Death should be the end of your life— not the beginning.

Sky Brooks’s life started with a death—her own. Sky’s spent the first twenty-three years of her life unaware of this, among other things. She always thought she was just a shapeshifter until she wakes up in a strange house in rural Illinois—battered, bruised, and with only vague memories of her mother’s death at the

This is a great new find, and currently book 2 has only recently been released.

The main character keeps up a good level of maturity and sensibility which I find refreshing, considering the quantity of people that are regularly as thick as a whale omelette. I'm not saying she never makes a stupid move, but when she does it tends to be a knee jerk reaction that she believes she can live with.

Meet Skylar, a beautiful and peacefully innocent young woman, in a beautifully peaceful and innocent life. She loves her adopted mother, she loves her boring little world, and if she’s a bit snarky it can be forgiven because, after all, her birth mother was a witch and the book launches off almost immediately with her beloved adopted mother being murdered by brutal vampires. Oh, and she herself is possessed by a spirit shade (the only means by which her hexy birth mother was able to save her ...more

4.5 stars! That line was on the first page. It was an epic first page to say the least and I was completely intrigued. I thought I was over the whole vampires and werewolves stories but I am so happy to say that apparently I'm not!

Wasted Potential

The description intrigued me. I thought it was about as new an idea as you can get in this over saturated genre. That being said I can't recommend this book. First Skylar is all but nonexistent in this book. Oh she's the main character but she doesn't do anything remotely important or even useful. She's a werewolf but she's a weak victim. She can't fight or protect herself. She doesn't have an iron will or anything that stands out. She isn't completely stupid but she's not smart.

A. Overall: To begin, the book started off with a bang! Skylar was attack by the vampires of course, and her adoptive mother got killed. Just the way Skylar was acting toward the others when they tried to help her, then I knew I wasn't going to like her very much. She is nosy, sarcastic, and a bitch. I would have like more romance in this book. I know you are running for your life, but the way she describe Ethan, I would like some romance. I have a love and hate relationship with Skylar.

I'm half way through this novel and I'm bored out of my mind. I see the potential although I'm unsure if it can be reached. The heroine is weak and has a pathetic story line. There is really nothing to her other than what she is or potentially could be. I find myself really frustrated and angry that the most she does, is get bit by vampires all the time. LAME!!

Finished and I still found it boring... I think I'll try the next novel and hope for the best.

Edit: I received an update from the author that Moon Tortured was taken to a new editor, and a lot of things I complained about in this review might not be important anymore, since it sounds like it got some heavy editing. Anyway, I still don't know if it's the series for me (because I haven't read the new version), but I don't feel right leaving a negative review when so much work has been done to improve it, so I've cleared my rating, and might give the new version a go.

When I read the first book in a new series, I'm primarily looking for one thing: does this book make me want to read the next one? In the case of Moon Tortured, I would have to say that it did; however, the journey to that point was a rough one. This urban fantasy includes the familiar players in the genre: werewolves/were-animals, vampires, warlocks, and mentions of the fae, elves, etc. Definitely in the paranormal world here.

Skylar Brooks is a werewolf and something else that becomes the centr

I was gifted this book by McKenzie Hunter in exchange for an honest review.

There are a lot of thing about this book that I liked. Skylar's 23, not an odd age like 15, and that she's a fem werewolf. The start of this book really gets things going. Skylar is attacked by vampires and her adoptive mother is killed. This face paced-ness keeps up through out the book. Skylar is sassy, sarcastic, and nosy all the things I love a leading lady to have. She did start out a tiny on the blah si

Fans of Patricia Briggs's Mercy Thompson series and Racel Vincent's Shifter series will fall head over heels for this series!

Meet Skye Brooks - a born werewolf who wants nothing more than to be normal. Too bad the paranormal world is so determined to welcome her into its own. After an attack on her home, Skye is offered protection from the local werewolf pack - whether she wants it or not. Here she will meet a vast array of new people including Ethan, the brooding and domineering Beta of the pac

Delivering an exciting beginning, the action packed story snatches you in the opening scene with exciting danger, and sweeping drama. Full of shifters, vampires, witches, spells and a magical gem, the author creates an unique world with a different twist. Skylar, the main character, is thrown into a lot of emotional and physical situations that she just isn’t ready for. She has a really hard time with understanding and excepting who she is, and clearly doesn’t fit into the lifestyle of the ...more

This book was a great read! Although it started off a bit rocky, the story unfolded beautifully.

I love the way the author wrote the characters. They all seemed to have realistic feel toward everything considering their situation. I love the change that the author did with Skylar. Instead of making her like your typical heroine, Skylar remained naïve in the most perfect way. I love that the author gave Skylar a chance to really grow as the story progressed. Although I was really hoping for that b

Moon Tortured is not only the first book in the series, it's also the 1st book I've read of McKenzie Hunter, it won't be the last. It's well written, the characters are well fleshed out, the by play of Skylar, Josh and Ethan has bits of expected and unexpected teen /young adult angst. The plot that surmised Sky is more than a werewolf plays out beautify and quickly when they find out what her biological mother had done to her in uterus to keep her alive. Lots of physical violence as the Vampires ...more

At first I did not think I liked this book. sky's stubbornness\stupidity drove me batty. The more I read the more intrigued and the more I realized that she was staying true to her character. It was nice to see her grow from being a stubborn scaredy cat bent on clinging to her humanity. To taking somewhat control and stop running and to try to come to terms with herself. I cannot wait to read the next book now!

I honestly think that this series could be the next big thing! As I read it I could see the potential for a movie or TV series.
If you are a fan of the paranormal fiction then this is a book you need to get your hands on.

Fascinating read

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are definitely flawed. Skylar is convinced she's a monster that shouldn't exist even as she's abruptly thrown into the world of the supernatural. The werewolves are not your warm and fuzzy variety. They're ruthless but have a strict code they adhere to. Our werewolf hero is rather an ass, but shows more and more depth as the book continues. I love how the entire world and characters are so flawed and don't miraculously change in a moment

Skylar hates her life. Each full moon forces her to shift into a wolf...and though it has been happening since childhood, she and her adoptive mother don't know why. Skylar desperately wishes to be a normal girl with the possibility of a normal future.

This dream is crushed when she and her mother are attacked and only Skylar survives. Help comes from the Midwest Pack of were-animals who rescue her for reasons of their own. For the first time, Skylar meets other were-animals and must come to term

I worried this could easily turn into a soft story with a weak female protagonist, but it was clear from the beginning, while Sky was not a dominant, aggressive wolf, she had strength of character and was loyal to her friends. An excellent story line with well-developed characters and a fast pace. Ignoring my huge TBR (to be read) list, I purchased book two and started reading immediately. Highly recommend this series, and I hope it remains true to the characters who make the story hard to put ...more

A new urban fantasy that is different enough to not be repetative. It felt at first like Kelley Armstrong's Bitten, with the girl forced to a pack only wanting to be human. This is more, there us so much going on that at times i had to go reread parts thinking i missed something. I really enjoyed it though, not a lot of romance which is fine cause otherwise it would have bern predictable. Some of the characters could have been fleshed out a bit more, just to understand them more. Overall an ...more

This book was interesting, and I enjoyed the general story line; however the main character, Skylar, really annoyed me. She made stupid decisions, repeatedly and was too submissive for my liking.

I won't read the rest of the series, because although I really liked most of the secondary characters, I just couldn't stand to read more of Skylar.

A wonderful start to an amazing new series.

Mckenzie Hunter introduces us to Sky Brooks in this first book of her series. Sky can alternately make you cheer and make you cringe. Wanting to slap her, and wanting her to succeed. She's a young idealistic woman who wants the world to work in a certain way, and fights anything that has the potential to alter that view. Anyone who has gone through the painful process of transitioning from one phase of life to another can definitely relate. Mckenzie slo
