Beneath the Paving Stones: Situationists and the Beach, May 1968
This anthology comprises 3 pamphlets—The Poverty of Student Life; Totality for Kids; and The Decline and Fall of the Spectacular Commodity Economy plus eyewitness accounts of the Paris May '68 events. Much of the Situationist creed was produced in pamphlet form and these 3 were crucial in creating the Situationist legend. They provide both an introduction to the ideas of t...more

i am in Paris right now and i think about Guy Debord and the Situationist a lot - due that it's MAI 08 - and there are a lot of books on May 68. All the bookstores in Paris has a huge May 68 display. You see, one moment throwing stones then the next it becomes a marketing ploy of sorts. Down below is the original review:
Since I am going to Paris this May, it will be the 40th anniversity of the May 68 uprising. I am very excited to be in a place or location that still has a dreamy affect on the w...more

My True Theory of Gaming
As I’m reading the first essay or pamphlet in this book, about the student riots in Paris ‘68, and also I’ve just gotten a response to a big batch of screenshots I posted for my game, I was thinking about the response one would get (if anyone noticed) in saying you are making a game you not only want to be more like storytelling (though still very much gamelike) but also highly literary, which is a claim I have made recently, and am now making again. It occured to me whil...more

Sous les pavés, la plage. The Situationists are among the most romanticised of the 20thc century's political movements, key players in the May '68 events in Paris, superb critics of urban life (possibly their most influential area of activity where so much of their work has become normalised and taken for granted in more recent post-utopian, post-modern-ish urban studies and politics) but very much subject to the quirks of Guy Debord. The collection draws together several of their most important...more
In lieu of presenting my views on this text, I'll simply quote some of the more spectacular passages written by the Situationists Raoul Vaneigem and Guy Debord:
(Vaneigem:)
"Almost everyone has always been excluded from life and forced to devote the whole of their energy to survival."
"To talk of life today is like talking of rope in the house of a hanged man."
"those who don't sell themselves lose their right to survive and those who do sell themselves lose their right to live."
"What do we demand i...more

This wasn't written by Guy Debord, though it does have one selection by him.
In general, though good, I find it difficult to deal with the tremendous egos of these writers. If they were a bit less "I'm so fucking awesome and smarter than you" it would have been much, much better. Ah, situationists...it's a love/hate thing.
