DANICA SHARDAE IS an avian shapeshifter, and the golden hawk’s form in which she takes to the sky is as natural to her as the human one that graces her on land. The only thing more familiar to her is war: It has raged between her people and the serpiente for so long, no one can remember how the fighting began. As heir to the avian throne, she’ll do anything in her power to...more

Although Atwater-Rhodes has garnered much-deserved attention from critics and received several awards for her young adult stories, here on GR and on several other book-reviewing websites, her positive feedback has been moderate at best. I believe this is partially because of the age of most of her stories/series: most of them began before the Twilight era swept the world, and thus don't have the swooning heroines and brooding heroes that everyone has become accustomed to in more recent years. (T...more

Ever since I've arrived at GoodReads, I've wanted to write a review for this book. It deserves a review. But every time I tried, the proper words wouldn't come, and so I just stuck with a completely insufficient paragraph outlining my thoughts in a nutshell. But I'm going to try again, and this time, I'm going to get it right, damnit! So, here goes:

Hawksong is vastly unique and different from most of YA. Its set long in our past (and the past of the Den of Shadows world), and it focuses entirely...more

Easily one of the greatest books I've ever come across. Zane and Danica are the product of an imagination so complete and powerful, it will move you and never put you back. I've literally had an epiphany after reading this book, and my entire life is practically redefined. Alright, maybe I put it overly dramatically, but the importance of this book is certainly real and I suggest everyone pick it up. IMMEDIATELY.
I should like to analyse all the characters, if you don't mind:
Danica Shardae (what...more

What a great and quick book! This book was amazing! Some reasons I liked this book are the characters were great, the plot kept you always excited, and it was clean!

First the character in this book were phenominal! Zane the mysterious cobra keeps you on the edge of your seat for half of the book. Is he sincere? Does he love her? Is he planing something? Zane reminds me a lot of Peeta from the Hunger Games. At first he's all show for the cameras, trying to put on the charade that he's in love wi...more

Hawksong may look like a short book, but there is certainly nothing simple about it. I liked it best out of the series, but the others still captured my attention.

One hawk-shapeshifter, heiress to an avian race. One cobra-shapeshifter, prince of the serpents. One cool and aloof, the other sensual and sensitive. Both of them sick of the endless war between their people. Both willing to do anything to end it...even when it means becoming pair-bonded with each other.

Danica and Zane's emotional and...more

Amelia Atwater-Rhodes is only 21 and has already published seven books. Her first book IN THE FOREST OF THE NIGHT was written when she was only 13. Every one of her books is a treat. Though marketed as Young Adult, there is nothing childish about subject matter or the writing. The lyrical quality and maturity of her writing belies her age or lack of experience.

HAWKSONG is the start of a series about shapeshifters. Dancia is an avian shapeshifter, heir to the throne, whose people are at war with...more

I rarely read YA novels, but I had this series in mi TBR pile for a long time and I decided to give it a try. Nor do I ovely like a fist person narrative...but...
Oh, boy, was it good!
Really, I wouldn't classify this as YA... it has a "flavour" of a classical fantasy.
The language was almost lirical and the story very interesting: how could two races, which hate each other and are natural enemies, forge peace? Marrying the heirs, of course! It is not a marriage arranged by the parents but by the...more

This book is lovely. Its about shapeshifters, and about how they want peace. The Avians and the Serpente heirs want peace for their lands so they figure that the best way to do that is by marrying each other so the people can’t hurt the soon to be king and queens loved ones family. Many people from both sides don’t accept their decision so they try to ruin their marriage by trying to kill them. The Avian heir, Danica, is very reserved and the Avians naturally hide their feelings, while the Serpe...more

The style was a little difficult to read, and the subplot of people trying to start the war again was done way too shallowly (plus I figured it out way before they did)--it seemed to me, like if it was going to be a problem, it was going to be a big problem, and I thought Danica and Zane should learn to love each other through working towards the same purpose (of taking down the rebellions)--which I guess is what happened, but I would have done that part very differently. I like a good active su...more

The avains and serpiente have been at war for longer than anyone can remember. However, is peace at hand when Danica Shardae holds her people’s enemy in her arms and sings to him about peace as he dies? When Zane Cobriana hears about this, he moves forward with plans on how they can earn peace. But, when a neutral group mentions merging the two royal families, will they be able to set aside their differences for the peace they both desperately...more

Atwater-Rhodes is perhaps best known for her first novel, “In the Forests of the Night,” published at a precocious age fourteen. But “Hawksong” marks her venture into the shapeshifter realm, and an excellent one it is.

Danica Shardae is the heir to the avian shapeshifter kingdom, which has long been at war with the royal serpent family, which is about to be inherited by Zane Cobriana. The royal families have been decimated by the wars, and both kingdoms have grown tired of the battles. In a peace...more

The thing with this particular book is, that it is not exceptionally well written. It's built on clichés, and some of the plot twists are so stereotypical it hurts. And yet I've read it twice, and both times - I loved it.

The best thing in this book is the fact that despite the clichés, the author is able to make the plot work. It draws you in, and after a while you can't stop reading; I think it probably is the wonderful portrayal of emotions, especially the main character's, Danica's, and the...more

I believe the author wrote this book not for educational purposes, but to give an audience something excititng to read. Hawksong is the first book of the series, so I think she wrote the book to give readers a good book to read and to give them something to look forward to after finishing the book. If this book this book was appealing to someone, they will be tempted to pick the next book and read that one as well.

The theme of this book is similar to the theme of Romeo and Juliet. There are two...more

Danica, the heir to the avian kingdom as their Tuuli Thea (Queen), is at a crossroads. Her people’s welfare and safety are what she cares about most, but they’re impossible to guarantee as the avian people are engaged in a war with the serpiente that has gone on for so long, no one remembers how it started.

Soon after yet one more skirmish where royal blood is spilled, the serpiente rulers extend a token of peace to the avian court. They want to stop the fighting, as does Danica, who will become...more

I greatly enjoyed Amelia Atwater-Rhodes's books in high school, happily and enthusiastically reveling in the escapism fantasy offered, but found Hawksong to be the most moving of them. Forbidden love has always been a hot theme in literature and the arts, but what really gets the readership on the edges of their seat is when that forbidden love mingles with other tantalizing elements, like force, political/social implications, and danger. The necessity of Danica Shardae and Zane Cobriana "pair-b...more

The book I read was called Hawksong by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. This book is about two shape shifters Danica Shardae (she is an avian shape shifter) who is the heir to the throne for her kind and Zane Cobriana (who is a serpiente shape shifter) who is the leader of his kind. War between her people and the Serpientes has been going on for years. As heir of the throne Danica will do anything to put an end to it. Even if it means being with Zane, who himself will be willing to accept Danica. Both try...more

This book is ridiculously short. Or it might just be the fact that I've been reading epic fantasies lately. Yet this book accomplished in 109 pages what some epic fantasies fail to do in 3 books and 2400 pages. It was truly enjoyable, and interesting. I couldn't put it down after I started. The very concept is fascinating, even though my detail hungry brain wants more. More world-building, more race describing, more religions, more politics. Again, I blame epic fantasies; these things are found...more

It's interesting when you switch genres of literature, styles of writing, time periods... it feels like you are changing realities - like you are being subjected to the same culture shock as if you Bill and Ted stepping into the phone booth in sunny so-cal only to step out onto a stormy battlefield in France during one of Napoleon's campaigns.

Sometimes that switch is not easy - sometimes I find myself struggling through the beginning of a book, like this one, for the simple reason that it is not...more

I have a soft spot for shapeshifters so I was happy when I finally decided to start reading this series. I loved Amelia's Den of Shadows series, and this series has a strong start as well. I really liked the idea of the prince and princess of two opposing sides mating because of the tension that stretches during the story. Of course it is expected that the pair put aside their differences and learn to work together to make everything work. I was a bit concerned though because halfway through thi...more

I've read an anthology featuring for stories by this author so I decided to try this book. For many years the avians and serpiente's have been at war with each other. They've been at it for so long they don't even remember why they're fighting. Danica the next heir to avian throne and Zane the next heir to the serpiente throne have lost many relatives because of the now meaningless battle. Zane's mother thinks it'd be best for Zane and Danica to wed and tie the two battling families together. Za...more

I admit now I'm going to butcher the spelling of these names, because I listened to the audiobook, and I'm too lazy to look them up.

Humans can change shape into animals, and the Avians (birds) and the Serpients (snakes) have been at war with each other forever. They go to a neutral party (cats, I think?) to get advice on how to end the war, and it is suggested that the heirs to the royal thrones marry each other. Danica (the future Avian queen) and Zane (the future Serpient king) are willing to...more

Nothing in this review is spoilery because the book's description screams it all at you. So.

The story for this book is a compound of two horrible cliches--first, make peace by marriage with someone you don't love, but end up loving by the end; and second, shapeshifters who seem to hate each other solely on the basis that they shapeshift into different things.

I loved the book anyway. It was beautifully written, full of wonderful characters, and the cultures were rich and deep. The plot climbed sm...more

Hawksong was a delightful quick read. I read in about 6 hours non-stop. It had just the right doses of fantasy and romance, heavy emphasis on the romance. However, there were a couple of awkward...scenes in the book. You know what I mean if you've read it, there was just too much sleeping going on... not the sexual sense but the literal meaning of sleeping. It seems Danica (the protagonist) sleeps often in the book. Naturally, sleeping is common, but the author seems to explain resting scenes on...more

This is a compressed review of four of the five books in the Kiesha'ra series (I never could find Snakecharm), so just be warned.

The first book in this series was really good. I loved the ideas involved in this book. I loved that people could change into birds and snakes (I've always thought that would be a really cool superpower). I loved that, even though their people had been warring for centuries, the leaders of each nation were willing to leave everything they knew in order to bring peace t...more

There has always been war between the avians and the serpiente. Though both sides long for peace, neither can trust the other enough to try and achieve it. But war has gone on far too long, and Danica and Zane are determined to end it, no matter the costs to themselves. But can each learn to love their greatest enemy?

I love this book. It appealed to me from the first page -- beautifully written and conceived, full of emotion. I admire Danica, and found her a wonderful protagonist. Unlike many fe...more

Oh my goodness. Amelia Atwater-Rhodes is my new author crush.

Despite being a short book--I finished it in just a few hours--it is absolutely overflowing with awesome. The characters leapt off the page (with both feathers and scales), the mystery element was genuinely mysterious, the tenuous relationship between Danica and Zane made my stomach and heart do crazy things.

Its location and time period were very hard/impossible to place, especially with the strange mix of naming conventions. It seems...more

Hawksong was a little different than the average shapeshifter story. Danica Shardae is an avian shapeshifter, who is soon to take her mothers place as the Tuuli Thea. (kind of like their Queen) Her kind has been at war for hundreds of years with the serpeintes. No on really knows why they are fighting, but with so many loved ones lost they simply continue to avenge their dead. Zane Cobriana is the Diente of the serpeintes. (king of the snakes) He ha...more

This book started out with the presentation of a very fantastical world and characters. Not being a big fantasy fan, I almost gave up on it, but I'm happy I didn't. Though I was left with some unanswered questions along the way, it is a very touching coming-of-age/love story with some very interesting characters.

Though this story is an appropriate beginning of a saga, I kept wondering if I had missed the first book! There is a lot of terminology used throughout the book that is briefly, if ever...more

I grew up in Concord, Massachusetts, where I matriculated through the public Concord-Carlisle school district from kindergarten until my graduation in 2001. The best part of school, from fifth grade until the year I graduated, was definitely chorus. I love music, and I love to sing, and though I never had the courage or the talent to participate in any of the high school plays as a performer, I en...more

“I lifted my face to meet the kiss, wanting the comfort of his touch as much as I was willing to provide the comfort of mine. The contact was sweet and soft, yet at the same time desperate.

It was Zane who pulled away first. "Danica, I think..." He trailed off and kissed me again, this time briefly, just the barest touch of lips to lips. "I love you."

From a man who frequently uttered eloquent speeches, the tentative declaration was not the most flattering of compliments-especially when every movement he made and look he cast my way had shown the long truth before now.

But coming from the serpent who had once informed me that he did not love me and did not think he ever could, whose cool, polished words could cut to the bone and freeze the Earth's frozen molten blood-whose eyes right now were just a bid dazed, and whose expression was as open and startled as I had ever seen it-the words were more than enough.

"I know," I answered. Then, soft but certain, I answered, "I love you too."

His smile matched mine and said the same as mine: I know.”
