This book starts out innocently enough. Deborah, a divorced mother of two picks up her teen-aged daughter, Grace, from a friend's house after what was supposed to be a night of studying. But Deborah is understandably perturbed when she arrives and finds not just three girls studying, but eight kids (4 boys, 4 girls) having what appears to be a fun time (no parents in sight). As the two women drive home on a a rainy night where visibility is nil, they argue about what Deborah's perceives and G...more

"Expectations are a powerful motivational tool"
3.5 stars. The Secret Between Us, a novel by Barbara Delinsky, defines "a fast read." The writing is clearly the effort of a pro and flows from page to page with lots of dialog and little description or prolonged prose. The storytelling is first rate. I was riveted.

The main character, a woman named Barbara, is likeable and believable. She's a divorced mother of two, a small-town doctor. In the opening pages, s...more

The Secret Between Us by Barbara Delinksy is truthfully painful. A good novel but with so much guilt that you really start to feel like it's you in the story. It's a can't put down book til the end so that you can see if things come out for better or worse.

Deborah Monroe is mom, daughter, sister, ex-wife, and prominent town doctor to a quiet little town in New England. Highly respected and loved, independent, honest to a fault has her life upturned by one little incident. Oh, is it littl...more

Okay. I picked up this book because I was looking for a new author like Jodi Picoult. This book was a quick read but dragged at times. I kept reading because I was intrigued by the topic and the relationships. A daugter kills a man while driving with her mother on a rainy night. The mother does not correct the police when they assume that the mother was driving. Made me wonder if I would do the same. Also, it reminded us how a lie can impact your life and how the truth can set up free.

A pleasant surprise. It wasn't challenging reading, but a good story that kept my interest. Would be good for a vacation book or beach book. Similar to Piccoult's style - but much better character development.

I'm not done yet, but enjoying the book. It's easy reading. I got the book from the publisher as part of a buzz campaign through BuzzAgent.com I've been telling people that I know are interested in this genre of books about this book as well as the author. I thought at first that I wo...more

I love Barbara Delinsky. I read all her books. They are stories that you can relate to or will be able to eventually relate to. I always said she was a writer for women. And she is; but she is also a writer for our lives.
This book was amazing. There is something in it for everybody. How one omission can snowball. How living with guilt can make you not like yourself. The cleansing feeling you get with telling the truth. How to deal with anger, hurt & love.
A fantastic book, like all of Bar...more

I really liked the idea for this book. A mother and Daughter are driving together on a rainy night. The daughter hits a man, who ends up being her history teacher. He later dies in the hospital, but the mother covers for her daughter and takes the blame. Sounds pretty interesting right? Well, the book was only half about that, it dealt a lot with the mother's issues with her ex-husband, alcoholic father and her son's health problems. It was not a bad book, but it wasn't what I expected. H...more

This wasn't bad per se, but I didn't particularly like it. The story was decent, but some of it was a bit too Lifetime-movie-esque for me. Does the protagonist really have to fall in love with the brother of the man she & her daughter ran over? Is it really necessary for her son to have this terrible medical problem? And how many are the characters going to have the same arguments with each other? Sometimes in these cases the writing can make up for a kind of blah plot, but I didn't think t...more

THE SECRET BETWEEN US deals with the interactions of family. How far a mother will go to protect her child, how a child reacts to knowing they've done something that can never be taken back. It's not a bad story, but it wasn't as fully evolved as I would have liked it to be.

The main problem, for me, was the ending, which I saw as a total cop-out. In the end, the resolutions came too easily, and in ways that made everyone turn out to be a good guy. Things rarely work this way in real life.

A teenage girl is driving herself and her mother home during a rainstorm when they hit a man jogging beside the road. When the police arrive they assume that the mother was the one behind the wheel and she chooses not to correct them. The remainder of the story evolves out of this one moment. There are also a lot of little side stories that got a little annoying to me as it got a little ridiculous in my opinion that every single character in the book had to have some major crisis going on in ...more

I read books by Barbara Delinsky when I need a break from "heavier" books. I've ended up enjoying some of other light fare. This one wasn't one of my favorites. It's an interesting premise: a young girl with a driver's permit and her mother hit a man with their car while the young girl is driving. The mom ends up pretending she was driving. The book deals with the fallout from that. The problem is the young girl. Having teenagers myself, I just didn't buy some of the twists and tur...more

I had a hard time starting the book because the first few chapters seemed to be trying repetitively to convey the scenario. Then the next couple chapters had the protagonist makings some bad choices that I felt like she was smart enough to avoid. However, the last two-thirds of the book was very engrossing. Once the scene was set and the necessary elements introduced, I liked the way the characters learned from the events.

I have to admit that I ended up skimming the last few pages when I ...more

After Deborah Monroe picks up her sixteen-year-old daughter, Grace, from a party, they are driving home when their car hits a man in the dark. Although Grace was at the wheel, Deborah sends her home, insistent on facing the police alone. Her decision then turns into a deception which takes on a life of its own, threatening their family, as well as the special bond between mother and daughter.

Once again Delinsky has written a superbly crafted book, perfectly targeted to reading groups and fan...more

A daughter accidentally hits a man with a car in a terrible rainstorm, and the man dies. The mother, who was in the passenger seat, sends the daughter home and decides to continue misleading authorities when they all assume she was driving. This secret becomes more toxic to the people who keep it as the story unfolds, but no one seems to know how to extricate themselves gracefully from the situation. An interesting study into the lies people tell, why they tell them, and why they continue to ...more

this is the second Delinsky book I've read, and while I liked Family Tree better, this is decent. It certainly gives lots of room for discussion--it would be a great book club book (as I think most her books would). She's not as "tight" an author as say, Grisham, who I never feel like is trying to hard or leaves gaps or inprobablities in the plot, but I do like her and she makes you think. And, I did read the book in less than a day, so it must have been pretty good!

It is an easy read. I received an advance copy as a BzzAgent and it took a night to read. It is enjoyable and easy to understand. One of Delinsky's best books. It is scheduled to be released Jan. 22nd 2008. It would make an interesting book for any bookclub interested in reading about families and how they interact. If you would like I have a bookclub guide with questions that I would be happy to share. Great book to read on a plane..or when traveling.

Not a page turner by any means, but still an OK summer book. It is the story about a mother/daughter relationship that is more than strained after they experience a car accident together. The mother takes the blame for her daughter's driving and things start to go downhill. The tsk tsk moment for me was when the author confused the sports of track and cross country. Anyone with a runner in the family knows there are no 800meter runs in cross country!!

Intersting topic of how one lie to protect your daughter can actually ruin everthing. Coming clean pays off, but it's painful process. Sub-storlyline about the son's eyesight didn't really have a point. I kept waiting for it, but nothing. So why did the author bother to spend so much time on it? The family dynamics could have been written a little better and the relationship with the victims brother was weird. A mediocore read.

This is a book that I started and put down for a few weeks and then just figured I would finish it during dinner at work this week. I've never read a book by Barbara Delinsky but I can see why readers like her: her characters are easy to relate to with problems that many of us experience like teens who don't want to talk with their parents, widowed parents who are trying to cope and feelings of hurt and resentment over divorce.
