I'm of two minds with this book. One part of me wants to shudder and 1-star it. The other wants to give it 4, on account of its heroine, Kristen.

to those heady days of romance, before all of the political correctness, when men were still men, and all of that. Which is not to say the heroine isn't kick-ass, because she is (as much as any urban fantasy heroine of these recent reads, that's for sure). I was on the Smart Bitches, Trashy Books website a few days ago reading the Johanna Lindsay discussion. Many waxed sweetly about this book Hearts Aflame--how it was both rape-y and feminist all at the same time. It's hard to think of a smutty romances as *that* paradoxical but the 80s were the golden age of bodice rippers when tempestuous and fiery women could only be subdued by alpha males with giant members and big muscles. I don't seem to enjoy a lot of the books that were written in the 80's and very early 90's. There's too much violence and raping and abuse in some of them. It seems like a crap shoot any time I pick one up. This book was one that I read years ago in the early days of my romance reading. (I started when I was about 12) I had so much fun reading it that I have kept it all these years and have reread it multiple times. I get a kick out of it each time I read it.

Like many Highlander romances, I found the male lead in this Viking-era novel to be too domineering for my taste. As an avid romance reader, I liked to be wooed by the budding relationship between characters. In this book, the male character was so heavy-handed that I wanted the heroine to resist him. His behaviour was so despicable that I wanted her to be outraged; and yet she kept giving in to him as if her body had a will of its own. The book is somewhat dated so there are scenes of slightly, almost forced seduction, but that I'll forgive since this was written and released some 20 years ago, and by the standards of that time, this is actually fairly tame; for instance, when the heroine is "mastered" by the hero, she has actually intentionally manipulated things so that, of course, would be the outcome. I remember sneaking this book off my mom's shelf when I was fourteen and reading it. Probably not the best reading material for a young teenager, but nevertheless I fell head over heels in love with Kristen and Royce and have read Hearts Aflame a dozen times over since then. I was very pleasantly surprised with this book. I thought it'd be another quick, no brainer romance read... but this book was so dang interesting! And the heroine was unlike any other I've ever read before. She pursued him and took charge in a lot of the scenes... which was very different. I've read this story multiple times, as it's a good one: well-written with likable characters. My one problem with the story, though, is that the steamy scenes, while steamy, make me cringe. Truly consensual forced sex is all well and good, but only within a fantasy role-playing scenario, and this story did not contain any such scenarios. I'm really puzzled about this book. Normally, I love a good love/hate relationship. While it is not entirely this genre, it mostly fits and that was enough for me. Not to mention, I love Vikings. (I blame Eric. All his fault being so evil and yummy.)
I enjoyed this book for the time spent, but I won't read it again. I like the fact that the heroine decides she wants the hero way before he even has a clue. I also like the fact that she's a clear, contrasted opposite to the other non-Viking females...more

This was my first by Johanna Lindsey but I have since read many more, becoming one of her fans. When I read it, I did not realize HEARTS AFLAME was 2nd in a trilogy of a Viking family (FIRES OF WINTER, HEARTS AFLAME and SURRENDER MY LOVE), but it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone. I'm almost positive that I read this when I was a teenager (which incidently is when this book came out) and loved it. Johanna Lindsey's books were amongst first romances I ever read, and I consider her to be the author responsible for my love of romance novels today. But, I can't remember anything about this story. LOL! So, I think I'll have to give it another shot and see if I still love it as much as I did then.
