I liked the book. I really did. Jim Cymbala does a great job of reminding you of so many truths that you need to realize God's promises and purpose in your life. And his use of Joshua, Judges and Ruth to demonstrate these truths are But there were two things that just kept me from giving it a higher rating. One, I would have liked for him to go deeper on some of the topics. I felt like there was more, much more, in some cases that could have been said. Second, he never says "how"...more
This is a book of good evangelical sermons (based on Joshua, Judges, and Ruth) in both the good and the not so good sense of the term "evangelical." I had heard of Cymbala for years, but this is the first book of his that I have read. I am glad I read it, and it has its strong parts. For example, I thought the fifth chapter (sermon) was especially good. But I probably won't read any more of Cymbala's books.
This was my first read by Jim Cymbala & I was utterly amazed at his teaching. From the stories to personal examples to scriptural teaching, every little bit of this book was inspiring and challenging. I can't wait to read more of his work!
A great book! I especially loved Chapter 11, "More Than You'd Ever Dream" when he talks about how the book of Ruth - - one of the world's most heartwarming stories - - shines during one of the darkest times on earth (the Judges). In that chapter he goes on to say, "Ordinary people can make an extraordinary mark as they yield themselves to the purposes of God."
Jim Cymbala does a good job of making you realize that we really were "made for more".
