Several authors are contributing to the Once Upon a Time series; hence the varied tone and uneven quality. Spirited is by Nancy Holder, who specializes in teen dark fantasy (i.e., Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

Here's another Beauty and the Beast story for all you fans in one of the most unusual settings that I've read: in the middle of the French and Indian War. The "Beast" is a Mohican shaman and "Beauty" is the daughter of a British doctor. You certainly sympathize with the the protagonists. I LOVE THIS BOOK TO DEATH!!!!! it's like, one of my all time favorite fairy tale revisits!!!! it's great and I would totally recommend it!!! I love it to death (obviously) and encourage you to get a copy of it/borrow it from someone or a library....!

Not at all what I expected, but worth the time it took to read. And just so you know (because I didn't figure it out), it's a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Makes sense now, but I was too dull to catch it while reading it.
