A merry day at the market is made all the more interesting by a hungry cow. The Bensons get a late start on market day and have to rush. They pick the apples they are going to sell and then rush out of the farm gate, not closing it behind them. In their hurry, they have also forgotten to feed the cow, who sees the open gate and follows along behind. When they all reach the market, the cow causes all sorts of trouble before finding her family and finally getting fed. Apples, of course.

While rushing to get to the open market, the Bensons forget to feed their cow and forget to close the gate. The rhyming sentences are short but, the story is too long - perhaps a bit tedious.
If this was a real farm it would have gone bankrupt years ago. I demand of my books one simple thing--that it have some semblance of reality in it. The only thing I can find in this book is that the sun rises. Maybe my ranting isn't all deserved--after all, I am fed up to here with farm books that just portray a happy, casual, carefree lifestyle. Picking a truckload of apples the morning of the market? Ha! Oversleeping? Wouldn't happen. Forgetting to feed the animals and closing the gate? NEVER....more
The Benson family forgets to close the farm’s gate when the family leaves to sell its produce at the farmer’s market. The family cow gets out and ends up causing chaos at the farmer’s market, but the family works together the clean up the mess, and ends up having a successful market day.
This book is written in rhyme, and has a very distinct rhythm. The illustrations are well-done and colorful. Market Day is entertaining and provides the reader with a fun representation of country life.
