Dubbelspel certainly is an interesting read and a ‘must’ if you want to learn about Curaçao and its inhabitants. I admit, it took me several pages to get into the story, but once I did, it was intriguing. The original novel is in Dutch but there is also an English translation.

Although the book was first published in 1973, something one has to bear in mind of course while reading, it gives an accurate representation of the lifestyle and the scenery on the island.

Loved this book. I read the dutch version and live next to the island where the story takes place. It is by far one of the best dutch Caribbean books. The way the people are represented is very accurate to the lifestyle on the Dutch Antilles. This story takes place before Curacao has a separate status within the Dutch kingdom which has only happend just yesterday the 10 of october 2010. The political background and the playful storyline is absolutely brilliant. Definitely a must read.

I’ve read this book for the first time when I was 17 as a compulsory read for my literature reading list and since then I’ve re-read it a few times. This last re-read was a tribute of sorts, due to Frank Martinus Arions passing.
Double play is truly one of my favorites of all time. Even though it was published in 1973 (I was 3!), to me it still is an accurate narrative of some aspects of life on Curacao. To this day.

It’s a story about four men, Manchi Sanantonio (bailiff and owner of the bigges

Tenminste tijdens mijn middelbare school periode.

Loved it, one of my favorite books. I loved that I could recognize so much of our culture. Even though it is situated some time before I was born, I can still picture these scenes in the present. I also love the strong woman in the book, that take matters in their own hand. I love playing domino, so it was nice reading about how someone thinks during the game.

If you can get the English version, Double Play, you must, must, must read it. That also goes for those of you who can read Dutch. It is one of the most compelling novels I've ever read.

Set in 1960's Curacao, the plot revolves around a weekly game of dominoes that the four main charactersThe four main characters

This is my World Tour book for Curaçao in the Netherlands Antilles. It is about a marathon dominoes tournament. That does not sound amazing, does it, but within that framework there is a lot more going on.
It is another book I did not complete due to other commitments and another I will return to.

I read this book two years after I've lived on the island of Curaçao for 7 months, and I love how realistic this book is. Yes, there are bountylike beaches, but the culture of the people is very specific. I can;t describe it, Arion did.

Not my favorite book, but wasn't THAT bad either. Even though the part about politics bored me to death.

Briljant boek.
