So taken was I with the idea of Switzerland that when we were asked, about grade 6, where we were going for the term holiday, I – who had never been on a holiday because we were way too poor – said Switzerland. I just might have gotten away with this but for the fact that my mother taught in the senior school. Since I had further elaborated when pressed, that we were going by boat – another fixation I had throughout childhood, seafaring – and the term holiday was a mere fortnight, news soon spread through the school that my mother was leaving her teaching job. In case you don’t get the plot so far, I was weaving this fantasy in Australia where I was born and raised.

Never mind the trouble I got into for this, it didn’t in the least affect my taste for anything Swittish.

Since then, as an adult I’ve been able to visit Switzerland five times, mostly Geneva. By no means goatherd territory, but still. You can see Geneva as a straightforwardly beautiful city. You can see it through Australian eyes as having that aesthetic qualities of age that our cities so lack, not to mention the mountain backdrop the like of which we would never see at home. Or you can see it, I discover, as a young child would whose dreams were always of other places. I confess as I’ve wandered about the city, staring at those snow-capped mountains, to feeling that I have come home in some way that I’m sure derives from the profound effect this utterly magical book had on me when I read it so long ago.

I don’t know if other people wonder if they have let down the small bundles of hopes and dreams they once were, but I do. It breaks my heart, the idea that I might have disappointed that little hopeful dreaming thing I was once, and I have found it a very emotional experience being in this dream I once went to sleep with every night. I really can’t remember, but I hope she – I – did always believe dreams come true. Yeah, well. Sometimes they do.

Vividly descriptive. Just whisk me to the Swiss Alps, bright with myriad blossoms, fragrant with fir and pine, alive with birdsong. The blessings of nature surround, the sun shines down all around, and never an unkind sound.

Thanks to all the bowdlerized, Disneyfied stupidifications it's been through, poor old Heidi's story gets a bum rap. My sister and I were so enamored of this book when we were little. With that in mind, I'll let my four-star rating stand. However, I recently ran across a copy of the book and thought it might be fun to read it again after all these years. Nostalgia and all that, right? My two favorite aunts gave me Heidi when I was eight years old. I don't know if it was Christmas or birthday; all I know is I have them to thank not only for this but for Anne of Green Gables (and my very favorite stuffed bear Snowball), bless their names forever. I enjoyed this book, and if any book ever exemplifies the phrase “and they lived happily ever after,” this is it. Everything is wrapped up so neatly at the end for Heidi, that I wouldn’t be surprised to find that she never suffered from so much as a hangnail for the rest of her life.

I enjoyed this book, and if any book ever exemplifies the phrase “and they lived happily ever after,” this is it. Everything is wrapped up so neatly at the end for Heidi, that I wouldn’t be surprised to find that she never suffered from so much as a hangnail for the rest of her life.

Again I must do a movie/book comparison, and this one is based on the Shirley Temple version of the movie. Having seen that thing so many times since I was but a wee tot myself, I have difficulty separating the two in my head. For example in the book, Klara’s father is Mr. Sesemann, and the chatelaine is Miss Rottenmeier, but as I was reading, my mind kept calling them Herr Sesemann and Fraulein Rottenmeier. I couldn’t shake it. Nor could I shake the images of any of the characters; they resembled the characters in the movie completely even though the physical descriptions were a tad different for a couple of them.

As seems to be the case with almost any book to movie transition, Hollywood took some liberties. In fact, they took a lot with this one. Absent from the book are both outright kidnappings of Heidi. The first departure of Heidi is done with the grandfather’s consent even though he’s against it, but consent he does nonetheless. Because of this, there is no grandfather searching Frankfurt for Heidi because he knows exactly where she is. The second one doesn’t happen at all, nor does Fraulein Rottenmeier try to sell Heidi to the gypsies. In the book, Rottenmeier is just a prissy lady who likes things in apple pie order. Heidi has a way of being a piece of grit in the cogs of life, so Rottenmeier is frequently vexed, and punishing Heidi, but there is no evil behind any of it; just a desire to get all the ducks in a row which is pretty much what one should want in a head housekeeper. Yeah, she’s unpleasant, and even harsh, but certainly not evil.

Another character that’s different in the book, or at least largely glossed over in the movie, is goatherd Peter. He has a much more active role in the novel, although I must say he is probably one of the stupidest boys I’ve ever read about. It’s a good thing goatherd and gullible are near each other in the dictionary, because if this book is any indication, the two ought to be well acquainted. Though not as exciting as kidnapping, the predicaments perpetrated by poor, pusillanimous Peter provide pleasingly proficient plot proceedings (but no pecks of pickled peppers, say sorry). I felt kind of sorry for the kid, though I would’ve had more pity were he not so dumb. It’s apparent Johanna Spyri didn’t care much for boys, for none in this book come off looking all that great.

Looking through other reviews of this book, I see that some people disliked the religious connections. Heidi is taught about God, how to pray, what to expect, et cetera, through a couple of characters periodically throughout the book. However, I didn’t find it to be heavy-handed, or as though Spyri were proselytizing directly to the reader, but that’s really a judgment call that only the reader can make. It didn’t bother me, and it’s certainly nothing compared to that Paul guy in the Bible; talk about beating a dead horse! Anyway, I don’t think it should scare anyone off from reading this book.

So, there you have it. I enjoyed this kid’s tale about the little Swiss girl. It was well written, and both fun and quick to read, and I would suggest it to anyone who enjoys light-hearted and simple stories.(less)

I never read this book as a kid. It sounded too girly. But it's a classic, so gave it a shot.

It's a slower read, for normal juvenile lit--owing to the fact, I'm sure, that it was written more than 100 years ago. Compared to other things I've read from the same time period, the book is a page turner! And it's a page turner compared to most of the adult fare I read, too. But it's not a lightweight book in terms of wordiness, length, and descriptions.

The edition that I actually read is from 1954 and I absolutely loved the tale of the little girl who goes to live with her grandfather in the mountains, etc. She shows a real strength of character and an aptitude to adapt to her surroundings and make the best of the situations in which she finds herself.

When I was 14, I ran away from home and lived in various places for a year. Fortunately, I had a family that made sure it wasn't on the street, but I was no less lonely or frightened with a roof over my head. I love Heidi! I feel the same way about the landscape of my home as she does. I love my Idaho mountains and the miles and miles of sagebrush. God's creations inspire people--and I believe they inspire goodness. This book brings back wonderful memories of my childhood and the beginning of my love for reading. I remember wanting to be like Heidi, wandering the mountain slopes with Peter and having goats’ milk, bread and cheese for lunch. I first read this book when I was about 7 years old and just loved it. I think it was the gorgeous descriptions of Heidi's mountain that really won me over. Although I have read this book numerous times, I have really come to appreciate the wild and colorful nature of it and will read it again and again. Reading with my kids is really a selfish endeavor. I just want an excuse to either read childrens books I'd always meant to or revisit past worlds where a memorable part of my childhood dwelled. Not so much a review as a reflection...

I read this book as a child and really must revisit it again soon. But what has stayed with me over the years is the cheese that Heidi and her grandfather toasted over an open fire on toasting forks. It sounded impossible and delicious at the same time. My exposure to cheese at the time was limited to Kraft Cheddar Processed Cheese. These days I wouldn't classify it as real cheese. It certainly would not have survived the toasting process!

Heidi is the first non- school book that I chose from my parent’s library and read unprompted when I was 9 years old. I remember curling up on a beanbag in my room and instantly falling in love with the characters and magic that leaped at me page after page. An adventuresome and lively girl named Heidi is taken by her Aunt Detie to live with her grandfather high in the Swiss Alps. Her grandfather, however, is a foul-tempered and antisocial man who lives the life of a recluse- warily referred to by the villagers as "Uncle Alp". Despite this, he takes Heidi in and eventually warms to her righteous and trusting nature. Meanwhile, Heidi immediately takes to the life in the mountains. She befriends Peter the goatherd, and the two roam the mountain meadows daily like the carefree children they are. Heidi has a strong sense of justice by nature, and jumps on the chance to correct any small misfortune- the poverty of Peter's family, the illness of his grandmother, and even Peter's unwillingness to go to school in winter. In convincing her grandfather to help right these wrongs, she also inadvertently helps to redeem him in the eyes of the villagers.

However, just as things seem to be settling down, more trouble arises. The pastor from Dorfli, the village down the mountain, visits Uncle Alp and asks that Heidi be sent to school in the winter, like Peter and the other children. He also suggests that they come down from the mountain in winter, so that she can get to school more easily. Uncle Alp detests Dorfli and its inhabitants and refuses, saying that there is no need for Heidi to be educated, as she is perfectly happy up in the mountains.

Not long afterwards, Detie shows up again. She is working for a rich family in Frankfurt, and has discovered that the family is looking for a lively young girl to play with their daughter, a cripple. She decided to pick up Heidi and present her as a candidate, fully expecting both Heidi and Uncle Alp to be pleased with this arrangement. When she discovers the reverse is true, she and Uncle Alp have an argument and he loses his temper, telling her to take Heidi and leave. She does so, assuring Heidi absentmindedly that if she goes, she will be able to send Peter's family as many nice things as she wants.

While Heidi gets along very well with the invalid Clara and the various servants of the house, she is unsuited to city life and gets into all sorts of mishaps. She is constantly punished by Clara's governess Miss Rottenmeier for her lack of manners and education. Heidi is immensely homesick and attempts to run away, but is caught. Clara's kind Grandmamma sees her misery, and teaches her to read and pray to God.

Heidi proves to be so miserable that her health deteriorates and she takes to sleepwalking and dreaming of going home. The servants see her and mistake her for a ghost, but Mr Sesemann intervenes and discovers the true problem. It is decided that Heidi must return home for her own sake, and she goes delightedly. When she returns, she convinces her Grandfather that God loves him and uses her small allowance to provide for Peter's ill Grannie.

Clara had been meant to visit Heidi, but proves to be too ill. Her Doctor goes in her stead. When he sees how happy and healthy Heidi is, he decides that it would do Clara good to visit her. It is all arranged, and Clara is taken up the mountain with her wheelchair to Uncle Alp's house. She and Heidi are delighted to see one another, and she becomes a good deal healthier from the environment. She also goes out with Heidi and Peter to the meadows each day, a fact which delights Heidi and upsets Peter, who is not used to having a rival for Heidi's affection.(less)

On a long airplane trip home from California I started reading this book. The optimism and innocence portrayed in this delightful novel made the wearisome trip much more bearable.
