These are the English Roses. They aren't a flower shop, the aren't a box of chocolates, they aren't a pro soccer team , just a group of best friends that do EVERYTHING together. In the summer they go to the beach together. In the fall, they make leaf piles together. In the spring they pick flowers together. In the winter they go ice skating together. Whatever these five girls do they do it together. In this book, there is a new girl in town. And this girl is the prettiest, most beautiful girl th...more

The English Roses is one of my favorite picture books. It is written by Madonna and I know what some of you are thinking: Why did Madonna write a book? It's probably horrible! Well you are all wrong! The English Roses is set in England and it is about four friends: Charlotte, Amy, Nicole, and Grace who do EVERYTHING together. They have everything too: a great friendship, awesome clothes, nice houses. But, one day, when a new girl named Binah moves in, they get jealous. Binah is very beautiful an...more

First, let me just say I decided to try this book to see if it would be as dreadful as I'd feared. Also, I've always really liked the cover illustration! I had low-low-low expectations of Madonna's story and I admit they were not completely fulfilled--the story was okay. I have read worse in children's lit, believe me ("Goldilicious" comes to mind!) The concept is actually cute, but overall it's a bit too in-your-face and didactic for my taste, and there really is no "style" to speak of. Basical...more

The English Roses by Madonna will not be what you think it will be.
Beautifully illustrated by Jeffrey Fulvimari, it has a strong moral message.

Being and 'English rose' is not just about being beautiful on the outside, it is also about being beautiful on the inside.

With the help of a fairy godmother, Binah shows Nicole, Amy, Charlotte and Grace that you should appreciate what you have. Binah reminds them of Cinderella because her life consists of chores upon chores, in addition to all this, she d...more

I took this book into my preschool class because I loved the illustrations. It's a longer book and I hadn't planned to read it to a group. I did have two little girls request it and we started reading it, but didn't finish. The next day I didn't have the book with me because I figured the girls wouldn't remember.. I was wrong. The four year old not only remembered we needed to finish, she also remembered all the characters and where we were in the story. It a perfect story to read to girls who a...more

Madonna wrote it, and Jeffrey Fulvimari illustrated it. Both text and pictures are extraordinary.
Four girls who love to dance are jealous of a beautiful new girl. The new girl has no friends.
In a common dream featuring a fairy godmother, the girls, invisible through fairy dust, see the new girl at home, scrubbing the floor, preparing dinner, doing the laundry, ironing, and taking out the trash.
The four girls have an epiphany, after which they befriend the newcomer and treat her with love an...more

A charming effort from the Queen of Pop, Madonna. The Engish Roses is a book about a group of english girls who become jealous of another girl simply because of her beauty. Little do they know that Bina, who in fact is very beautiful, comes from a lonely due to the death of her mother and the everyday struggles of her home life.
The book teaches young children the power of jealously and how it can deeply effect people and their surroundings. Every parent and child should experience this book. Mu...more

As far as children's-books-by-celebrities go, the good, the bad, and the ugly, The English Roses is merely bad. Which is rather high praise, all things considered. I expected the book to be downright ugly.

Instead, it's mostly harmless. The four "main characters," the group of girlfriends known as "the English Roses," are featureless and interchangeable. They have lots of fun dancing, talking about boys, and having sleepovers.

They are also united in their hatred of the prettiest girl in school (t...more

This book might be a little bit girlish, but it had a valuable lesson. But before I tell you about that, let me tell you this. I would never have picked this out if my teacher hadn't read it to us. The moral was that if someone seems to be stuck up, don't quickly judge them and assume that they aren't fun to play with. Talk to them first before you make a judgment, or you won't really know what you're talking about.

This book is a good book, but a little easy. Its how the English Roses all stared out.Once you read this book you'll get into the rest of the series. The English Roses have always thought Belinda was mean because she was so pretty. They never invited her to anything, but really Belinda was a very sweet girl in need of a friend. But one night... Read the book to find out what happens next!

This book attempts to teach children the lesson of things are not always greener on the other side. It is about three girls jealous of a beautiful girl who they believe is living a perfect life, but they find out unexpected by their fairy god mother that could not be farther from the truth. They learned that they should not judge someone until they really get to know someone.

A beautiful story about friendship. There are four little girls: Amy, Nicole, Grace and Charlotte. These little girls go to the same school and live in the same neighborhood. They have everything and they are happy with themselves until a new girl, comes to town and steal other people's attention by her beauty, her kindness and smart brain.
The four girl jealous over this new girl and vowed to ignore her until one night during their sleepover party, they have the same dream about this fairy godm...more

I am not sure how many stars I want to give this book. I did not find the writing all that wonderful, the story is not original however; the style in which it is written is interesting with all of the asides to the reader and the art work is not bad. Older students could look at this book for ideas on writing books with narrators who speak to their audience.

This is a sweet story written by Madonna. I wish I had daughters to share it with. (My 3 boys would probably think it's a tad girly). I borrowed this from the local library. There is a great lesson about not judging others before getting to know them in this book. Very adorable illustrations to go along with the story.

After reading a borish review on this board by someone who admitted to not reading the book I decided the check it out from my local library and read it for myself. OK, so Maddona's pop music is far superior to her writing but I enjoyed the book nevertheless.

While the writing may not be first rate the illustrations are charming and story is good. It deals with issues of social cliques and jealousy. Even some adults still have problems understanding that just because someone is pretty does not m...more

Probably the worst children's book I have ever read. I'd have to read it again to comment on its themes and messages (which I remember being negative), but I can say that the pictures are ugly, there are too many words on each page, and it's just poorly written. Just because you're Madonna...

I liked it when I was younger, its very badly written, story is predictable but the illustrations are amazing. Its definitely not the worst- still it has some valuable message. To dont be jealous, to dont judge a book by its cover... Not bad but well, what to expect from Madonna?

What a great debut book for Madonna.

This story is about four girls who are best friends; they do everything together, including ignoring another girl in their class. They knew nothing of this other girl except that they were extremely jealous of her. One night at a sleep over, they all had the same dream: they learned all about this other girl and thought that they should get to know her. They did and she soon became a part of the English Roses.

The moral of the story is that people should not c...more

This was one of my favorite books. I read it some many times I know alot of it word for word. In the 4th grade I know so much she let me read it to the class. I was so happy. There is a second book but this one tops it all. I'm very inpressed with Madonna. You go girl!

I bought this for my neice on her birthday. I read through it and it's really cute! It talks about not judging people based upon how they look and how popularity is built on false assumptions and can change at the drop of a hat. It's a good message for young girls.

Secara ga sengaja lihat buku ini di BBM istora tadi siang. Dan penasaran pengin tahu seperti apa, ya Madonna kalo bikin buku?

Cocok juga buat orang dewasa :-)

This book is very interesting, sort of reminds me of the movie "Mean Girls". This book shows the differences and jealousy. This book can be used to talk about classroom building, bullying, and other things that are not so nice and make others feel like an outkast.

This book is so good!!!! It is also a life lesson to be kind to others. I remember staying up late and reading this book before bet time. My dad would read Harry Potter to me and my sis than I would pick a book to read that was like 5 pages but it was worth it!!!!!!

I received this book as a child from someone very dear to me. I find the book to be a great read! Years later and after reading it about twenty times I am still interested in the story and believe there are great things to be learned from it.

I just read this book with my eight year old daughter and although I was a bit skeptical of it because I bought it at the dollar store I must say this was a great childrens book. My daughter really enjoyed this book and it had a great lesson.

One of my favorite childrens books. Has a great lesson to teach especially girls! Very heartening story about jealousy. Despite what people think about Madonna I give this story a great review being I have a daughter of my own. Give it a try!

I don't add all the books I read with my girls, but this one deserves special mention. I didn't even realize it was THE Madonna until part way through the book; it is autobiographical with an important message, especially for young girls.

This book is about a group of three girls who are best friends. A beautiful girl, named Binah, comes into the neighborhood and the three girls become jealous. They do not want to invite her into their friend group because they think she has too much attention as it is. A fairy godmother visits them in their sleep, and she shows them what Binah's life is really like--she is a hand worker and is often lonely. T...more
