A great collection of Marx's writings, from his days as a young man questioning the bases of German law to his later works. I had not read a great deal of Marx before I dove into this collection, but upon reading it I have had a great many of my previously held (and also previously hard to explicate) views confirmed. One of the most interesting things to me is just how greatly Marx's work has seemed to influence the world we live in today, beyond and despite all the venomous rhetoric directed to...more

Something of a resurgence going on with Mr. Marx these days because of the crisis.
So you are ready for Karl Marx? Just so you know, that is something that might take a lifetime. Thus the select writings. To know: His abstract writings can be really hard going, while his earlier writings are a little less tough on your patience.
Every intellectual or quasi-intellectual has to go here. In my mind his conclusions about the necessity of communism are correct, the question is his me...more

Review based on content, not substance. Great collection of his writings. Organized by time period and subject.
Have only read excerpts, but the translation was surprisingly readable for German philosophy, and interesting ideas.
Read the section on Alientated Labor as well as The Communist Manifesto for class. I knew that Marx was incredibly influential in modern Western thought, but I never really realized how much of his work has been echoed by such modern writers as Barbara Ehrenreich. Very cool, very interesting. Wish I had time to read more, but now it's time for a test and then four more readings...

I think Marx might be a closeted capitalist. He is definitely hypocritical and changes his mind on things based on who wrote them and what approach they're using. All around an interesting read and I'm glad I did it.
The best collection of Marx there is.

This was the Marx collection we used in David Schweickart's "Social and Poltical Philosophy" course at Loyola University Chicago. Not all was assigned, but I went through it thoroughly and later became inspired enough to continue with the Collected Works of Marx and Engels, finishing all of the volumes through 1862.
"Not the best selection of Marx's writings, and Engels-free, which is a detriment."--seems like a fair assessment

Excellent collection of excerpts with good introductions by a true Marxian scholar.
I'm not sure I'll ever be finished reading this.
Marx was certainly good at coming up with slogans
Necessary. But you knew that already.

Karl Heinrich Marx was a 19th-century philosopher, political economist, sociologist, humanist, political theorist and revolutionary.
