Malorie Blackman tells the story of a young boy, Sam who finds it hard to admit his friendship with the new boy Davey in his class. He pretends that he doesn’t like him, picks on him and stands back while others do the same.
Davey thinks differently to anyone Sam knows, he see’s things quite unconventionally.
One day a serious incident at school causes Sam to realise just how important Davey really is to him as a friend. Davey however, feels he only has one choice and that is to conform to what...more

Cloud Busting is narrated by the 'bully' called Sam, however this is not apparent until about half way through the story. Sam and Dave (the boy Sam bullies) develop a 'secret' friendship, when Dave saves Sam from being run over by a car. Cloud Busting is told completely through five different types of poetry. As well as being well written, the illustrations are visuals that also tell the story.
The story starts and finish with Sam writing a poem for his teacher in a lesson at school.

Cloud Busting is about a boy called Sam who was bullying a boy in his class. The book explores why Sam started to bully his classmate and how this affected the boy who was being bullied. Through his actions he in turn became bullied and understood how Tim felt.
What I enjoy about this book is that all of it tells the story through chapters of poetry. It uses different types of poetic methods and techniques. Malorie Blackman was able to incorporate the characters development of poetry into the st...more

I started writing poems for my own amusement long before I began to write stories. Nursery rhymes, playground songs and pop songs were as much a part of my life as breathing. I was reading at an early age, but this was a deliberate, though fun activity. Reading was something I had to be taught, something I had to sit down and do. Poetry was different. Poetry for me was in the way the branches of the trees danced in the wind, in the way snow fell to the ground bringing silence with...more

This is an original idea- it's the story of two school boy's friendships and how it changes both of their lives for ever. The original thing about it is that is entirely written in verse. Each chapter is another poem and they tell the story. Most are free verse but all of the poetic forms you study at school are here, from haikus to limericks.

It works brilliantly and creates a powerful story which really makes you feel that you can empathise with the main character. Brilliant idea and pulled of...more

Cloud Busting is a captivating story about one of the harshest aspects of school life for many children – the painful, destructive act of bullying. This story features Sam, the bully and Davey, his victim as the main characters. As is the case in most such situations, Sam is not short of supporters and Davey’s suffering is the sort that would tug at many hearts. This is very much a tale of emotions: pain, fear, confidence at both extremes of the spectrum, the blush of a schoolboy crush and - aft...more

This novel in verse by a British author is about Sam, a boy who feels guilty about doing something mean to a friend, and how that act and that friend change him. His teacher assigns the class to write a poem about something in their lives, so Sam writes a series of poems, some in blank verse, haikus, limericks, and free verse, and one as a concrete poem. I liked how the story Sam was telling was combined with learning how to write poetry. There are some great images here, mostly spoken by the ch...more

This is the first book I read by Malorie Blackman! I love the way the writing is set in a poem sort of way, and the rhyming too. After that I started to read more of her books and I loved them. This book is a must reader. You are bound to love it if you are about to read this book.

A very quick read but such a lovely idea, all the chapters told in various forms of poem. Nice story and ending.
Andrew (Ace)
A moving story, but I found it hard to get much from it, as it was so short that it seemed to be over very quickly.
Hayley
Poems good, nice range. Bit of a boring story.
Libby Clare

I think that this book is really a nice short read. It is set as a poem which impresses me.

It is about a new boy - Davey. He has holes in his jumper and strange ideas in his head. Sam can't stand him; he thinks Davey's a first-class, grade A, top-of-the-dung-heap maron. But when the two boys are thrown together, Sam finds that Davey's eccentric way of looking at the world makes life a lot more exciting, until something terrible happens...

This book is quite good. It is a perfect read for somebody who is just bored and would want something nice to read. This story is in the form of poems which makes it a little different, but very well wrote. It also has the element of sadness and happiness mixed together which gives the book a high star rating. Just average to me!

Don't be a bully.

Read this book and cry instead. Then get bullied. But don't give a shit because bullies are pants.

This book of poems was not quite what I expected. It tells a complete story with an unusual ending.
