Next to Bockris' invaluable Lou Reed bio Transformer (and probably Uptight, which I've yet to hunt down a copy of), perhaps the best single written document of The Velvet Underground. Great pictures, an insightful and dense collection of essays, a very handy time-line. My only quibble would be the band approval of the final product- meaning there is nary a mention of Reed's homosexual proclivities (not even in relation to the naming of the group), Doug Yule gets to downplay his role in Reed be...more
When people speak of the work of New York’s first underground art-rock band, the word that usually comes to mind is ’seminal’ – after all this is the group that later influenced an entire NY rock scene from Television to Sonic Youth and many others (their influence extended well beyond these shores to most of Europe as well.)
In this new book, edited by Johan Kugelberg, the word that most comes to mind, is ‘art.’ Kugelberg, in his love and devotion to this early NY rock ensemble, has ...more

Cool. This coffee table sized book is a remarkable document of America’s best band The Velvet Underground. A band that was a bridge between fine art, underground cinema, deviant times, noise music, great looking sunglasses, NYC nightlife via the 60’s, do-wop pop and out-of-their heads models. The Warhol world in a nutshell.
What we have here are photos of the band (some I have never seen before) as well as flyers, posters, artifacts from the world of Lou, Nico, John, Sterling and Mauree...more

Found the pictures and stories fascinating. I was disappointed that the captions/notes for the pictures were not with the picture and at times pages ahead or behind. Was frustrated flipping back and forth trying to find them.
I served as production assistant for this book, scanning all the archival materials (and making the occasional editorial suggestion). So I'm biased when I say it's great. But it is.
Full-on Fine Art treatment with loads of awesome pictures, interviews, reminiscences. Totally indispensable.
Pretty.
Beautifully designed art book full of rare band photos, concert posters, advertisements, and related graphic ephemera. Text includes a great new essay by Jon Savage, new and vintage interviews with various band members, and an offbeat essay by Lou Reed that originally appeared in Andy Warhol's issue of 'Aspen' magazine. Sure it's for hardcore fans only, but then I can't think of a rock group that deserves your undying fandom more.
