A dynastic, dark melodrama. Yikes. With a sis like Trish, who needs family?
Written in 1988, it's dated (Cash is a chauvinist, fought in Vietnam, smokes cigarettes. Language includes the racist N word and homophobic slurs -- but not by the lead couple). I may have enjoyed this more 25 years ago, but cannot recall reading it.
Some folks love this story, but ugh. I began to hate it. Too unpleasant. Depressing. I didn't laugh. Not even a smile. Just lots of unsavory characters doing lots of unsavory...more

January 19, 2013--"Rereading" on audio, narrated by Dick Hill.
Still 3.5*
Grade B-
My original impressions of the book didn't change much with this go-round. I loved Dick Hill's narration, which does add to the atmosphere of the book. He does an incredible Cajun accent and makes Cash come to life. But even Dick Hill can't make the characters more sympathetic. There is no one to latch onto or root for in this book. Schyler and Cash get some sympathy, but their refusal to treat each other with respec...more

Read and reviewed before the internet age but this book remains my favorite all-time romance. I'm wondering if there's an e-book version I can buy!
REVIEW OF AUDIO BOOK; MAY 1st 2013: 3.5 STARS
I have listened to two audiobooks but can say, unequivocally, that I prefer male narrators; at least for the contemporary ones. Slow Heat in Heaven was one of my favorite romances of all time, at least, when I am in the mood for something soap opera-ish. I loved Cash Boudreaux the first time I read this boo...more

The first half was pretty good. But by the end it was not to my taste.
The major life choices for two of the main characters were questionable, illogical, or not smart. Their reasons were: deathbed promises to others who died. Those promises were harmful or stupid and should not have been kept.
The heroine Schyler did several stupid things. Here’s one of them. Someone has been stealing from the company. Cash has someone go through the books to discover who it is. He then tells Schyler who it is an...more

Unabridged audiobook review written for Speaking of Audiobooks 6/17/10:
Narrated by Dick Hill
I really enjoyed this one but that statement carries this disclaimer – it’s best to read Slow Heat in Heaven (originally published in 1988) as general fiction rather than romance. In today’s romance community, the lead male character is unlikely to make the grade as a romance hero and the heroine’s actions may disqualify her as a romance lead as well. Although there is a sensuous love story within, I view...more

You know when they say it's so bad that it's good? This is that book.
The "hero" is an asshole. He's got a major freeway on his shoulder and for most of the book, is quite cruel. The "heroine" often acts stupid and immature, sees herself a martyr, and is overall a drama queen. Think Rhett and Scarlett in Gone With The Wind, less the epic scale and depth of its characters, particularly Tara, then pump it full of steroids to seem like it has scale and depth. This book is kinda like Gone with the Wind on crack of the 20th century and its based in Louisiana. Instead of Tara you have Belle Terre. Before the book starts you have older sister that seduced younger sister fiance and married him which caused younger sister Schyler to run away to London for 6 years.. She comes back because her father (adopted father - both daughters were adopted) had a heart attack. In coming back she finds out her home that she loves is in danger of foreclosure. That her fa...more
I usually pick up a book to leave in the truck or at work that I can read on break/lunch. I usually pick books that are fluffy and something I know I can put down/pick up at anytime and not have any angst about the characters doing something when I'm not looking. Yes, it's irrational but I still worry if I've left a character too long they'll do something and not tell me about it.

Jadi malu..sering reread yg ini. Tokoh hero Cash Bodereux (maaf kalo salah tulis nama) benar-benar hero dg karakter yg tak pernah dilupakan pembaca..disini bisa dibilang tokoh hero bukan pria sempurna.
In the sweltering heat of Heaven Louisiana, Schyler Crandall and Cash Boudreaux make things even warmer with the tempetous romance. This romance goes on while Schyler dodges barbs from her viscious sister, and unwanted advances for Tricia's(sister) husband. Belle Terre is at stake, the beautiful antebellum house that Schyler loves, so she grabs the reins of Crandall Logging while her father Cotton tries to survive a severe heart attack. Won't tell you more because I'll ruin it for you except to...more
This novel is about Schyler coming back from London after her father had a heart attack. Schyler comes back to her small town that she left when she thought everyone turned their back on her. Her father seemed to no longer love her and her ex-boyfriend married her sister. Along with the stress of her father's heart attack she has found out that her beloved home, Belle Terre, is in danger of foreclosure. Follow the journey of Cash and Schyler as the find/fight the attraction between them and save...more
I want to begin by saying that this book really ought to come with trigger warnings for domestic violence, male & female rape, and animal abuse.
Now that that's out of the way...
This book was apparently first published in 1988 (which surprised me because I'd only noted the mid-2000s audio publication date), but it feels even more dated than that. Just about every cliche from the late 70s/early 80s makes an appearance in this book, from the ball-busting career bitch epithet to (view spoiler)...more

I listened to the audiobook of this read by Dick Hill. He does an amazing job of setting each character apart with how he vocalizes them. I thought it was thrilling, but it could use a bit more on Jigger Flynn's character. The book kept saying he was strongly feared and no one would dare mess with him, but besides his attitude and few examples I didn't see a real reason for that fear...not anymore than people feared Cash.

After reading a few pages, I realized I'd already read this one years ago. That is not surprising because I read a lot of Sandra Brown many years ago and just don't remember all of them. Anyway, I was able to start skimming through some parts more quickly since I already knew what was happening.
I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either. The story itself was fast paced and gripping but it contained many elements I'm not fond of. One being that the hero, Cash, was a jerk. I understand his child...more

Okay.... where shall I begin? Yes the hero was somewhat of an ass. But he is not as horrible as some of the reviews make him out to be. He just has some resentment issues and it kind of makes him a little rough around the edges. But not so much that you can't learn to like him. If you can get past the assbagishness. This book was entertaining and I read through it pretty quickly. But with that being said the ending did not come as a big surprise. I figured out what was going on pretty quickly so...more
This book was a little slow starting out for me. It did get better and I would have rated it a little higher, but I didn't always care for the behavior of the hero, Cash, who was a womanizer and chases after everything in a skirt. I did like Schyler who came home to a father she wasn't sure was going to live. Schyler slowly started to realize just how much things changed in the 6 years since she left home. As she tries to help her family she discovers family and community secrets that will affec...more
The end is predictable but story is colorful and fast moving. Narrator Dick Hill's talent makes the story come alive & a hard-to-put-down listen.

i hated Cash from beginning to..near the end. and even on the second to last page, i still hated him even then. hate's a strong word, so maybe i just disliked him. to all these romance writers, are men gods or something? anyway, all of the characters were dislikable, actually, but a good part of that made them all so human and real.
i rather cared more about the romance between Gayla and Jimmy Don than the main characters', though the HEA was still a nice touch.

I definitely enjoyed this book. It was intriguing, had good characters and the pace was excellent. I feel the most touching moment was with Gala and Jimmy Don on pages 445 & 446.
It brought a tear to my eye( maybe two or three)
. That said, the only character I truly got involved with was Jigger ' man you love to
hate' (and he came to such a fitting end'!

I think I have read this book about 5 times. The first time, I wanted a quick read, something to distract me from school, and ended up sleeping late and waking early to finish it. The second time because I wanted to understand Cash. The third, fourth and fifth time was to understand Cash.
Cash Boudreaux is the main reason why I love this book. I think he's the kind of character that you either hate or love, his man-whoring can be frustrating, and his violence and arrogance can also make him sound...more

This is not an easy book to rate, because there were times I loved it and times I wanted to throw it in the wall (figuratively speaking since it's an audiobook!).
The heroine, Schyler, returns to her hometown Heaven, because her father had a heart attack. She belongs to one of the most prominent families in the area, because of her father's successful lumberjack business. Her sister and brother in law (to whom Schyler was once engaged) are now running the business, which doesn't seem to be going...more

I really wish this hero would have had a different sort of book. After being rejected/hurt every day of his life by the people who should have loved him the most, this guy deserved a heroine who loved him like crazy and that by the end of the book, he would know without a doubt that he was first in her heart. As it was, we got a sort of romantic suspense plot with tons of villains (and lots of villain sex!) Don’t get me wrong the book was good, very gritty and dark, with a crude, very tough hero...more
