The Missing is a contemporary romantic suspense/thriller. Taige, the biracial beauty of a heroine, has psychic abilities and uses them to save lives in the Alabama gulf vacation community that she considers home. Her parents are deceased, so we begin the story with Taige as a teen living with her crazy preacher Uncle that verbally, and at one point, physically abused Taige because he believed she was doing the devil's work by using her gift. When the rich and handsome teen boy Cullen begins spending his summers in her gulf community, Taige and Cullen fall in love. The story quickly progresses as each chapter indicates a new summer. Shiloh Walker doesn’t disappoint and she crafts her usual sweet but smokin’ hot love scenes.

When Taige fails to foresee the death someone Cullen holds dear, Cullen lashes out – things end very bad for the teen romance – and the repercussions of that goodbye are more devastating than either one of them could imagine.

The story fast forwards a decade and Taige is now working as a consultant for the FBI, using her talent to find missing children. The love of her life – Cullen - has never forgotten Taige. In fact, the 2 have been sharing very intense dreams about each other during all their years apart. Cullen’s a widowed single father now. And when his daughter gets kidnapped by a very dark, child serial killer, guess who Cullen immediately runs to? The hunt for the serial killer through the minds of his victims...the intense and sensual reconnection of a deep, lost love...I loved this story! It was dark, sexy, captivating and my favorite Shiloh Walker read thus far. I think The Missing would make an excellent movie and I can’t recommend it enough. Shiloh Walker recently announced that she's also writing the story of Taige's friend who we met in The Missing (one of the other female psychics working for the FBI), so I guess this book is no longer a stand-alone :)(less)

It's no surprise that I've got a thing for the south. It's what makes me fangirl over a lot of Sandra Brown's books. I love the heat. The sticky seduction of it. That feeling was captured here as we watch Taige, the local psychic girl who hates the attention she gets when she gets a vision in time to save someone in the throes of danger. The visions are unpredictable, sometimes coming way after the fact, and sometimes years before the actual event takes place. Because of this, and that her parents are dead and she's stuck with an uncle that wants to save her from the devil by beating it out of her, she's a loner in a town of tourists. One of those tourists is the charming, and gorgeous but decent Cullen Morgan. He watches as she runs after saving a boy, and to him she's the vision of some mermaid and he's hooked. He saves her one night and it's impossible to walk away. So for a few years he's there every summer, and every summer they fall deeper in desperate love. Until something tragic happens. Something Taige didn't see in time. And Cullen, in his rage and sadness, can't see past that and makes the mistake of turning his back on Taige.

Twelve years pass and now Cullen is a widow with a daughter who is abducted. He makes his way back to the shores of Alabama, and there he finds that the girl has grown up into a fierce woman. The tension between these two is ridiculous. These two facing off, with the years and dirty dreams that may not have been one-sided between them, is like standing out on the porch on a muggy day and the fan is going too slow, the sweet tea next to you is sweating as hard as you, and your heart is beating too fast in your chest. Maybe something bluesy and dirty is playing in the background. There are ways to write sexual tension that are cheesy and predictable. This book was how to write it to knock the wind out of someone.

I loved Cullen and I loved Taige and most importantly I believed everything about them. Taige was tough and tired, but she loved so fiercely that she couldn't contain it. Cullen ached for her and became a broken beast when his daughter was abducted. The action kept a great pace, the mystery surprised the crap out of me, the romance was pitch perfect, and all of it has me searching out everything this author has written. (less)

He just can't get over the fact that she didn't get some psychic vision in time and he blames her for not saving his mother. So they don't speak for 12 years. Then his daughter is kidnapped and he needs Taige to save her.

I liked the first section of the book far better than the rest. While I was reading to find out how Cullen dumped Taige, I couldn't put it down. Then it got less interesting as it went to the present.

I didn't like that Taige forgave Cullen so easily for what he had done to her. I mean, he was brutal about the whole thing. Maybe it had been 12 years earlier but I know that I would not have been so quick to forgive that kind of behavior.

The book was pretty short and I didn't think the characters were as developed as they could have been. The girl was barely kidnapped before they found her with no problems at all. Of course, the book was really about the two people getting back together, but the mystery was a little weak. I never could tell if the clues in the book were that good or if it was just so predictable, but I figured out the whole thing by the middle of the book. I knew in the beginning that the dream she had of the girl would be the daughter (no big surprise because the back tells as much) and I knew when they found the girl that Taige's uncle would be the killer. It was confirmed for me when he randomly popped back up in the book when she was an adult.

Okay. I picked this up at a bargain book store during the Hay-on-Wye festival last year. It was £2 so I figured, “Why not?” Oh, and it was shelved under the YA banner.

It was miss shelved!

I had barely bent the spine of this one before the narrative took a turn for the hot 'n' steamy! This is definitely for more mature readers. It's not filth or anything, just an enjoyably risqué crime/romance/paranormal read.

Sometimes I just browse my local library’s shelves and peruse the backs and dust jackets of random books and check a few out. Shiloh Walker‘s The Missing is one of those books I came across. It had an intriguing premise and I was in the mood for a story that had a little romance in it after reading a number of novels that were of quite a different persuasion.

It had an intriguing premise and I was in the mood for a story that had a little romance in it after reading a number of novels that were of quite a different persuasion.

Once I got into it–and it didn’t take too long–I definitely found The Missing to be a page turner, although I can also deem it forgettable. And though it was classified in the fiction section at my local library I feel like it almost belongs more to the romance categorization. The story is not inundated with the purpley prose I assume so common in the romance genre, but there is a sprinkling of that in there. Strangely, one of the most prevalent thoughts I had upon completing this book was how highly sexualized it was. There’s a more than a few sex scenes in the book and they do get a bit explicit and that is not something I often encounter in the things I read. Sex scenes are usually brief or introspective, perhaps slightly nebulous or merely suggestive. Not so descriptive and capturing the blow-by-blow (minds out of the gutter, people!) such as this novel does. And I have to admit, when I read “cock” it makes me think of erotica, as it is a word that fits in swell in that genre–and maybe romance, too, though I haven’t really read much romance to know for sure–so it sorts of takes me out of a story I am trying to take more seriously than some light porn.

Overall, the prose is fluid and unabashed. A benefit to the novel is its third person perspective. You get a large dose of Taige and a sampling from the other characters, most notably Cullen. It makes the narrative’s scope widen and the implications of events and their effects on the characters more widely understood than if it were only focusing on the singular Taige instead. There is a somewhat minor mystery at the core of the story–the catalyst that ignites the reunion of Taige and Cullen–but I am afraid it is so absolutely predictable that I’m not sure if it was meant to a real mystery at all. But I suppose that’s all irrelevant because in the end, this is a story about a love so intense it survives time and guilt and tragedy. And in that respect, it is a successfully executed story.

However, one of its shortcomings is Cullen. He feels very underdeveloped to me. Even now, though I only finished the book about two weeks ago, I can’t get a clear sense of him. The only things that stand out are that he is a dedicated father and is pining for Paige. He doesn’t have many distinguishing characters I can recall, neither physically nor psychologically. He could be any guy. Taige, on the other hand, is strong and willful and compelling. And because we are introduced to her as a teenager and witness the grief and horror her gift supplies, she is easy to sympathize with and root for.

A second slight failure is the poor attention to the way the law works and how crime is investigated. But because Taige is a psychic guided by her sixth sense, you can give into suspension of disbelief and accept what liberties the writer has taken to tell her story.

A good read. I don’t know if it is a book I will remember much about as time goes by, but I was entertained and intrigued well enough through the journey. I may give the author another go around at some point.(less)

There are other characters with psychic abilities as well. This was a nicely done story with some interesting plot twists and events.

I noticed one reviewer found fault with the story as not being realistic regarding police procedures. That didn’t bother me. It’s probable that the psychic parts are also not that realistic. As far as I’m concerned, suspending belief is ok. I’m in this for the entertainment and for a fun escape, which it provided.

STORY BRIEF WITH SOME SPOILERS:
Cullen is a rich kid whose family spends summers at their vacation home, located in a gulf coast Alabama tourist town. Taige’s parents died when she was young. She lives with an abusive uncle. When Taige is 15, Cullen saves her from an attempted rape. They develop a relationship over the next few summers. Cullen knows Taige has psychic abilities. When Taige is 19, Cullen’s mother is violently murdered. Cullen is angry and breaks up with Taige. He felt Taige should have known about the murder in advance to help prevent it. He was mad that she never tried to control or develop her abilities. He claimed she passively reacted to them instead of actively used them. Because of Cullen’s accusation, Taige then begins to actively use her abilities, develop greater control over them and works with the FBI. Cullen marries Kim who dies giving birth to their daughter Jilly. Several years later Jilly is kidnapped. Cullen hasn’t seen Taige for 12 years, but goes to her asking for her help to find Jilly.

This was an odd little story which I think is very emotional and dark.

I found this book from one of Cecile’s (All I Want And More) major buying spree at Borders and thought I would give it a try. Shiloh Walker’s style is one that I love. There is no on the fence with her books- you either love them or hate them and I most certainly am loving THE MISSING.

Taige is a psychic and has been ever since childhood. With a whole lot going wrong for her growing up – there was really only two right’s going for her - her guardian angels that watched over her and Cullen Morgan – the boy from her summer.

Morgan was unlike all the other boys of summer who wanted only to get into her pants – he made a space for Taige in his life and there wasn’t a time when she was not at the forefront of his mind. When an unimaginable horror happens in Cullen’s life he lashes out and pushes Taige away from him.

Gone but not forgotten is Cullen’s litany years later when he has to literally outrace the authorities to get to Taige – because Taige is the only person that can make sense of what's happening and the only person he can trust to find his precious daughter. Both Cullen and Taige have to work together and with the history they have – it soon became the battle of wills to get through each day without falling into each others arms, especially when one isn’t playing fair.

I found the setting and the pace of this book not only remarkable but quite a balance – with psychic related books, the pace can fluctuate depending on where the plot of the book takes them. With THE MISSING it was really edge of your seat stuff, I read this in one go – because I was not going to miss out on a word due to something as simply as sleep…

The support cast are positively all over the place – from the kind hearted guardian angels, the handler who felt it was his duty to corral all the psychic talent he could find, to the spawn of the devil who was evil personified.

I must admit as much as I love Ms. Walkers books – they are not easy reads, they deal with something's we probably would rather not think exist as well as her protags are known to have to walk through the fire so to speak and Cullen and Taige are sorely tested in THE MISSING.

There was a good amount of smut in this book – but very low keyed – with a lot of innuendo between the protags. I was truly caught up in this book – the loving, the hating, the wanting, the sacrifices and the redemption. Everything came full circle in this book and as much as this was an emotional ride for me – I came out on the other side with a healthy respect for Ms. Walkers writing.(less)

I inadvertently bought The Departed without knowing that it was a part of a series. I didn't want it to be BDB all over again where I bought the eighth book of the series first without realizing that there were already seven books published ahead of it. I had to make sure I wasn't going to make the same mistake again. The synopsis of the book sounded fantastic so I ordered it right away. I had high hopes that its entirety would just be as gripping and you know what? I had high hopes that its entirety would just be as gripping and you know what? The Missing did not disappoint. I was hooked from the very first sentence.

I'm not going to bother you with my own interpretation of the blurb. If the little summary of this book didn't pique your interest at all, then this book might not be for you. I, on the other hand, have always had a penchant for stories of destined love - not the paranormal type of destiny where your past lives were connected but just two people who are just meant to be type of love. Cullen and Taige had that kind and it's a double win because their story spanned over the years with most of them spent in separation. Yet, through all the years the connection between them wasn't severed. Their minds are attuned to each other by way of strange bouts of visitations through their dreams.

This book dealt with a lot of disturbing, dark themes. Be prepared to read some pretty uncomfortable, distressing situations. There were also a lot of gore and some pretty explicit sexual scenes. I haven't read any of Shiloh Walker's work but I do have some of her books. I didn't realize they were on the side of erotica until I read this (sorry! I've been buried in YA books that I'm unfamiliar with Shiloh's work). By the time I finished The Missing, Ms. Walker have garnered another fan in me.

Although Taige's ability is the major draw of this book, I'm still resolved that the riveting romance was the first and foremost. I enjoyed reading about their love, heartbreak and eventual reunion. I always found third person POV to be quite tasking that I sometimes find myself bored with a story told in this method. This book, however, had my full attention. Because it's a psychological thriller, I found myself focused on every single word. I didn't want to miss a thing and I wanted to be able to solve the murders. The only complaint I have is the lack of suspects, which I think is an important element to a good mystery novel. In here, the eventual killer was someone I did not suspect just because there wasn't any clue at all that he was the one doing the kidnappings and killings. You can argue that this is the best attribute of a mystery novel but I digress. It felt like this aspect was not developed properly.

In summary, The Missing was a fantastic read. It's got an enthralling romance and gripping suspense that will have you by the nose until you get to the end of the story. The only thing that worries me is the lag of time between publication. This was published in 2008 and its sequel was just recently released. I don't think I have the patience to wait that long!(less)

Sixteen-year-old Taige Branch is cursed. Her whole life Taige has been able to predict death and feel spirits. Walker creates an amazing book, once again. I love her book because she's able to create brilliant, broken characters and yet let them have their happily ever after.

It actually gets a 3.5. For some reason, I didn't like it as much as The Departed. Maybe had I read this one first, I would have liked it more? Hm. Over the first 50 pages all reservations I had disappeared and I was smitten. Shiloh Walker wrote them in such a sweet, yet realistic courtship it was impossible not to fall in love with the pair. She then went on to take my heart, rip it out of my chest and stomp on it. Shiloh Walker is evil, in the way all good tragedy writers are. She made me cry. There I admitted it. Taige and Cullen were so perfect for each other, yet their relationship takes such a heartbreaking turn. I hated it and I loved it. I couldn’t put it down once I got to that point. I would have liked to see Taige drag Cullen around by his “you know what” a bit to make him suffer, but that could just be the evil bitch in me talking.

The suspense of The Missing was haunting and readers are given enough clues to figure out bits and pieces here and there, yet I didn’t have an clear hunch about the bad guy until three quarters of the way through. I think portions of the missing children plot could have been prolonged and I would have enjoyed seeing Taige and Cullen’s relationship change during that hardship, but overall the story worked well as it was.

The only annoyance I had were the dreams Taige and Cullen shared. I knew where that subplot was going and I just couldn’t get on that train. It felt too easy and neither of them seemed like the kind to not face their feelings and be honest with each other. In the end I think the couple really needed a knock down, drag out, all things on the table, tupperware thrown at your head type of discussion and I felt shorted that because of the dreams. It didn’t annoy me enough to not love the book, but I would be a slacker blogger if I didn’t mention it.

The Missing is a haunting and emotional story you will not want to put down once you start it. Clear off your schedule for the day, bake some brownies, grab a box of tissues and curl up with some Shiloh Walker. You won’t regret it, I promise. (less)

In The Missing we meet Taige in her teenage years. She already suffered a lot and still does most of the time. Not only does she hear and see monstrous things happening but she also has to survive the attention of her extremely religious uncle who believes she is the spawn of Satan. Her life isn't as it should be for a teenage girl. Not much makes her life good. She can escape into the haven of Rose's and Dante's love from time to time but she has to go back to her uncle from hell, too. My heart bled for Taige and as the story went on that only intensified.

We also meet Cullen (anyone else has to think of Twilight every time...). He is a nice boy with rich parents but he still stands with his both feet on the ground. He had a crush on Taige since the first time he saw her and she just won't leave his thought alone. He is positively smitten and searches for a way to get in touch. When he finally earns her attention it is on a rather life threatening situation and since that moment these 2 are glued together. I loved the way their relationship developed. It was so sweet and lovely- I really hoped for a HEA for them. But if you read the Blurb you know that it didn't went this way. When Cullen's mom is murdered every thing changes. He says some really really mean things and behaves like a total jerk. I would have loved to slap him silly for that. No matter what happens you should NEVER do something like this. When someone opens up to you that much you should never use that information to hurt that person. Every thing he said was like a death blow to Taige and I would have never looked at him again after that. But she does (Taige is definitely way nicer than me).

The next part of the book takes place 12 years after that last big fight. Cullen has a daughter and Taige works for the FBI and the police as a psychic bloodhound. Taige can't really cope with this job. It drains her emotionally and every new case kills a bit of herself. She is empty inside and tries to escape her visions and dreams through alcohol. Taige doesn't blame Cullen for that but I totally do.
When Cullen's daughter is kidnapped they decide to work together to get her back and bring justice to the monster who did that to her.

As you can see this book is full of action. Everything happens real fast and sometimes it was just a bit too much for me. Not the amount of the action but I thought it was a bit too much what happened to our couple through the whole book. How can someone survive this? I honestly don't know. I like the pace of the story though. I read the last half of the book in one session- I was tired like hell but I couldn't put it down. The suspense is good but I already knew how the bad guy was in the middle of the book. But I was still under the ban of Shiloh's writing.

I really liked how these 2 rediscovered their love for each other. It was obvious really quick that they are meant for reach other but I can't blame Taige to be a bit cautious after their history together. It was nice to see a couple that really cared for each other and that not everything was focused on the sexual attraction and sex.
They gave each other so much comfort and honest love- just wonderful.

There was another thing I noticed. I recently read No Longer Mine also by Shiloh Walker and The Missing really reminded me of that story. I'm not sure if it's just Mrs. Walker's writing style or the story but both books have a bit of the same feel.

The Missing is a good romantic suspense (with paranormal elements) about love, devotion, trust and faith. If you like your books emotional this is definitely the right book for you.

This is the first book I've read that was recommended by my state library's monthly readers advisory emails and I really enjoyed it. This is my third book by Shiloh Walker, and once again, she does not disappoint.

We first meet Taige Branch and Cullen Morgen as teenagers, when Cullen and his parents holiday at the beach side town where Taige lives. Taige, as with many of Walker's characters, has had a tough life. Her parents died when she was young and she was sent to live with her uncle, who mistreated her. I really liked this book. It was nice to read a "paranormal" style book that is not vampires, wereanimals, fae, etc. I really liked the psychic aspect of the characters. I loved the story between Taige and Cullen, though Cullen was an ass for a little bit. He made me really mad, but I think I understand, though that does not make it right. I will definitely recommend this book to others.

I don't normally read books where the plot is about missing, abducted, abused or molested children. It is my personal Kryptonite. I relaxed that stricture for this book because a) it was made clear that that plot is off screen for most of the book, not front and center and b) when it does happen as part of the plot the child in question is found pretty quickly and finally, c)I like to support authors who write IR or multicultural romances whenever possible.

This book had some really good elements. First, I like the whole first third of the book where Taige and Cullen meet as teenagers and fall in love over the course of a few summers. It was a sweet courtship and nice first love story for them.

Second, I like the fact that Taige's psychic gift does not desert her when she needs it the most. When Cullen's daughter is kidnapped, she is able to hone in the the child, read her and find her very quickly. I hate it when they make a big deal about fabulous psychic gifts in books and then when it comes time to put the pedal to the metal, the psychic is all wailing how they are drawing a complete blank.

And Taige and Cullen make a great couple with tons of chemistry leaping off the page. Even while Cullen is being a bit of a jerk to Taige after his mother dies and he breaks up with her, you can't help but still feel his pain and hers.

But frankly that was not enough to make me completely love this book. I think the biggest problem was with how tortured Walker made Taige. Not only did she lose both parents but she had to endure living with an abusive uncle who beat her for years until she was old enough to start fighting back. But that isn't all there is more which I won't go into as it constitutes spoiler material. Suffice it to say, Taige can not get a break. There was a point when I said "oh, come ON!"

There is another convention I dearly hate which was in this book as well. Taige and Cullen shared dreams. They did all kinds of stuff together in dreams during the ten years they are apart that they could never do or say in person. I hate when authors use dreams as alternative communication devices. It is a pet peeve of mine.

At any rate it is a quick read and the good does outweigh the not so good.

I liked it, a nice love story with fantasy additions and crime and action. And of course a lot of sex and erotics, more than in most "women" books.
I think this book was good, even better than Nora Roberts' books. It was more catchy and the plot was more plausible and events ran more smoothly for my taste. I could hardly put it away.
