"If you don't believe in dragons, / It is curiously true / That the dragons you disparage / Choose to not to believe in you," matter-of-factly claims America's premiere children's poet Jack Prelutsky. Dragons aren't all the same, of course--some are amiable, some are disconsolate, and some are downright nasty. Here Prelutsky, who has written over 30 books of poet...more

I found this by accident when searching for children's books illustrated by Peter Sis (a Czech) to send to a friend living in the Czech Republic. Of course, I had to read it for myself to determine whether to add it to the Christmas lists for other children.

The poetry would be lovely all on its own, but it's just amazing when paired with the crazy illustrations. The sample poem on the Goodreads book page is a good example of the rhythm and language of the poetry, but is one of the ...more

This book is the only thing my son asked me to get him for Christmas; he had read it at school and written down the title and author name on a scrap of paper. (How could I NOT get it for him??!) I couldn't find it anywhere and had to order it from Amazon, and it didn't arrive until five days *after* Christmas...

The poems employ a surprisingly robust vocabulary and range in length (the shortest is just four lines), and all tell a story of dragon life, often with humor in the vein of S...more

For the read-aloud, I chose a few poems from the Prelusky book, as I had a group of 4-year-olds who I thought would enjoy dragons. They seemed to enjoy them a great deal, particularly as the illustrations enhance the poems so much. For example, in “I am my Master’s Dragon” we used the illustration (of a dragon flying in the moonlight) to figure out why the dragon in the poem was so sad. Since it has been raining so much, we finished with “My dragon’s been disconsolate” and figured out what di...more

I saw this book at the PA Renaissance Faire on Sunday and picked it up because I love dragons. I collect dragon statues, have honestly not read many dragon stories, but I was pleasantly surprised with this book full of rhyming poetry. The woman at the Faire’s “Scriptorium” (book store) said her favorite poem was called Nasty Little DragonSong, and that is definitely up there with some of my favorites too. It is hard to choose but I think my favorite is this one.

Why: from the summary: " Prelutsky, who has written over 30 books of poetry for children, turns his considerable talents to the subject of dragons--a secret dragon, a thunder dragon, a mechanical dragon, even a lazy dragon who likes to sleep all day. The 17 poems range from the whimsical to the scary, but all reflect Prelutsky's incomparable flair for rhythm and humor."

this was one of my son's favorites around third grade...we always had to read at least one poem from it at bedtime and the whole book at least once every other week. Really loops into a child's sense of the possibility of wonder.

A poem book that is about dragons. Most of them are pretty funny and written for kids. The art work is also done very well and complements and goes along with the words of the poems very nice.
Kelli
This is the CUTEST book of poetry ever! It's meant for kids, but I love it so much I'm making my high school students make their own dragon book in January when we study poetry!
Eden
What a fun book of Dragon poems. I greatly enjoyed this and probably my favorite poem is They Once Believed In Dragons.

The only problem with this book is it wasn't long enough.

Z pulled this one off the shelves for a re-visit last night. We had forgotten how much fun it is to scream out Boom the Thunder Dragon in unison.

A birthday gift from my home base teacher Vicki Smith when I did my student teaching. My first introduction to Jack Prelutsky's poetry.

I will always extend our storytime by one book, if this is it. These seventeen poems are a read aloud dream. They feel great in the mouth, evoke a good range of moods and emotion and end with a rousing glint of intrigue that brings the reading to a perfect close.
