Irja Mattiasdatter was heavy and deformated by illness. People laughed at her and called her names mostly "teasel". Irja had much serious problem: she unhappily loved rich and reckless Tarald, son of baron Dag Meiden and Liv of Ice People. Tarald was interested only in his beautiful cousin Sunniva. But their relationship was threatened by serious consequences because of curse laid on the family.

I highly recommend this book (and the whole series) to everyone who loves fantasy, romance, mystery, the spiritual and family sagas.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Yrja Matiasdatter was young, poor and deformed by illness. People laughed at the girl and called her evil names. Yrja carried a heavy weight of sorrow: she was unhappily in love with the rich Tarald, son of Baron Dag Meiden and Liv of the Ice People.

Kíváncsi vagyok, Tarjei, aki Tengel nyomdokaiba lép, képes lesz-e felnőni a feladath...more

The first half of the book was terrible, but it got better. It is nothing compared to the previous ones.

This is the first book I read in the series, and still one of my absolute favourites. Mostly because I love Yrja to bits, and because old Tengel and Silje are absolutely adorable! This is also the first book in which someone dies from old age, and it's done very well in a way that makes the reader accept this death (and other such deaths to come) as a natural part of the family saga.

Fairly middle of the road considering the way the series bagan. I was a bit diappointed with the end of the book but, I did enjoy Sal's character. Well done. I think what annoyed me the most was the goody-goody attitude of the family with their so-called piety.

Recommends it for: Everyone with an interest in semi historical sagas.
Yrja is a rather strange character but very persistent. This book is so sad yet so happy that I almost cry every single time I read it.
