Kitabın konusu süper, olay akışı süper, karakterler orijinal. Böyle olunca haliyle bir solukta bitirdim. Gel gör ki kitaba beş vermeyi düşünürken sırf kitabın sonu beni sinir ettiği için değerlendirmemi üç yaptım. O nasıl bir sondur! Kitapla yazarın suratını tokatlama isteği oluşturdu bende resmen! Beni zirveye çıkarıp oradan aşağı attı. Duygularımla oynadı. Tamam ilginç. Tamam, tahmin edilmedik. Tamam, ters köşe yaptın da böyle b*ktan bir ters köşede olmaz ama! Hiç yakıştıramadım.

The setting is a Chicago very much like the current city but in a universe where human cloning is as common as in vitro is in our world. Cloning, however, is highly controversial and regulated. Dr. Davis Moore, the happily married father of a teenage daughter, is a fertility specialist expert in cloning who becomes the target of a religious fanatic. Although he survives the attack, his happy life is destroyed when his beloved daughter is killed at her after-school job. It seems as if Anna Kat wa...more
I read this with friends for our book group. It's a thriller set in the near future, when human cloning has become legal. A geneticist's daughter is killed, and rather than clone his own daughter, he clones the killer using DNA from the crime scene. He becomes obsessed with his daughter's murder and with the idea of being able to look into the killer's eyes. I don't usually read stories in this genre, but I found Cast of Shadows to be pretty engaging, although somewhat weak in the storytelling,...more
In the near future Dr. Davis Moore is a cloning specialist for couples who are unable to conceive a child for whatever reason. When his 17-year-old daughter is found raped and strangled, he spirals down into a dark depression. When he picks up his daughter's belongings from the police there is a vial of sperm left in the bag...which came from the killer. Dr. Davis breaks the law that requires DNA samples to be taken only from dead humans. He exchanges the donor DNA with the killer's DNA and uses...more
this is a book that i never would have chosen for myself - i read it for work-related purposes - but i actually really enjoyed the change of pace. it reminded me that i can appreciate a thriller once in a while since i mostly only read memoir and/or pop-fiction. i thought this book was really smart and well-written, and there are about 25 different twists, some predictable but some not, that make it interesting. you can't help but picture it as a movie when you read it, which i enjoyed.

Just how far would you go to find a killer, especially if the victim was your daughter? Guilfoile has created a fantastic novel that makes the reader think about that question, and many more. Filled with ethical, moral and legal questions, CAST OF SHADOWS captures you immediately and brings you into a multifaceted tale of justice. I read this novel when it first came out, and recently re-read it. It still rewards. The book is filled with characters, loaded with them really. Guilfoile opens up ma...more
A thriller/mystery with an intriguing concept, many twists, turns and turnabouts and some head-scratching moments. Well written and interesting to read - some far-fetched stuff, but so well described that the tendency is to accept and go with the flow. I have questions about some of the premises upon which a large portion of the story is based ie: why would Martha choose cloning a child (in order to avoid passing on her known genetic weakness) over the more "conventional" and less controversial...more
This book was amazing and had such a shock factor at the end for me that I gasped and cried!!! This is not the type of book I usually read. I read a review of it somewhere that intrigued me so I bought it.
The book is set in the future where cloning of humans is common, although not considered a good thing by many. It also has a futuristic video game where people play with avatars of themselves that are so real, the line between the game and reality crosses over.

This book is centered around one of the strangest concepts I have ever encountered, which is saying something considering the number of Sci-fi books I have enjoyed recently. It's a suspense thriller with multiple expeditions into what could almost be called science fiction but isn't quite, considering the very likely possibility that the events posed as fiction by Guilfoile could be very real concerns in the not too distant future. Cloning is a fairly common occurrence in the story and one physi...more
Dr. Davis Moore is a prominent figure in a controversial field. He is a fertility doctor who uses cutting-edge genetic cloning to give children to those who cannot have their own. Despite what others may think and the threats levied against his life by anti-cloning activists, he knows in his heart of hearts that what he does is a good thing. However, his priorities change when his teenage daughter is raped and murdered. Now, instead of introducing new life to the world, he becomes fixated on the...more
The story started out strong. A young woman is brutally raped and murdered, the police have no physical description of her assailant, and the DNA evidence offers no leads. Her father, as it happens, is a geneticist, specializing in human cloning as an infertility treatment (as commonplace in this world as in vitro is in ours, though much more controversial). He hatches a scheme to clone the killer from the DNA evidence, so he at least will be able to see what the killer looked like.

I read this awhile back and forgot and picked it up to read again. Obviously, the topic interests me. It's the delivery that wasn't so great. The idea of cloning a daughter's killer in order to see what he looks like when the clone grows up is a good idea, and the twist later is interesting, but it felt too overdone with the avatars and gaming world, etc., like the author was trying to fit in every sci-fi tech topic he could. I just didn't like his style. If I could, I'd give it 2 1/2 stars.
Had the pleasure of finishing this Chicago-set book while actually in Chicago. I basically never read thrillers, so I can't comment on how this works in that genre, but I liked how this cut across the thriller, near-future science fiction, and even ripped-from-the-headlines genres to create something that pokes at the questions of free will and whether we have a purpose in life. I especially liked the way the video game world worked in the narrative, and the way that the cast of characters expan...more
A pretty smart thriller. It aspires to use the notion of cloning to examing issues of identity and what it means to be human with some success but it really succeeds in presenting a story with a lot of unpredictable twists and turns. It made me stay on the treadmill longer in order to finish it which makes it a winner in my book.

I thought this a really great book. Lots of twists and turns, but nothing that seems cheaply plotted. About choices and their consequences--consequences for the choice maker and all of those around him/her. This is one of those stories that pops into my head years after having read it.

This was a book sale purchase by an unknown author. And the outcome was totally unexpected. I really enjoyed the twists and turns and the moral challenges the book presented. It is a genre that I don’t usually venture into but I was blown away, and left thinking about the book long after I had finished reading it.
Interesting book -- shows both sides of the debate on cloning.... Way too many coincidences, though... I know that is part of the plot, but got to be distracting. Enjoyable, but not fantastic.
Wow, this is not the type of book I would have normally chosen but I read of the author in Things I Learned About My Dad In Therapy and thought I'd give it a try.
Very impressive for a first novel. I hope he writes more.
There are some great and unexpected twists.
A real page turner and one I have no problem recommending it.
