Hands down, Emperor Mage -- third book in Tamora Pierce's The Immortals series -- was the best book in the series for me. It had ACTION, SUSPENSE, VILLAINY, DIVINE INTERVENTION, and all kinds of COOL THINGS! (Sorry, I guess high enthusiasm on my part really shows a lack of proper description.) Though the prior book, Wolf-Speaker, left me with mixed feelings, I felt that Pierce really upped the ante in this installment. Everything I loved about the series -- the character interactions, the world-building, the magic, the discoveries -- were back in full force.

Oddly, this book reminded me of how much I had loved The Queen's Thief books by Megan Whalen Turner because much of the same elements play out here as they do in that series: there are political intrigues, ambiguous characters, and plot twists and turns that keep you reading and wondering.

Of course, there are plenty of characters to love here; in particular, I really came to love Kitten/Kit (a baby dragon whose real name is Skysong) and the prior enemy Stormwing named Rikash. Also of note as far as characters go is Prince Kaddar, the Emperor Mage's nephew and heir, who develops a friendship with Daine.

The relationship between Numair and Daine also reaches some nice heights in this book since you see jealousy on Daine's part (when Numair's once lover, Varice, is introduced) and protective care from Numair (when he believes Prince Kaddar is taking too much of an interest in Daine). It's nice to see this kind of development since it's rare in most books these days.

As far as the climax goes. . .well, needless to say, it was my favorite of the series. That's all I'm willing to say, lest I spoil it.

Emperor Mage is a thrilling and engrossing installment to The Immortals series, and I would recommend the series simply so that this book could be read and loved. It truly is a wonderful book that I hope others will cherish as well.(less)

Let me preface this review with the note that I listened to this on audiobook and thus may grossly mispell the names. I will try to Wiki the names as best as I can.

Let me also get this out of the way: the book feels a LOT like a cross between Prince Caspian and Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Our protagonists head to the South, where it is warmer, the people act more Middle Eastern, the Emperor is mean and nasty, he has a kind, sweet nephew, they worship other gods, etc. However, I actually think that "Emperor Mage" does the "Prince Caspian" story better than "Prince Caspian". And while the stories are similar, there are differences.

So, I've been trucking along through this quartet. The first book, Wild Magic, really impressed me. The second, Wolf Speaker, bored me. This book, while it certainly had some problems, felt like a great improvement.

Our characters are back and in fine form. Daine has adjusted rather well to being a shapeshifter, though I think she draws closer and closer to the Mary Sue line in this book. Here, she learns yet ANOTHER magical ability--to wake up the dead. Seems like every book has her learning at least one new ability (though admittedly this ability is NOT related to her Wild Magic, but was a gift she was given). It's a good thing this series is only four books long, or she might have picked up super strength, super hair growth, and super bug repellant before the end. But one thing I cannot pick on Daine for is that she is an independent woman, not relying on a man to sweep her off her feet and save the day. Her fate is in her hands; she DOES get angry when someone dies and reacts instead of fluttering and waiting for her emo boyfriend to appear. In fact, even with all her Mary Sue qualities, Daine makes me wish fervently for the days when this character was the norm, instead of the whiny emosparklyteenaged brats we get now.

Numair and Alanna are back and are great. I really wished we could have Onua back though (she was my favorite!). I really liked Qadar, the Prince, and his relationship to Daine. I felt there was some potential chemistry there, but nothing so overtly sexual that it drove me nuts. Even the Emperor Mage himself was great--a villain that was clever without going into Cackling, Moustache Twirling territory.

Daine acquires another animal minion, Zeek, and I really have to wonder what the point of him was. I am not a monkey/marmoset fan, and, furthermore, he doesn't really seem to DO anything that couldn't be done by someone else--such as Kit. Speaking of Kit, here is another character that is venturing into Mary Sue territory (which I still applies to dragons???). Frak, the things this dragon can do: detect magic, open doors...she's the Swiss army knife of this realm!

The story was a lot more interesting than "Wolf Speaker". Although there were parts that were dull to me (I had to read the Wiki summary to jump start my memory of some of the events), the story felt more unique. Having the Tortollans travel to Carthak for diplomacy was a great idea; having Daine come along to heal the sick animals was great, very clever and makes her DOING something instead of just being a hanger-on. I wasn't fond of the main character that appears to die at one point in the book--it is SO obvious that the character WOULDN'T die. What made it even more ridiculous was how Daine had to spend SO MUCH TIME convincing herself said character wasn't dead; as I read this, I was reminded of how Bella Swan, in "New Moon", kept thinking Edward hated her guts even while she was canoodling him for a quarter of the book and had to be bludgeoned to believe that he didn't. I also liked how we FINALLY got some closure about Daine's father.

What REALLY improved my opinion of this book were two things: the climax and the religion/pantheon of gods/goddesses. The climax is positively heart-pounding. I love how Daine really takes control and chases down the Emperor Mage, never backing down once, never wussing out to let a man take over. What was also genius was how the story ends but leaves just enough space for the final book. The second, the gods and goddesses, was something I thought was really clever. It was like both the Tortall gods/goddesses and the Carthak gods/goddesses existed in an even BIGGER audience of gods and goddesses. I'm sure this has been done elsewhere, but this is the first time I remember seeing this, and I thought it was clever.

"Emperor Mage" is an improvement over "Wolf Speaker". The characters are great (as always), but the story really seems to be going somewhere, having a focus, an end in sight. For me, "Emperor Mage" is a solid 3.5 stars rounded to 4 (to differentiate from the disappointing "Wolf Speaker"). "Realm of the Gods", here I come!(less)

Third in the Immortals fantasy adventure series for children about a young girl with the ability to speak and heal animals. This particular adventure occurs in Carthak.

All I can say is that I hope King Jon realizes what a treasure the kingdom of Tortall has in Daine! And Daine is beginning to see Numair with a different eye than that of a young girl...more that of a young woman.

I'm pretty sure the last time I read this book was before I started college. I have to say it was pretty cool to reread it now that I am a geology graduate student. All I can say is: dinosaurs. In a fantasy setting. I loved Tamora Pierce's description of the different types of dinosaurs. There was even a description of an Archaeopteryx, the missing link fossil between birds and dinosaurs! And they actually played a pertinent part in the storyline!

Though this no doubt did affect my perception of invoking the use of breaking the wall betwen life and death in my work, I have always had a very strong aversion to crossing over that line in this sort of way. More importantly, this work introduces the concept of leaving the entire world behind and heading off into a strange world involving bizarre deities. This serves for a good lesson in scene change taken to the extreme. It also allowed me to feel what a character might feel like (or what I would think they should feel) when isolated from everything and everyone they have ever known. These are potent and very heavy emotions that are hard to portray. I do not claim to have mastered how to show these yet, but this book helped me to begin to feel that at an age where such a thing is hard to comprehend.

Since I can not remember most of the story of this book, I shall instead say that another way ths book helped me as a writer, was by how realistic its portrayal of the animals and Diane's experinces with them opened up so many new doors to deeper understanding about just how different animals really are from people. Along with the Warriors series, this gave me a great respect for diversity of life and the truly wide rift that a person would feel between them and animals if they should somehow gain the capacity of speech. A dog is not a human and neither is a cat, each of these creatures would have a very different view of this world from we humans indeed. If I ever choose to go about this route at some point in my story, this is very valuable material. Additionally, it showed me how to make character personalities more beliveable overall.

A final thing I should mention about this story, is how when Diane shapeshifts and returns back to normal, her clothes to not magically appear on her or transform with her. This might seem like a small and perhaps best avoided detail. To me though, it was rather surprising, I had never before read a book that did not downplay or avoid functional nudity in this form. It does make alot more sense though. Afterall, even if a character is able to transform themselves, their clothing not a part of their physical or spiritual being and as such would probably not be affected. I was also forced to experience some of the feelings of the main character as she first realizes and then later must manage this inconvenience. My world may or may not involve such dilemmas, however, considering my style and the values I hold, it is not likely that I would even expand the pursuit of realism in this direction in my work. I would not have even thought to do so, without reading this series and it allowed me to make a conscience choice about my writing style.(less)

There are also growing concerns about the barrier between the human and immortal realms. The immortals are coming through more and more every day, and the humans aren't prepared to deal with them.

Daine is sent to Carthak with other ambassadors to attend the peace talks with Emperor Ozorne. Daine is also tasked with a special job. The emperor's one weakness is his love for his birds, and they are growing ill. He doesn't understand the sickness and he needs Daine's gift with animals to heal them. Numair is also part of the envoy to Carthak, upon questionable terms. Numair studied magic at the University there and then left for Tortall. He was branded a traitor and sentenced to death. Reluctantly, his old friend and competitor, Emperor Ozorne, lifted the death sentence from him, but Numair is on dangerous turf while in the Emperor's domain.
Daine is soon to learn that things are not as they seem. Carthak is a strange land to her. It is a land where slavery is acceptable, a concept that she cannot understand. SHe is able to shift into various animal forms, and the thought of a cage terrifies her. She befriends the Emperor's nephew and begins to learn more about the situation in Carthak and the danger that the nation is in.
The Gods are angry, to say the least. Carthak has abandoned the temples and the people are forbidden to pay tribute to the once beloved Gods. To prevent disaster, things must change abruptly. Once more, it comes down to Daine and her unusual abilities to set things right and prevent disaster. There are also very small traces of romance building between Daine and Numair as their relationship slowly evolves from that of teacher-pupil to friends to something more.
Overall, this is an adventure filled book. It is interesting to see how Daine is growing up and learning more about the political side of the world while still holding on to her primal instincts. As a heroine, I like her a lot. As always, Tamora Pierce delivers an enjoyable story. (less)

Emperor Mage, the third in the Immortals series, is my favourite of the four books. It's rich with great characters, excellent story, fabulous action and above all a fantastic local that's full of colour and verve all on its own.

It's rich with great characters, excellent story, fabulous action and above all a fantastic local that's full of colour and verve all on its own.

Daine has come to Carthak, with a diplomatic tortall delegation, to cure the (probably evil) Emperor Ozorne's sick birds in his beloved Aviary. But after three years, or more, of warmongering being credited to him is it possible that this diplomatic mission is simply a ploy?

Set in the hot and tropical Carthak, Emperor Mage has a very different feel to that of the first two books, and the lavish and strict court of the Emperor is a big change for Daine from the relaxed northern Tortall court. The animals are more exotic, the food and company are of a higher calibre, and expectations are running high that Daine can meet and exceed the rumours that have come across the sea before her. But the biggest change in the story is the involvement of the gods, and the Graveyard Hag especially. Nothing like a pissed off God to liven a story up!

Some of the new characters are worth the book itself, Zek, a marmoset she rescues right at the beginning is especially fun. I love his proud discovery of keys and their usage. Lindhall Reed, Numairs friend and old teacher is also a great character, though there isn't as much of him as I would have liked in the story. Finally Kaddar, Ozorne's young heir charmingly goes from bored boy dreading entertaining the female foreigner Daine to enraptured young man eager to get to know this unusual girl who's continually surprising him. Although I could have lived without out the slightly creepy jealousy this incites from Numair (despite the fact he's obviously sleeping with a past fling he reunites with at the palace). Gick.

Alanna, Gary and Duke Gareth are enjoyable additions to the diplomatic party and I liked seeing the interaction between Duke Gareth and young Daine especially. Though I have to say that there's a moment that really bothers me in the book, where Numair is commenting on how pretty Daine looks and when Daine references Alanna, Numair comments although they're good friends he would never consider her someone to compare other girls too.
Now honestly!
After spending four books letting us know our hero can be a pretty girl in dresses and it makes her no less of a tough ass, and although she isn't the most beautiful girl on earth she's charming and attractive enough to win her fair share of men, I dislike that Tamora Pierce then turns around and makes reference to her being kind of manly due to her status as a knight. And enough of calling her stocky!! She's short and probably muscular, but she's continually referenced as incredibly quick and graceful, I cannot reconcile this with her continually being referred to as stocky! But maybe that's just me.

Truthfully, this book is my favourite of the series, and I think I could happily of finished the series on this high note. Unfortunately there is a fourth book, and I don't love it or what it drags us through to end Daine's story. But it has some good moments and some characters that come back later on that are worth mentioning. So stayed tune for tomorrows review of The Realms of the Gods, Book 4 of the Immortals Quartet.

With her wild magic, Daine can communicate with animals, see the world through their senses, and even transform herself into one, all skills that the first two books of THE IMMORTALS series have shown her develop.

In this third book, the stakes are raised as Daine accompanies an ambassadorial delegation to Carthak, where she is to use her wild magic to cure the Carthaki Emperor's sick pet birds as a show of goodwill. Carthaki ships have been attacking the coast of Daine's country of Tortall for the last year, resulting in increasingly violent skirmishes, and the intention of this delegation is to negotiate for peace between the nations.

Accompanying Daine on this trip are the famous lady knight Alanna, star of Pierce's LIONESS QUARTET, Tortall's most powerful mage and Daine's teacher, Numair, and the young dragon, Kitten.

Daine finds Carthak to be an alternately strange and disturbing place; she's not comfortable with the practice of slavery, which is legal there, or with Emperor Orzone, a powerful mage in his own right. When the peace negotiations stall, things start to heat up, and the balance of power between two great nations has been staked on the outcome.

In what is undoubtedly my favorite book of the quartet, Pierce continues to develop Daine's skills and abilities while simultaneously allowing the readers entry into the struggles that this wild mage has had to face in order to build her talent. The cast of supporting characters is large but nuanced, and although it might initially seem an easy job to discern between the two sides of the impending fight, the distinctions are increasingly and intelligently blurred.

I particularly enjoyed the further characterization of Numair, as well as the introduction of the young Prince Kaddar, who always kept me guessing. The pacing is spot on, with seemingly innocuous events leading up to a powerful climactic sequence.

I read it all the way through without stopping!

Emperor Mage is currently my favorite (and looking like it will not be overtaken) of the Immortals Quartet. In this third installment Daine and the gang for to Carthak for peace negotiations. She arrives, immediately judges everything she sees as something strange and/or barbaric (mostly 'and') then becomes the talk of the town (as usual). She isn't happy to confine her miracles to talking with three or four gods, but also effeminating a group of trained soldiers, for which...moreDiane Sarrasi heads off to ...the Middle East!? Well...only sort of. She heads off to Carthak to negotiate peace with those whom she has been in one sort of battle or another for the series thus far.

She arrives, immediately judges everything she sees as something strange and/or barbaric (mostly 'and') then becomes the talk of the town (as usual). She isn't happy to confine her miracles to talking with three or four gods, but also effeminating a group of trained soldiers, for which she is greatly celebrated by these same men. She proceeds to become Jesus, then God as she first raises People from the dead, then in a burst of outrage decimates the city.

Despite all that I enjoyed the book the most so far in the series. Diane truly is a somewhat insane character (perhaps a bit pulpy in her unbeatable power and charm), but Pierce's other fine characters make up for Diane's shortcomings. Despite the sometimes unbelievable reactions characters have in the book (nobody likes to be beaten at anything least of all a young man (note the ego) by a little girl), for the most part the book holds you in Pierce's realm and enchants you to keep flipping those pages.

One thing though that I felt a bit let down about in the book was Diane's main reason for being along on the "Peace Negotiation Mission." Her purpose was to further the talks by taking care of the emperors precious birds. They have what seems to be a very strange illness, described as a black mist around their normally bronze auras. The way Pierce describes the birds and their sickness had me thinking that someone had to be poisoning the birds and that would be the big mystery that Diane had to figure out to save the negotiations. It wasn't. The birds were rarely mentioned and seemed stuck in there only as a reason to get Diane to where she needed to be. Not the most well-done narrative trick. It turned out the birds had lead poisoning from eating the sealant off some decorative murals. ...totally lame. Also, wouldn't she have figured that out after looking at them once? From her other famed powers, one might assume that...but then again that would just make Diane's presence superfluous and keep her from falling into the Emperor's trap later.

So in general I liked it, but in comparison with some of Pierce's other work I thought it was a bit sloppy.

I didn't feel very nostalgic while reading it. Which was a bit of a disappointment. I think I stopped feeling nostalgic on the second one, but now I'm reading them just to finish what I started.(less)

For those of you who read my previous reviews you know I love this series but this novel is particular has a turning point for Daine and I feel even for Tamora Pierce and her writing. This novel (without giving anything away truly) is when you really start to see Daine in a new light and her character starts to grow. Aaaaand, we’re back. Everything that I felt was lacking in the second book (eg, my interest) was revived completely in this book. Daine is back in the land of the two-leggers and is facing the oft named but never before seen Emperor Mage Ozorne. And it turns out that Ozorne really shouldn’t have messed with our Daine. I think I liked this Immortals better than the second.

I listened to it on CD over about a month. Please excuse spelling as I didn't see any of the names written.

Zek (sp?) the pet (enslaved) monkey Daine saves, is very entertaining and is good at proving that smaller animals can have important thoughts and feelings, too.

There are a few things I love more in novels than a magical character going berserk with their powers. I just love it. I love seeing the destroy things, draw to the extent of their power to avenge their loved one(s). I'll admit this novel, even with all the cool descriptions, got boring at times. I would've given a 4.5 but since I don't have the heart to give this book a 4 star review, I will have to settle with a 5.

It is strange how I feel about this book at this point.
Again the author introduces fascinating new characters and adventure that kept me going. It amazes me how she, so effortlessly, writes in between characters. Sometimes, I have to read it twice to realize who the narrator is! but towards the finish, something was nagging me at the back of my head.

I absolutely love every book the Tamora Pierce has written and I was just as sucked into this one as all of her others. I really can't wait to see what happens. I love Diana as a character and the way that she displays her power at the end. though her relationship with her teacher is becoming a little more interesting.

Also, don't be alarmed by the number of books I've read. When I get bored, I go through the different lists and rediscover books I've read in the past. It's a very evil way to use up time when I should be doing other things. Obviously, I've read a lot of books in 54 years!

I was born in South Connellsville, PA. My mother wanted to name me "Tamara" but the nurse who filled out my birth certificate misspelled it as "Tamora". When I was 8 my family moved to California, where we lived for 6 years on both sides of the San Francisco peninsula.

I started writing stories in 6th grade. My interest in fantasy and science fiction began when I was introduced to ‘The Lord of the Rings’ by J. R. R. Tolkien and so I started to write the kind of books that I was reading. After my parents divorced, my mother took my sisters and me back to Pennsylvania in 1969. There I went to Albert Gallatin Senior High for 2 years and Uniontown Area Senior High School for my senior year.

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, I wrote the book that became The Song of the Lioness fantasy quartet. I sold some articles and 2 short stories and wrote reviews for a martial arts movie magazine. At last the first book of the quartet, Alanna: The First Adventure was published by Atheneum Books in 1983.

Tim Liebe, who became my Spouse-Creature, and I lived in New York City with assorted cats and two parakeets from 1982 - 2006. In 2006 we moved to Syracuse, New York, where we live now with assorted cats, a number of squirrels, birds, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and woodchucks visiting our very small yard. As of 2009, I will have published 26 books, in addition to a number of short stories, articles, audio books, and a 6-episode comics series, "White Tiger: a Hero's Compulsion," co-written with Tim Liebe.(less)
