1863 Mexico/American Southwest. 14 year old Midnight escapes from the cotton plantation where he as worked as a slave. He finds work as a cowboy. He enjoys his freedom but misses his parents and siblings who he was forced to leave behind. Most of the story is about his adventures on his first cattle drive.

I thought this was a great story. I would recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a good adventure. There is a sequel "The Longest Ride".
