing quite like meeting your girlfriend’s parents for the first time while there’s a drug bust going on across the street. This is a perfect book for a hot afternoon at the beach.

To be honest, this one had me rolling my eyes and saying “give me a break.” I enjoy a cheesy romance, but this was pushing it. I did love David though. He was so honest, caring, impulsive, and I had to find out what his real story was. He was quite obviously to good a guy to just lay around the house playing with toys until his money ran out. I liked how he treated Kathryn, teasing and a little pushy, but not too alpha.

I can’t say I recommend that you go out and read this. There are ...more

a friend gave me 4 of janet evanovich's 'romance' novels. while i LOVE the stephanie plum series, i didn't like this book as much. it was a quick read filled with evanovich's humor and zany plots, and the character elsie i adored! but, all in all, the story line, i felt, while funny was predictable.

a good book to read on the beach, though i still prefer stephanie...

i'll give the other 3 books a try too...

Somewhere in the back of my head I think I read this book before. If I hadn't heard great things about this author and read this book...I wouldn't be looking to read any more of her books. Her writing didn't impress me and the story just lacked something for me. It's a very short book so easily finished in a day...and with that in mind, the story was okay and the characters in their own way interesting. Elsie should have her own series!

Very cute story. Nice and light. Perfect for a summer read or on the beach read! Mainly the story is about some crazy spy happenings at one lady's house, so she has to move in with her male neighbor after her house is ransacked by a falling helicopter. He turns out to be a cute batchlor who has one the lottery and she a simple chello player. There is a crazy old lady and some cute kittens, really what is there not to like about this story. Enjoy!

Again, easily identifiable as a precursor to the Stephanie Plum series. I hope the books she wrote after starting the Stephanie Plum series are better than this. There are about 6 things in the 4 standalones I read that she wrote early on that happen in each of the books which is quite a bit lame and amateurish. Oh well. Will now finally only read the newer stuff and see if it is improved.

I'm sad to say that this was just okay for me. I have to admit that a big portion of my disappointment goes to the narrator. With any audio book the narrator can make it or break it. This time it kinda feel flat. The hunky main character sounded more like a teenage boy just waiting for puberty to get its groove on--squeaks and all.

The story itself was quite cute ... and worth a READ!

This cute audiobook romance had me smiling to and from work each day as I listened on my commute. I loved the quirky characters (Elsie is Grandma Mazur's lost twin!) and thought the guy was adorable. I'm not a big fan of narrator CJ Critt but thought she did an okay job on this one. I've already ordered a bunch more of these Evanovich romances on audio.

The main character upset me in this book, because she couldn't see real love when it was right before her eyes. David, the next door neighbor who had fallen in love with her, treated her like a queen, but all she gave him in return was a bad attitude and smart remarks. Finally, she realizes that love doesn't have to look and act a certain way. Thankfully she isn't too late.

This was a quick, fluff read. It lacks the entertainment value of the Plum books, but I think this is some of her earlier work. You can see shades of her more popular characters here, but the humor falls a little short and the romance is hurried.

Good if you're looking for something light, but nothing to get excited about.

Like the only other Evanovich book I've listened to, Rocky Road to Romance, it was ok. I didn't like the similarities between the two books and I wasn't all that fond of Elsie Hawkins who appears in both books. The narrator's voice also annoyed me a bit. Towards the end it seemed as if she got voices confused.

Romance, one in a series of reprints from Evanovich's early days as a writer. Red-headed overachiever Kate Finn meets her hot laid-back neighbor David Dodd when a mysterious helicopter part crashes through her roof. As far as romances go, it's standard (though minus the big misunderstanding/third act breakup) with some truly ridiculous one-paragraph sex scenes, but it's otherwise harmless and sort of sweet, lots of cuddling and kisses on the head. I really liked the voice of the male love intere...more

Listened to the audio book at work. There were definitely a couple of laugh-out-loud, hilarious parts, making it a tough book for work in some ways. With that said, it definitely made the day go by a bit faster for me, especially since I have wait periods of anywhere from 5min to 1hr at a time.

I really liked this book. It was more than just romance it was also about respect, understanding and relaxing. I found it interesting how Kate learned who she was and what her purpose was. I liked how she learned what LOVE really was. She was in a past relationship and she thought that there were other reasons why she was no longer with him. But LOVE had alot to do with it. This book made me laugh alot. It made me think. Oh and I wanted more.... it had a great beginning that kept me reading and...more

I do not usually go for romance, but needed to clean my pallet. I knew Janet Evanovich (Stephanie Plum series) would be just the ticket. This did not disappoint. Quick moving, funny, suspenseful and tear jerking. Only thing I didn't like about it was it was finished too soon.
