The Star-Spangled Banner
Due to careful research, Spier's artwork depicts "the dawn's early light" and "the rocket's red glare" with remarkable authenticity and detail in this celebratory book. Among the highlights: a brief history of the anthem, a reproduction of Francis Scott Key's original manuscript, music for guitar and piano chords and many photographs.

The strains of America's National Anthem are no doubt familiar to most American children, but this patriotic tribute by Peter Spier provides compelling visual interpretations for the song. Alternating between well-researched historical vignettes and modern American scenes, Spier illustrates verses one, three, and four of our anthem, line by line. An afterword includes a historic description of the events leading up to our National Anthem's writing, with photo of the original manuscript penned by...more

Gorgeous illustrations accompany three of the verses of the Star Spangled Banner, written by Francis Scott Key. The illustrations span hundreds of years of American history and depict locations far and wide. We borrowed this book from our local library as part of a kit that includes an audio CD with ISBN 155592896X. We really enjoyed listening to the music (sung by Aretha Franklin and the U.S.M.A. West Point Glee Club) and some additional information narrated by Rex Robbins as we followed along...more
The Star-Spangled Banner would be a great book to introduce children to our Nation's national anthem. The book could be used in an introduction in a music class where the students can look at pictures while the words are being read to them. This is turn will make it more meaningful for all the children in the classroom. This book could also be used to talk about what the American flag really stands for and what each star and stripe represent on the American flag.

It has been some time since I last read this book but I remember thinking that I came away with a better understanding of the song seeing it with the corresponding illustrations. The drawings are quite good and very eye catchings. This is a great way to introduce the US national anthem to a young child.
This is an awesome picture book with drawings to match the verses of the Star Spangled Banner. The end of the book has a short section that explains the war of 1812 and how the song was written. Excellent. My boys loved it. I got a little teary eyed myself as we went through it. Great book for history lovers.
