I have read this book several times (actually I read the Indonesian translation), one of my favorite books.
It gives me good introduction to world history and give more awareness/consciousness of what was/is happen in our mother earth since the earth is formed/shaped billion years ago till the British Industrial Revolution, World War, and what might be happening in the future. After I read this, I can understand any other book or information of world history/facts faster than before. Toynbee is t

Having immensely enjoyed two other books that cover the entire history of humanity-- Ishmael and Guns, Germs, and Steel-- I was eager to examine what renowned historian Arnold Toynbee had produced. It started out brilliantly, focusing on the history of the biosphere and human habitation. The first sixty pages are some of the best historical writing I have ever encountered.

The bulk of the book, though, is rather disappointing. It reads much like an encyclopedia, giving very dry, overly-broad acco

Here is the old historian coming back to his narrative of humanity. Many were disappointed by this book and it has often been criticised as if was too old etc. What I found especially endearing here is that Toynbee is bringing sentimentality and emotions to his story. One can even sense his disregard for humanity. It should ideally be read together with his views expressed in Civilization on Trial. This is a book that I will leave with a note 'Must reading' for my boys....

I'm a big fan of Toynbee, but was a disappointment. I suppose I should not have expected much, as he wrote it at the very end of his life, when most of his powers had likely deserted him. My caveat is that I did not read very much of it, but it seemed to be one thing after another, with little of Toynbee's ability to give grand narrative and context.

Arnold Toynbee's final masterpiece that displayed his deft and eloquent ability to bring history alive and in contexts that the average non-history buff can relate to.

In this book he attempts to divest the view of world history as centered on the western hemisphere and instead focuses on a simultaneous action by "cradles of civilization", this style later became popular and more evident with modern day historians such as James Burke.

Another first was his emphasis on "stewardship of the biosphere
