I think there’s truly something magical about a book if you can re-read it multiple times and still be enamored with the story, characters, and writing. Most, if not all, of Linda Howard’s books are like that for me but the one I’ve re-read the most is this book. Set in the wild & dangerous time period after the Civil War, The Touch of Fire is a captivating western romance about two individuals striving to belong and how they discover a love that is found in the most unexpected of p
The touch of fire, by Linda Howard, is a historical western set in the years following the conclusion of the American Civil War. The author successfully sets up the plot of an injured ex -soldier running from the law and the doctor he kidnaps high up in the mountains to tend to his injury. The story was very well executed as a captor-captive romance up until the halfway mark. In my opinion, it should have ended there, and remained a novella focused on romance.

Instead, the plot took a turn for th

4 Stars! Not sure that I liked the set-up in the beginning, but then it came around nicely, and was quite enjoyable!

Don't know how I missed this Linda Howard book, but I'm glad I finally got a chance to read it. I love her older stuff and although this wasn't one of her best, it was still a memorable read.

I love Linda Howard but this old western romance was not only not-so-engaging but was also off in quite a few ways and I couldn’t get past that. The whole premise of a hardened outlaw H on the run from law and bounty hunters, getting shot and abducting the h, a doctor to patch him up, had me happily intrigued and rubbing my hands in anticipation. But it dint take long for that iffy feeling to settle in, and nothing happened to really alleviate it as I read on..

I think this is the first historical romance I've read by Linda Howard. It was okay for me. A pretty standard "falling for her kidnapper" story.

Annie Parker learned medicine at her father's knee. She loved helping people and wanted to go to school to be a doctor. But it was something a woman just did not do. She persevered, though, and went to medical school. Then she moved to a remote western town where people would actually let a woman treat them. One night outlaw Rafe McCay ends up in her off
Updated today, because I listened to audio by Natalie Ross. Superb! A 5-star narration.

Compared to 1870, guess how much $100 grand would be worth today? (view spoiler)

4.25 stars for this erotic historical suspense.
It's fiction, but based on cited sources, Howard speculates on the missing Confederate gold (the Treasury was "misplaced" and never recovered after the Civil War). Her story involves several historical figu
Rafe an outlaw kidnaps a doctor, Annie to treat his wounds. They fall in love and together they set out to clear his name! It is always amazing reading about an alpha brooding male falling for a sweet intelligent woman! Romantic book with lovable characters!

Stockholm Syndrome? Well, maybe but it was a great story for the first 3/4s. It slowed down after a while and ended well but it seemed like it lagged for a bit. I liked the strong characters. Set in the old West in Arizona territory. Annie Parker, a woman doctor, is kidnapped by Rafe McCay, a wanted man, being chased by a bounty hunter.
Wow just Wow . I will take a while before I start reading any new book or any book.
Linda Howard is the Queen, how can she make a strong sweet lovely plot ??? Love Oh Sweet Love yes that was how I felt while reading it and after I finished SIGH. I still feel good no great .

Highly Recommended.

Poor writing (e.g. many instances of "..., for she frequently had to travel..." Overly formal and archaic in comparison to the tone of the rest of her text. Also many instances of the author obviously conveying historical and situational context using characters as mouthpieces, a little clumsy. E.g. a distraught, grieving character exclaiming, "He was only about seven-years-old!") Good physical descriptions though.

Solid, interesting hero. Heroine was a mite too perfect for my tastes. Hero was ve
Caution: minor spoilers ahead. Tread at your own peril.

I should have loved this book, since it contains a lot of the elements I enjoy in a romance:
• Historical + western + romance. As the saying goes, you had me at hello
• A well-liked author. The Mackenzie collection and Mr. Perfect are among my favorite reads from 2012
• A brooding hero, and an outlaw to boot.
• A lady doctor, from whom backbone and some maturity is expected. I loved Dr. Quinn TV show back in the 90s.
• An enemy-to-lovers storyli
I got to page 182 when I just had to stop - the book wasn't totally horrible but I didn't like it. I didn't hate or love, like or dislike either Annie or Rafe, which in a romance I need to like at least one of them to keep reading. Annie was a personality that changed; one second she's a strong, independent woman, the next a simpering, dependent, and insecure girl. I hate when authors make characters go from one extreme to another like that. The plot and pacing were rather slow and not that inte ...more

It's actually more like 4.5*.
I absolutely loved the beginning and the days spent in the cabin. I was somewhat turned off by the slight supernatural element which I found completely uncalled for and didn't actually add anything in the story. Overall a great read and a keeper.
Set in the 1870's in the southwest Arizona Territory, The Touch of Fire is a fantastic, hot romance and suspense the kind that only Linda Howard can write. She can make the world of the 1870's come alive in a way that other authors can only envy. At the heart of the story is the love of a woman doctor and an outlaw. The story takes its' time getting moving, but then it really takes off.

Annie is a female doctor at a time when it just wasn't done. She is in a mining town in the Arizona Territory a

I listened to the unabridged audiobook. I don't like abridged audiobooks. I might have made an exception with this one. I felt this book had split personality disorder. To me, the three "acts" of this book were from three very different book plots. The kidnapping section, the mystical healing hands section, and the clearing the name of the wrongly accused section. I wish she would have stayed with one of them. I even felt the characters behaved differently in each one. I was left disappointed by ...more

Now this a rare romance book I can read and would want to read AGAIN. Its enjoyable because there is more to the story than just passion and lust all over the place, although those are not a bad thing. I wanted to read this after a friend on Goodreads posted her rereading of it. I would want to read more of her books.

hmmm.. I don't even know why I finished this book. I found the writing awkward at parts and the storyline wasn't even compelling. perhaps that is a review of me that I didn't just move on? there is one partial storyline where the heroine is noted as a healer, as in "healer". that probably could have been cool. other than that, classic fall for the kidnapper piece. nature scene descriptions were pretty good.

Enjoyable western. Most of it was a nice story but the ending was excellent, very satisfying.

This is, in my opinion, Linda's best Historical Romance. As the story unfolds, both characters develope and change for the better. I did not find this 'too rough' or 'cruel' as has been noted elsewhere. For the most part, both main characters act and re-act believably for the time period, the 19th Century. Again one can not expect 21st Century behavior from people living in the 19th Century.

This book had a rocky start, in my opinion, but it was a really fun read and I liked how it ended. The romance part of the book was a little weird at the beginning, and toward the end the book seems to change from a romance book to an adventure book. I am more interested in romance than the adventure of trying to prove the hero innocent (which takes up a lot of the ending), which is why I didn't rate it as high.

For me the romance was a little strange; (view spoiler)

Namun ketika muncul adegan cara Annie mengobati balita suku apache, kok mood langsung down yah. Cara menggambarkannya terlalu berlebihan n gak masuk akal, walo gw ngerti memang ada org" tertentu yang memiliki kelebihan dalam menyembuhkan berbagai penyakit, tapi gak ha ...more

I really like the first half of the book, but I sort of lost interest with the second half. Plus there is a sort of supernatural aspect thrown in that I was surprised with. Generally I don't like being surprised with the supernatural. Rafe was great I thought in the beginning, but then I felt like he was only so-so in the end...not fantastic, not horrible...just sort of in the middle. There were times I felt he could have been a little bit more sensitive to Annie's needs. So, 3.5 for the first h ...more
