What a joy this book is! This book is close to perfection for me. I always say I’m a city person, but it is books such as this that leave me yearning for a life lived closer to the land.

I love the illustrations. The cat is so perfect (looking at the birds was perhaps my favorite), but all the illustrations of the family cat warmed my heart. The pictures of all the crops, especially the little vegetables in the non-fiction sections, are just adorable, and informative too. I like how the illustrat

What a nice combination of both fiction and nonfiction! In Lily's Garden, we get to see a year in the life of Lily who lives in Maine. In January, her grandparents send her a box of oranges from California, and the sidebar gives some fascinating facts about oranges! In February, Lily and her father are tapping their maple trees, and the sidebar gives directions for making maple syrup and maple candy. Lily starts her garden seeds indoors in March. She plants them in April and May, and in June she ...more

"Lily's Garden portrays a child who lives within the natural year. Each two-page spread covers one calendar month. On the right page is a narrative of Lily's life planning, managing, and harvesting either her own garden or crops such as blueberries or apples. On the left is a sidebar with more information on the plants (watermelons come from Africa) or activities (harvest festivals around the world) Lily mentions. As with The Rainforest Grew All Around, which also had extras, this material can ...more

I really liked Ray's illustrations, but I liked even better the way each page was labeled by month, beginning with January and ending in December. On the left side of each page is a box with information about various crops, and sometimes a recipe. On the right side is the text of the story of Lily's activities month by month. And each illustration is a double-page spread, with info box and text overlying part of the illustration. Since this book is a little wordy, it will work well with early ...more

I like how this book went to a typical growing year in the East Coast versus California... through correspondence with her grandma and grandpa.
it helps kids see there are different climates at the same time and gives you a really good introduction to the different seasons and recipes and things you can do in each season (like how they make maple syrup or make Zucchini bread or rolls pumpkin seeds etc.)
