“Biting in Plain Sight”
A vampire veterinarian, Dr Sophie Trudeau, from Embarrass, MN notices that another vampire is killing young women and decides to enlist the help of Queen Betsy to stop him. Meanwhile, local farmer Liam has been getting up the courage to confess his attraction to Sophie and insists on accompanying her.
I liked that the town basically knew Sophie was a vampire, but didn’t give her trouble about it because she’s a good vet. Liam was cute, if a little heavy-handed and alpha. Be...more

Since I’ve been reading the stories from this book in between other full-length reads, I should’ve been making notes on each story as I went along. That said, today I just read the Laurell K. Hamilton contribution, which was pretty short, only 30 pages, and previously, a couple of weeks ago, I read the Charlaine Harris and MaryJanice Davidson stories.

The Girl Who Was Infatuated With Death by Laurell K. Hamilton
Unlike her contributions in other anthologies, this was actually an original short sto...more

This book is about vampires and sex - it's definitely not an example of good short story structure.
The first story is an Anita Blake story, something I have never experienced before.Basically it started out with an interesting premise - a girl who is about to lose her leg who wants to become a vampire so as to save it. But then abandons this plot entirely so as to focus on the more important issue, that Anita Blake is involved with two incredibly hot guys but she hasn't had sex in, like, foreve...more

The MaryJanice Davidson book is great; it was fun to read a story about another character in the Betsy the Vampire Queen world. I really liked the Angela Knight story and went on to read the rest of the series. Laurell Hamilton's Anita Blake story is good, but I'd read it before so it was hard to judge. The Vickie Taylor story didn't do it for me. The Charlaine Harris story was intriguing and made me look forward to the rest of the Sookie Stackhouse series even more than I already was.

The anthology begins with with a dreadful Laurell K Hamilton, which I skimmed - worst thing about it was that there was the stunted seed of a fairly intense story withered within it.
There was a quiet little Charlaine Harris piece with Sookie that took the taste away.
A decent longish piece by MaryJanice Davidson, with a sideways look at her Undead and Unwed heroine.
Angela Knight (can that be her real name?) mushes Arthurian legend and vampire lore together, and comes up with a vampire Galahad,...more

"The Girl Who Was Infatuated with Death"
I wasn't impressed with this story. It's just a long conversation between two people. To do Hamilton justice I still decided to read the first book in her Anita Blake series after reading this story and I must say: Hamilton is not a writer for me.

"One Word Answer"
I liked this story. It's simple, but clever. I do wonder however if people not familiar with the Sookie Stackhouse series would understand anything about this story.

Although this was pretty good, I'm sure I would've like it better if I were familiar with the series these stories are part of.
The first story in Bite is part of the Anita Blake series and it was a 2.5 for me. I couldn't get over what the vampire ex was wearing. Really, a red satin shoulderless blouse, er, top, and black satin pants!!! Is that supposed to be attractive!?! Is this the eighties or are there some really strong drugs involved?
The next story was a Sookie Stackhouse and it was a 2, sh...more

The story by Hamilton is little more than a teaser. So if you are thinking about getting this book because of her, don't bother.

The Charlaine Harris story was nicer. Still only a measly 23 pages, but at least a proper one with a beginning, a plot and an ending.

I liked the MaryJanice Davidson story enough to order the first book of her Undead series. The main character of that series pops up briefly here. Sort of like chick lit for vampire fans.

I only read the first 10 pages of "Galahad". Vampire...more

"The Girl Who Was Infatuated with Death" - Laurell K Hamilton
This one was kind of dull. Lots of ooooh he wants me but I must resist only to eventually give in and have boring sex. I liked the PI aspect, the mystery part, but even that was solved without any help from our plucky protagonist.

"One Word Answer" - Charlaine Harris
Very entertaining, kept me rushing through until the end to find out how it would turn out. Her characters always feel very real.

I've not read any of the Anita Blake books so the Hamilton story was blah for me since I didn't know what was going on. The Sookie Stackhouse story (Harris), a series that I absolutely love, was a little dull as well. It just felt like a story to fill up the book and not anything that really advanced any plot or character development. The Davidson story was cute and fun but not really that great either. Then the final two stories in this collection: I didn't really like either one. The Knight st...more

I bought this book because it was recommended by Amazon. The only author I was familiar with was MaryJanice Davidson after collecting her Undead series, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and am still craving for more. I braced myself for some spoilers because I know I'm reading some works of other authors that are also part of their respective series. I enjoyed most of the short stories here, but some not so much. If you're a fan of vampire stories and such, this is a time-travels-fast type of read.

I was so disappointed by this book! I thought I was buying a book with different stories from different authors. Instead, I got a book where the first 2 stories are PARTS of the authors main series. I've read the Sookie Stackhouse books, and Charlaine Harris' story did not add much of anything to what I already knew. I haven't read any of Laurell K. Hamilton's books, so her story was just frustrating.

MaryJanice Davidon's story started out good. Then she went that horrible "I'm going to talk like...more

I picked up this book (more like downloaded the iBook) because, after reading user-reviews of the next book on my list of Sookie Stackhouse novels, the Charlaine Harris short story "One Word Answer" is the prequel that helps clarify some things in the series.
The story is just as I thought it would be. I like the character of Bubba so I was glad that he was in it. Since I'm familiar with the characters - also, this story takes places in between books 5 and 6 - so it wasn't a problem understanding...more

I recently finished reading the Bite anthology (****) with the following stories:

○ The Girl Who Was Infatuated With Death by Laurell K. Hamilton - an Anita Blake short story that takes place between Blue Moon and Obsidian Butterfly.
○ One Word Answer by Charlaine Harris - a Sookie Stackhouse short story that explains a bit more about her cousin Hadley's death.
○ Biting in Plain Sight by MaryJanice Davidson - a story that takes place in the world of Queen Betsy.
○ Galahad by Angela Knight - set...more

This is an anthology of 5 vampire-themed stories including new stories by genre leaders Laurell K. Hamilton (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series) and Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire series.) I liked the Harris and LKH stories. For Harris, it will help if you read this before you read her Sookie book "Definitely Dead" as that book continually refers to events in this short story about Sookie's discovery that her long missing cousin was a vampire and the Queen of Louisiana's gi...more

None of the five short stories really stood out to me. It wasn't an awful read, but I'm not likly to read it again. My favorite was the Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse story, _One Word Answer_ - mostly because of the charm inherent in the tone and characters of those novels. I initially bought the book because of that story and was disappointed in it, having just read all the Sookie novels... but I think I judged it harshly just because it wasn't as...more

Bite is a collection of 5 short stories, (1) The Girl Who Was infatuated With Death by Laurell K. Hamilton, (2) One Word Answer by Charlaine Harris, (3) Biting In Plain Sight by Mary Janice Davidson, (4) Galahad by Angela Knight and (5) Blood Lust by Vickie Taylor.

The first one is an Anita Blake short story which happened in between Blue Moon (read my review here) and Obsidian Butterfly. The story is about a girI who is suffering from bone cancer. Her mother found out that she had asked a vampi...more

This book was a disaster. It's poorly written, reminds me of fanfiction written by 13 year olds.
And some of the stories are disgusting. I have nothing against romancy novels, i do buy them, read them and enjoy them. But there was sex at almost every third page in some novels, and described in a very dirty, inmature way. It felt like i was reading some 14year olds fantasy about how she/he thinks sex is like. How do you feel if i say the word.. 'creamy tunnel', yes. This is a word mentioned in on...more

I get that the point of these books is to introduce new/low selling authors to people by getting a big name author to write something for a collection of short stories. But that doesn't mean that the best selling author should right write 5 pages of crap. Sorry, make that 29 pages of crap. That's right. Laurell K. Hamilton's story was 29 pages of boring. And the next best selling author, Charlaine Harris' story was 23 pages of even more boring. Was it a clever marketing ploy to make the unknown...more

I picked this up for the Sookie Stackhouse story, but I always feel compelled to read the whole book once I have an anthology in my hands. As it turned out, the Charlaine Harris story was the only story in this anthology without at least one sex scene. Most had two or three. Now, I'm not opposed to a bit of hot vampire action, but this was too much for me. Add to that the blatant editing errors in the last two stories ("...he wrapped lightly on the ceiling"? Really?!), and I'm thinking the two s...more

This is a perfectly acceptable romance with vampires anthology. But I don't really care for romance, so I was mostly bored with it. And these stories were romance first, plot as a vehicle for said romance and ensuing sex scenes. The various biting scenes were even pretty vanilla, in my opinion.

Essentially, a two of disinterest. I would ask myself why I picked it up, but I needed to read the Charlaine Harris story in it. Which was only an okay story in and of itself, probably would have enjoyed i...more

If you follow the Sookie Stackhouse series, there may come a time where you felt that Harris forgot to tell you some crucial information and feel completely in the dark as to how Sookie got there and why. If you were like me, you reread several pages and realized it was a bad editing job and not my spacing out as I read. Well, I found those missing pages. Its called her "short story", which has nothing to do with "Dark Seduction", the short-story anthology's theme, but is in fact a cheap attempt...more

I enjoyed most of the stories in this collection, but the Charlaine Harris story, One Word Answer, felt out of place in the midst of the other 4 stories with a strong romance edge to them.

Any Southern Vampire series fan will tell you that reading One Word Answer is extremely helpful to understanding some of the plot in regards to Sookie's cousin, but it did not feel like a true short story - I don't believe that this story can stand on its own, without knowing the background of the Southern Vam...more

I normally don't enjoy anthologies, but this one was very entertainig. It had a story from Anita Blake, Sookie Stackhouse and from Queen Betsy as well. This was a really great one.

The Girl Who Was Infatuated With Death by Laurell K. Hamilton
I am sure that at some point this short was included as a scene in one of the books or perhaps it was part of something else I read. It was very familar anyway. Since I have read all of Anita Blake there wasn't anything new in this for me.

One Word Answer by Charlaine Harris
Like the first story this was a "scene" and without the context of the books I don't know how appealing it would be. As with Hamiltons story, it felt very familiar b...more

Over all the compilation rates 3.6 stars, but I've rated each story independently below.

1st story - The Girl who was infatuated with death by Laurell K. Hamilton
I'll admit I picked this up because I was having Jean Claude withdrawals. This helped ease a bite of the pang.

2nd Story - One Word Answer by Charlaine Harris

I always enjoy Hamilton’s Anita Blake series, but I was a little disappointed that a lot of my favorite characters didn’t show up in this story. “Galahad” read more like science fiction than vampire fantasy, but it had its moments; especially when mention was made of Morgana Le Fey, Arthur, and Lancelot—fine vampire hunters all. “Blood Lust” was the most creative, as far as the whole synthetic blood angle goes, but I knew Sue Ellen and Garth’s true identity almost immediately. The Sookie Stackho...more

I picked Bite up because it contains a Sookie Stackhouse short story. The tale, "One Word Answer" comes between books 5 and 6 of Charlaine Harris's series of Sookie books.
I enjoyed One Word Answer, but I really think that was only because I know the characters and the story. It did not seem to have the "meat" that a good short story requires.
The Anita Blake story felt much the same to me - a story that was written only for readers of the series.
The other 3 stories were all a bit more "complete"...more

I liked the stories from Laurell K. Hamilton (I now plan to read her Anita Blake series), Charlaine Harris (finally filled in that missing piece about Hadley's death) and Angela Knight (I want to read more about the Mageverse!). The others were entertaining, but didn't grab me. Although, I would consider reading a full novel about Vickie Taylor's vampire world as it had some unique twists, but it doesn't appear that she's written any.

Biting in Plain Sight was especially hard to finish. I didn't...more

This book is an anthology of short vampire stories.

11/10/09 read: "One Word Answer" by Charlaine Harris. If I wasn't already into the Sookie Stackhouse series this short story would be completely lame. By itself it wasn't anything special, but it filled in some gaps between books 5 & 6 of The Sookie Stackhouse Series that was very useful background information. Don't leave this out of the series as you read it. It is actually listed as Sookie Stackhouse 5.1. It suggests ties between Sookie...more
